Nonsurgical treatment of an adult with a skeletal Class III malocclusion combined with a functional anterior shift, severely overclosed vertical dimension, and a reverse smile.

This case report illustrates the successful nonsurgical treatment of an adult with a skeletal Class III malocclusion exacerbated by a functional anterior shift that resulted in a severe overclosure of the mandible and a reverse smile line. To maximize the soft tissue and smile esthetics while idealizing the occlusion, active clockwise rotation of the mandible was induced along with mandibular molar uprighting and sequential leveling. In the maxilla, full arch distalization was achieved after second molar extraction. The treatment provided a satisfying esthetic and functional outcome and has re

Navigating challenges in prosthodontic rehabilitation after long-term delay following fibula free flap reconstruction with a unique overlay removable prosthesis and large vertical dimension increase.

This case report highlights the experience of one maxillofacial surgical patient who delayed prosthodontic treatment for 7 years as they saved to self-fund access to a subsidized prosthodontic service. Without the benefit of a restored opposing dentition for a prolonged period of time, maxillary occlusal plane disruption occurred as a downstream clinical consequence. To manage the complexities arising from delayed presentation, the prosthodontic team developed a highly tailored treatment plan to meet the patient's unique clinical needs, which included fabrication of customized healing abutment

Relationship between Bilateral Landmarks of Facial Asymmetry in Skeletal Class II and Class III in Vertical Dimension: 3D Facial Scan and Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

Significant facial asymmetry can lead to both functional and aesthetic issues. Often, such asymmetry originates from irregularities in the jaw structure. It is critical to recognize that asymmetries can be concealed by soft tissue, which may be overlooked. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between bilateral landmarks in the vertical dimension of facial asymmetry among individuals with skeletal Class II and Class III malocclusions. Fifty-two adult patients with a mean age of 24.4 ± 3.79 years with facial asymmetry who underwent orthodontic and orthognathic surgery were s

Increasing the Vertical Dimension of Occlusion: A Multicenter Retrospective Clinical Comparative Study on 100 Patients with Fixed Tooth-Supported, Mixed, and Implant-Supported Full-Arch Rehabilitations.

This multicenter retrospective clinical study was aimed at comparing the effects of an increase in vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) in patients with fixed rehabilitations. Expert clinicians retrospectively evaluated 100 patients treated with an increase of the VDO and fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) supported by teeth, implants, or both. The patients were divided into three study groups according to the type of support of restorations in posterior areas, as follows: partially edentulous patients with posterior teeth-supported rehabilitations and no implants in posterior segments (group A),

Influence on the temporomandibular joint induced by mandibular malpositioning caused by vertical dimension elevation and occlusal loss in adult rats: An imaging, histological and immunohistochemical study.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular malpositioning may result in an abnormal concentration of stresses within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in adult rats, which may further lead to a series of pathological changes, such as articular cartilage wear, subchondral bone sclerosis and osteophyte formation. However, the pathological and adaptive changes in condylar cartilage caused by different stress distributions are still controversial. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to observe the effect of sagittal changes in mandibular position on condylar cartilage by changing the occlusal vertical dimension (OV

Maxillary Sinus Dimensions in Skeletal Class I Chinese Population with Different Vertical Skeletal Patterns: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Study.

Due to the close relationship between the maxillary posterior teeth roots and the maxillary sinus floor, the maxillary sinus can significantly impact various dental treatments, including endodontic procedures and surgical apicectomy, periodontal flap surgery, surgical tooth extraction, dental implantation, and orthognathic surgeries. Specifically, in orthodontics, the location of the maxillary sinus floor may affect tooth movement and insertion of temporary anchorage devices (TADs). This study aims to evaluate the dimensions and location of the maxillary sinus in the Chinese orthodontic patien

[Dentofacial dysmorphoses : distant links with musculo-skeletal system and posture].

According to several theories, the oro-facial sphere would be interconnected with the rest of the body justifying the requests for care to improve a body zone at a distance. The aim of this literature review was to look for potential distant links of dysmorphoses of the three dimensions of space according to the etiopathogenic theories and the data of science. We carried out a keyword search leading to 58 references. In the transverse dimension, the transverse maxillary hypoplasia and dissymmetry of the molar class of the transverse dimension would not induce a change in the distribution of th
