The distribution of serotonin-containing nerve cell bodies, fibers and terminals in the lizard Varanus exanthematicus was studied with the indirect immunofluorescence technique, using antibodies to serotonin. Most of the serotonin-containing cell bodies were found in the midline, in both of the raphe nuclei, i.e. the nuclei raphes superior and inferior. A considerable number of more laterally shifted serotonergic neurons was found particularly at three levels of the brain stem, viz. in the caudal mesencephalic tegmentum, at the isthmic level, and over a long distance in the medulla oblongata.

The alleviation of vestibular distress using drug therapy is a question of whether treatment with drugs is advisable at all or whether more emphasis should be directed towards active habituation therapy. Histamine and especially its derivative, betahistine, inhibit the massive impulses to the polysynaptic neurons of the lateral vestibular nucleus without having any sedative effect, as measured by saccadic eye movements. In the ENT Clinic of Turku University Hospital, betahistine has been used to treat 613 Meniere's patients at a dose of 8 mg three times daily. In about 80% of these patients, t

We have localized muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the rat brainstem by a light microscopic autoradiographic method. Initially, we examined the kinetics and specificity of the binding of radiolabeled quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) in slide-mounted, frozen tissue sections to determine that we were labeling the muscarinic cholinergic receptors as they had been described previously in biochemical pharmacological studies. Subsequently, using optimal binding parameters to obtain high specific to nonspecific ratios, we labeled tissue sections and generated autoradiograms by the apposition of e

The topographical organization of cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) and the tree shrew (Tupaia glis). Two patterns emerge; one which shows longitudinal zones of the entire vermis and a second which shows that induvidual lobules within the overall longitudinal pattern terminate in specific areas of the ipsilateral medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) and vestibular complix. The posterior lobe vermis consists of a narrow midline portion which projects bilaterally into the NM and a paramidline zone which projects only int

This study demonstrates that somatostatin (SRIF), an endogenous peptide in vestibular nuclei and cerebellum, can produce both a dose-dependent death of Purkinje cells in distinct sagittal regions of cerebellar cortex and vascular infarcts centered selectively in the inferior vestibular nucleus. Alert, adult male rats were given a 5 microliters intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) bolus of either SRIF alone (20 or 40 micrograms) or a combined dose of SRIF plus either arginine-vasopressin (AVP, 1 micrograms) or an AVP V1 antagonist, (1-(beta-mercapto-beta,beta-cyclopentamethylene propionic acid), 2-

The distribution of Purkinje cells projecting to the descending vestibular nucleus was studied in lobule IX (uvula) of the cat by the retrograde wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase method. In the transverse plane labeled Purkinje cells were seen diffusely within 1.0 mm from the midline and densely for 250-500 microns at around 1.0 mm lateral to the midline. Reconstruction of the distribution in the horizontal plane revealed that they were distributed in longitudinal areas extending in the apicobasal extent of lobule IX.

1. In the companion article, a variety of head movements were elicited by stimulation in, and adjacent to, the gigantocellular reticular nucleus (Cowie and Robinson 1994). We refer to this area, caudal to the abducens nucleus, as the gigantocellular head movement region. In the present paper, the anatomical connections of this region, as determined by injections of wheat-germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP), are reported. The majority of efferent and afferent connections were with areas related to head movements. 2. Efferent fibers from the region projected via two paths

In the current study, we use tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry to detail the nuclear parcellation and cellular morphology of neurons belonging to the catecholaminergic system in the brain of the Nile crocodile. In general, our results are similar to that found in another crocodilian (the spectacled caiman) and indeed other vertebrates, but certain differences of both evolutionary and functional significance were noted. TH immunopositive (TH+) neurons forming distinct nuclei were observed in the olfactory bulb (A16), hypothalamus (A11, A13-15), midbrain (A8-A10), pons (A5-A7) and m

