Vestibular migraine (VM) and Menière's disease (MD) are common neurotological disorders causing episodic vertigo. Sometimes, VM is accompanied by cochlear symptoms suggestive for MD. Therefore, in those cases, the differential diagnosis between the two disorders can be difficult. Moreover, a comorbidity with migraine in MD patients is widely reported, up to the hypothesis of a possible MD-VM overlapping syndrome. In this brief case report, we consider the clinical history of a family presenting high incidence of subjects fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of VM and single case fulfilling crite

Migraine (MI) is the most common neurological disease, affecting with 20% of the world population. A subset of 25% of MI patients showcase concurrent vestibular symptoms, which may classify as vestibular migraine (VM). Meniere's disease (MD) is a complex inner ear disorder defined by episodes of vertigo associated with tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss with a significant autoimmune/autoinflammatory contribution, which symptoms overlap with VM. Blood samples from 18 patients with MI (5), VM (5) and MD (8) and 6 controls were collected and compared in a case-control study. Droplet-isolated

This review develops the hypothesis that co-morbid balance disorders and migraine can be understood as additive effects of processing afferent vestibular and pain information in pre-parabrachial and pre-thalamic pathways, that have consequences on cortical mechanisms influencing perception, interoception and affect. There are remarkable parallel neurochemical phenotypes for inner ear and trigeminal ganglion cells and these afferent channels appear to converge in shared central pathways for vestibular and nociceptive information processing. These pathways share expression of receptors targeted

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent and episodic vestibular symptoms not fulfilling criteria for known episodic vestibular syndromes are named as recurrent vestibulopathy (RV). We aimed to compare the vestibular test results of RV patients with vestibular migraine (VM) and Ménière's disease (MD).
METHODS: Twenty patients with MD, 20 patients with VM, 18 patients with RV, and 20 healthy volunteers (HC) were evaluated. Pure-tone hearing thresholds (PTHTs), video head impulse test (vHIT), functional head impulse test (fHIT), and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) were studied.

Background/Objectives: Vestibular migraine (VM) is one of the most prevalent causes of episodic vertigo, yet it remains underdiagnosed due to overlapping features with other vestibular disorders and the absence of definitive diagnostic tests. Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) assess otolith and vestibular nerve function and may help identify pathophysiological mechanisms in VM. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the usefulness of VEMP in understanding VM, synthesize existing findings, and explore its clinical implications. Method: A systematic search was performed in PubMed,

AIM: Menière's disease (MD) presents with episodic vertigo and auditory symptoms. Vestibular migraine (VM) typically contains migraine features associated with the vertigo attacks. Distinguishing MD from VM can be challenging due to overlap in symptomatology. To assist in the differentiation between the two, this study aimed to compare auditory and vestibular symptoms and functions in MD and VM, and to assess the diagnostic value of the video head impulse test (vHIT) and caloric test.
METHODS: A cohort study was performed at a tertiary dizziness clinic in the Netherlands in MD and VM patients

Overlaps can be seen between vestibular migraine (VM) Ménière's Disease (MD) and diagnosis is difficult if hearing is normal. We aimed to investigate the sacculo-collic pathway in VM patients, MD patients, and healthy controls to define the diagnostic role of cervical VEMP (cVEMP). VEMP testing in response to 500 Hz and 1000 Hz air-conducted tone burst (TB) stimulation was studied prospectively in 22 subjects with definite VM (according to Bárány nomenclature), 30 subjects with unilateral definite MD, and 18 volunteers matched healthy controls. In VM subjects, response rate, p13 and n23 latenc

OBJECTIVE: Auditory spatial information is decoded in various regions of the central auditory nervous system, beginning at the level of the superior olivary complex. The trigeminovascular system, known to be involved in the pathophysiology of vestibular migraine, innervates the superior olivary complex and several other regions of the auditory nervous system. Thus, processing of binaural cues and, therefore, auditory spatial abilities may be affected in individuals with vestibular migraine. This study aims to compare interaural level difference (ILD), interaural time difference (ITD), Virtual

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular migraine is a newly recognised and debilitating condition. This article aims to provide an overview of what is known of vestibular migraine, delineating its diagnostic criteria and presenting some initial management strategies to aid ENT professionals in delivering optimal care when patients first present to the otolaryngology clinic.
METHOD: Although traditionally underdiagnosed, there are now clearly defined diagnostic criteria to aid accurate diagnosis of vestibular migraine.
RESULTS: A detailed history and clinical examination are the cornerstone of the diagnostic p

Vestibular migraine (VM) is a usual trigger of episodic vertigo. Patients with VM often experience spinning, shaking, or unsteady sensations, which are usually also accompanied by photophobia, phonophobia, motor intolerance, and more. VM is often associated with a number of comorbidities. Recurrent episodes of VM can affect the patient's emotions, sleep, and cognitive functioning to varying degrees. Patients with VM may be accompanied by adverse moods such as anxiety, fear, and depression, which can gradually develop into anxiety disorders or depressive disorders. Sleep disorders are also a co

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to review current literature regarding the epidemiology of vestibular migraine (VM), patient presentation, pathogenesis, and treatment.
RECENT FINDINGS: VM is becoming an increasingly recognized condition in the United States, currently affecting 2.7% of people. Patients may experience vestibular symptoms, such as vertigo and imbalance, with or without other migrainous symptoms. Recent evidence has also shown that patients with VM are at higher risk for cochlear dysfunction, such as sudden deafness, sensorineural hearing loss, and tinnitus. The heritability

BACKGROUND: Vestibular migraine is a form of migraine where one of the main features is recurrent attacks of vertigo. These episodes are often associated with other features of migraine, including headache and sensitivity to light or sound. These unpredictable and severe attacks of vertigo can lead to a considerable reduction in quality of life. The condition is estimated to affect just under 1% of the population, although many people remain undiagnosed. A number of interventions have been used, or proposed to be used, as prophylaxis for this condition, to help reduce the frequency of the atta

Opsoclonus refers to saccadic oscillations without an intersaccadic interval occurring in multiple planes. Opsoclonus mostly indicates dysfunction of the brainstem or cerebellum. We report opsoclonus induced by horizontal head-shaking without other signs of brainstem or cerebellar dysfunction in two patients with vestibular migraine (VM). The development of opsoclonus after horizontal head-shaking indicates unstable or hyperactive neural circuits between the excitatory and inhibitory saccadic premotor burst neurons in these patients with VM.
