Vestibular neuronitis in a child with coronavirus disease 2019 infection and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: This article presents the case of an adolescent with asymptomatic coronavirus disease 2019 infection who had vestibular neuronitis symptoms. METHOD AND RESULTS: The new coronavirus disease 2019 demonstrates neurotropic properties, apart from airway symptoms. Early in the pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 infection had been associated with olfactory disturbances. Accumulative evidence supports that both the infection with coronavirus disease 2019 and the vaccination against the virus may induce a condition of vestibular hypofunction, known as vestibular neuronitis. Coronavirus dise

Herpes simplex virus type 1 in saliva of patients with vestibular neuronitis: a preliminary study.

OBJECTIVES: Vestibular neuronitis (VN) is an inflammatory disease of the vestibular nerve, presumably caused by reactivation of the herpes simplex virus type l (HSV-1). We hypothesized that HSV-1 might be detected in saliva of patients with VN due to migration of the reactivated virus from the vestibular ganglia to the parotid gland. METHODS: Twenty-one patients with VN and 15 healthy controls participated. HSV-1 DNA detection was performed using the real-time polymerase chain reaction method. Sera were collected and stored to be later analyzed for immunoglobulin (Ig) G and IgM antibody titer

Vestibular neuronitis in aged patients: results from an epidemiological survey by questionnaire in Japan.

An epidemiological survey of vestibular neuronitis in Japan was done using a questionnaire. Answer sheets were obtained from 619 patients with vestibular neuronitis. In order to evaluate data from aged patients, 74 cases were singled out. The following results were obtained: i) There was no sexual difference and no laterality of affected side; ii) There was no case of bilateral vestibular neuronitis; iii) Ten cases were reported as recurrent. Aged patients had a relatively high rate of recurrence; iv) About 10% of 74 cases had had an upper respiratory tract infection, and this rate was lower t

Diagnosis and Treatment of Vestibular Neuritis/Neuronitis or Peripheral Vestibulopathy (PVP)? Open Questions and Possible Answers.

: The acute vestibular syndrome is a clinically defined entity consisting of vertigo or dizziness that develops acutely over minutes to hours and is accompanied by nausea/vomiting, gait instability, head motion intolerance, and nystagmus, while persisting over a day or more. When it is caused by a peripheral vestibular lesion and is not associated with clinically manifest auditory deficits, it is mostly labeled vestibular neuritis/neuronitis/neuropathy or sometimes peripheral vestibulopathy. Here, we propose hypotheses and discuss current research advances on viral or vascular factors in the p

The "Vestibular Eye Sign"-"VES": a new radiological sign of vestibular neuronitis can help to determine the affected vestibule and support the diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Nystagmus is a valuable clinical finding. Although nystagmus is often described by the direction of its quick phases, it is the slow phase that reflects the underlying disorder. The aim of our study was to describe a new radiological diagnostic sign called "Vestibular Eye Sign"-VES. This sign is defined as an eye deviation that correlates with the slow phase of nystagmus (vestibule pathological side), which is seen in acute vestibular neuronitis and can be assessed on a CT head scan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1250 patients were diagnosed with vertigo in the Emergency Dep

[Effects of steroid therapy on long-term canal prognosis and activity in the daily life of vestibular neuronitis patients].

We studied 28 patients with vestibular neuronitis treated at our hospital between 1997 and 1999. To determine the effects of steroid therapy on long-term canal prognosis and daily activity, we examined caloric tests and gave questionnaires to 12 steroid-treated and 16 nonsteroid-treated patients 2 years after onset. We found that canal improvement was 50% in the nonsteroid-treated group and 75% in the steroid-treated one. In cases with severe canal paresis (CP > or = 60%), canal improvement was 33% in the nonsteroid-treated group and 67% in the steroid-treated one. Steroid therapy at the acute

Vestibular critical period, maturation of central vestibular neurons, and locomotor control.

Mutant mice are a good model to study to what extent the postnatal activity of sensory afferents is necessary for the maturation of central neurons. In particular, the question arises whether the signals carried by the first-order vestibular neurons, which encode information on the head movement of pups, are necessary for the maturation of second-order vestibular neurons. To address that question, juvenile and adult transgenic, vestibular-deficient mutants where a null mutation of the KCNE1 potassium-channel gene leads to degeneration of all hair cells of the inner ear just after birth were st

Loss of embryonic vestibular ganglion neurons in a chick model of congenital vestibular disorders.

People with syndromic, congenital vestibular disorders (CVDs) experience severe challenges to maintain posture and balance throughout life due to malformation of the inner ear into a sac-like structure with missing or truncated semicircular canals. How inner ear malformation affects the remaining vestibular neural circuitry is unknown, although decreased number of vestibular ganglion (VG) neurons is reported in CVD children. Our first step here was to determine whether VG neuron number is reduced before birth using our chick model for CVDs at embryonic day 13 (E13), a stage 2/3 of the way thro

Disrupted Vestibular Nuclei Neuron Development in a Chick Model for Congenital Vestibular Disorders.

Children with syndromic, congenital vestibular disorders (CVDs) form a sac-like inner ear with missing or truncated semicircular canals and experience delayed motor development with lifelong challenges to maintain posture and balance. How the abnormal inner ear affects downstream central vestibular neural circuitry has not been investigated. We hypothesize that inner ear pathology leads to hyperexcitability and dendritic changes in excitatory vestibular nuclei neurons, as reported for excitatory neurons in other neurodevelopmental disorders. To determine whether neurons in CVDs follow a simila

Whole-Mount Dissection of the Vestibular Complex and Quantification of Vestibular Ganglion Neurons in Mice.

The vestibular system is crucial for our sense of balance, for detecting head movements, and for regulating gaze and posture. There are five vestibular organs located inside the temporal bone, including two otolith organs (utricle and saccule), which detect linear movement, and three cristae (lateral/horizontal, anterior, and posterior), which detect rotational movement. Each organ contains a sensory epithelium with hair cells that detect head movements and supporting cells that provide structural support, release growth factors and cytokines, and phagocytose dying hair cells. The neurons that

shox2 is required for vestibular statoacoustic neuron development.

Homeobox genes act at the top of genetic hierarchies to regulate cell specification and differentiation during embryonic development. We identified the short stature homeobox domain 2 (shox2) transcription factor that is required for vestibular neuron development. shox2 transcripts are initially localized to the otic placode of the developing inner ear where neurosensory progenitors reside. To study shox2 function, we generated CRISPR-mediated mutant shox2 fish. Mutant embryos display behaviors associated with vestibular deficits and showed reduced number of anterior statoacoustic ganglion neu