The paralemniscal tegmental area has been determined in the brain of the New World moustached bat, Pteronotus p. parnellii, by electrical microstimulation eliciting echolocation calls and pinna movements. It is located in the dorsal tegmentum rostral and medial to the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and is characterized by medium sized and large neurons. Tracer injections (WGA-HRP) showed that the most intense input to the paralemniscal tegmental area originates in the intermediate and deep layers of the homolateral superior colliculus. The strong projections from the ipsi- and contral

BACKGROUND: Lateral medullary infarction (LMI) exhibits a variety of clinical features. Various bulbar symptoms can occur in LMI.
METHODS: Neuroradiologic findings of 46 LMI patients were examined. Their infarcts were categorized into the rostral, middle, and caudal groups and were further subdivided into the anteromedial, anterolateral, lateral (L), and posterior regions.
RESULTS: The middle medulla was the most common site (27 patients). Most lesions affected the L region alone (25 patients). Dysarthria and facial palsy occurred significantly more frequently in the rostral group than those

Attempts were made to determine the afferent and efferent connections of the medial (MVN), inferior (IVN) and lateral (LVN) vestibular nuclei (VN) in the cat and monkey using retrograde and anterograde axoplasmic transport technics. Injections of HRP and [3H]amino acids were made selectively into MVN, IVN and LVN and into: (1) MVN and IVN, (2) LVN and IVN and (3) all 4 VN. Contralateral afferents to MVN arise from (1) the nuclei prepositus (NPP) and intercalatus (NIC), (2) all parts of MVN and cell group 'y' and (3) parts of the superior vestibular nucleus (SVN), IVN and the fastigial nucleus

Nurr1 and Nur77 (NGFI-B) are orphan nuclear receptors, belonging to the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor gene superfamily. They have conserved amino acid sequence in the zinc-finger DNA binding domains and similar COOH-terminal regions, but have no known ligands. However, different expression patterns during brain development and tissue distributions of these messenger RNAs imply that they might reflect a different transcriptional role in the brain. In this study, the regional and cellular expression of messenger RNAs encoding these two proteins in rat brain has been determined by in situ hybr

The aim of this study was two-fold: 1) To provide in DA-HAN rats the basic brain monoamine data useful for later investigations of the neurochemical effects of sensory alterations and 2) to assess whether there is a relationship between the monoaminergic pattern in medial vestibular nuclei and optokinetic performances. We comparatively studied the regional brain monoamine distribution and the optokinetic performances in pigmented DA-HAN and albino Sprague-Dawley rats. As expected, the optokinetic responses and vestibulo-ocular reflex gain were by far more efficient in DA-HAN rats. Norepinephri

Chronic thiamine deprivation in the rat leads to selective neuropathological damage to pontine structures. Onset of neurological symptoms of thiamine deprivation (ataxia, loss of righting reflex) was accompanied by selective decreases (of the order of 30%) in the activity of alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (alpha KGDH) in lateral vestibular nucleus and hypothalamus. Enzyme activities were decreased to a lesser extent in medulla oblongata, striatum and hippocampus and were unchanged in other brain structures. No changes in alpha KGDH occurred prior to the onset of neurological signs of thiami

The central distribution of afferents from individual eight nerve branches (N VIII) and mechanical lateral line end organs in mormyrid fish are described. Afferents were labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) placed on the cut ends of the different N VIII branches and the anterior and posterior lateral line nerves. Descending, tangential, and magnocellular nuclei receive input almost exclusively from the utriculus and canals. Nucleus octavius receives afferents from the lateral line nerves and all N VIII branches, with one part receiving exclusive and bilateral input from the sacculus. Affe

We identify Sox14 as an exclusive marker of inhibitory projection neurons in the lateral and interposed, but not the medial, cerebellar nuclei. Sox14+ neurons make up ∼80% of Gad1+ neurons in these nuclei and are indistinguishable by soma size from other inhibitory neurons. All Sox14+ neurons of the lateral and interposed cerebellar nuclei are generated at approximately E10/10.5 and extend long-range, predominantly contralateral projections to the inferior olive. A small Sox14+ population in the adjacent vestibular nucleus "Y" sends an ipsilateral projection to the oculomotor nucleus. Cerebell
