Neural variability, detection thresholds, and information transmission in the vestibular system.

A fundamental issue in neural coding is the role of spike timing variation in information transmission of sensory stimuli. Vestibular afferents are particularly well suited to study this issue because they are classified as either regular or irregular based on resting discharge variability as well as morphology. Here, we compared the responses of each afferent class to sinusoidal and random head rotations using both information theoretic and gain measures. Information theoretic measures demonstrated that regular afferents transmitted, on average, two times more information than irregular affer

Closing an open-loop control system: vestibular substitution through the tongue.

The human postural coordination mechanism is an example of a complex closed-loop control system based on multisensory integration [9,10,13,14]. In models of this process, sensory data from vestibular, visual, tactile and proprioceptive systems are integrated as linearly additive inputs that drive multiple sensory-motor loops to provide effective coordination of body movement, posture and alignment [5-8, 10, 11]. In the absence of normal vestibular (such as from a toxic drug reaction) and other inputs, unstable posture occurs. This instability may be the result of noise in a functionally open-l

Temporal bone studies of the human peripheral vestibular system. Aminoglycoside ototoxicity.

Quantitative assessments of vestibular hair cells and Scarpa's ganglion cells were performed on 17 temporal bones from 10 individuals who had well-documented clinical evidence of aminoglycoside ototoxicity (streptomycin, kanamycin, and neomycin). Assessment of vestibular hair cells was performed by Nomarski (differential interference contrast) microscopy. Hair cell counts were expressed as densities (number of cells per 0.01 mm2 surface area of the sensory epithelium). The results were compared with age-matched normal data. Streptomycin caused a significant loss of both type I and type II hair

Skull Pneumatization Forms a Biothermal System Protecting Ocular and Vestibular Homeostasis.

Background: Paranasal sinuses and mastoid air cells have been attributed to multiple functions-such as voice resonance, cranial lightening, and pressure regulation-yet their potential role in local thermal homeostasis remains underappreciated. The thermoregulatory hypothesis, first proposed in the mid-twentieth century, was largely abandoned after the mid-century, when anthropological findings of climate-correlated variation seemed contradictory. Hypothesis: We propose that pneumatized skull regions form a three-component craniofacial biothermal system that maintains thermal stability in the o

Trigeminal Nerve and Vestibular System: Update on Pathophysiological and Clinical Links.

The points of contact between the vestibular system and the trigeminal nerve remain an active area of research. Anatomically, several connections have been clearly identified, and these may play a role in the development of various disorders. Understanding these connections also proves to be extremely valuable from a clinical perspective. It is increasingly evident that the etiopathogenesis of various vestibular disorders is multifactorial. Therefore, knowledge of the points of interaction between the two systems can assist clinicians in patient assessment and, most importantly, in selecting t

Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation and Its Effects on Sympathetic Nervous System Activation.

Cardiovascular modulation in response to movement and gravitational forces can be influenced by vestibular input or peripheral baroreflex mechanisms. Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a widely used, noninvasive method for activating neural pathways within the vestibular system, as well as associated pathways such as vestibulo-spinal, oculomotor, and vestibulo-autonomic circuits. Research on vestibulo-autonomic function via GVS has primarily focused on its effects on cardiovascular modulation and sympathetic muscle and nerve activity. However, inconsistencies in GVS application protocols

Function of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in the Vestibular-Cochlear System.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is essential for the development and functioning of the vestibular system. BDNF promotes the growth, differentiation, and synaptic plasticity of vestibular neurons, ensuring their normal operation and maintenance. According to research, BDNF is pivotal during vestibular compensation, aiding in the recovery of neuron function by remodeling the spontaneous resting potentials of damaged vestibular neurons. Additionally, BDNF exhibits dose-dependent and age-dependent characteristics during vestibular system development, with its deficiencies leading to the

A Smartphone-based gaming system for vestibular rehabilitation: A usability study.

BACKGROUNDVestibular dysfunctions result in a wide range of impairments and can have debilitating consequences on a person's day-to-day activities. Conventional vestibular rehabilitation is effective but suffers from poor therapy compliance due to boredom. Virtual reality technology can make training more engaging and allow precise quantification of the training process. However, most existing technologies for vestibular rehabilitation are expensive and not suitable for use in patients' homes and most clinics. In this pilot study, we developed and evaluated the usability of a smartphone-based

Acquired bilateral peripheral vestibular system impairment: rehabilitative options and potential outcomes.

Acquired bilateral vestibular impairment can be a devastating disorder that is most frequently the result of aminoglycoside-induced toxicity. The presenting complaints are typically oscillopsia and gait and balance disturbances. These patients can be excellent candidates for vestibular rehabilitation therapy that focuses on facilitating maximal use of any remaining vestibular function, improving gaze and postural stability through the use of visual and somatosensory cues, and improving home and workplace safety. The prognosis for recovery is determined by the extent of the loss and the presenc

Vestibular function assessment in patients with Meniere's disease: the vestibulospinal system.

The state-of-the-art approach to clinical assessment of vestibular disturbances includes a number of procedures in which it is assumed that the status of major vestibular pathways is quantified independently from converging somatosensory and visual influences. Although it has been known for some time that this approach has limitations in a highly integrative system in which inputs from a number of sensory modalities interact, a practical remedy has been only recently forthcoming. Using an approach to assessment of the vestibulospinal system developed by Nashner, the application of moving platf

The Vestibular System: A Newly Identified Regulator of Bone Homeostasis Acting Through the Sympathetic Nervous System.

The vestibular system is a small bilateral structure located in the inner ear, known as the organ of balance and spatial orientation. It senses head orientation and motion, as well as body motion in the three dimensions of our environment. It is also involved in non-motor functions such as postural control of blood pressure. These regulations are mediated via anatomical projections from vestibular nuclei to brainstem autonomic centers and are involved in the maintenance of cardiovascular function via sympathetic nerves. Age-associated dysfunction of the vestibular organ contributes to an incre

Vestibulo-cortical hemispheric dominance: The link between anxiety and the vestibular system?

Vestibular processing and anxiety networks are functionally intertwined, as demonstrated by reports of reciprocal influences upon each other. Yet whether there is an underlying link between these two systems remains unknown. Previous findings have highlighted the involvement of hemispheric lateralisation in processing of both anxiety and vestibular signals. Accordingly, we explored the interaction between vestibular cortical processing and anxiety by assessing the relationship between anxiety levels and the degree of hemispheric lateralisation of vestibulo-cortical processing in 64 right-hande

Role of the vestibular system in regulating respiratory muscle activity during movement.

More than 32,000 patients are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States per year and the disease is associated with very high mortality (1). Urgent need exists to develop novel clinically-translatable therapeutic strategies that can improve on the dismal survival statistics of pancreatic cancer patients. Although gene therapy in cancer has shown a tremendous promise, the major challenge is in the development of safe and effective delivery system, which can lead to sustained transgene expression. Nitric oxide in the afferent synaptic transmission of the axolotl vestibular system.

This study was performed using intracellular and multiunit extracellular recording techniques in order to characterize the role of nitric oxide in the afferent synaptic transmission of the vestibular system of the axolotl (Ambystoma tigrinum). Bath application of nitric oxide synthase inhibitors N(G)-nitro-L-arginine (0.01microM to 10microM) and N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (0.1microM to 1000microM) elicited a dose-dependent decrease in the basal discharge of the semicircular canal afferent fibers. N(G)-Nitro-L-arginine also diminished the response to mechanical stimuli. Moreo
