Lost in Transition: The Behavioral Health Needs of Veterans in Eight County Jails.

The behavioral health needs, service utilization, and discharge planning provision of veterans in jails have been understudied, yet practitioners must understand each component to ensure veterans' behavioral health needs are met through linkage to culturally-appropriate services. Thus, this study asked: How do veterans differ from non-veterans regarding behavioral health needs, jail-based service engagement, and discharge planning within jails? How do jails identify veterans and are they referred to culturally-appropriate services? In a booking sample across eight jails, this evaluative, cross

Moving Beyond Housing: Service Implications for Veterans Entering Permanent Supportive Housing.

As a result of efforts to end homelessness among U.S. veterans, more former service members are entering permanent supportive housing (PSH). While PSH has been successfully used to house homeless veterans, more research is needed about services beyond housing placement and retention. This study uses the Gelberg-Andersen behavioral model for vulnerable populations to determine associations between predisposing, enabling, and need characteristics and recent service use (i.e., services to satisfy basic needs, occupational development, financial, healthcare, mental health) among unaccompanied home

Evaluating Veterans Response Teams and Police Interventions on Veterans' Health Care Utilization.

This study examined the effects of veteran-specific cooperative police interventions, including a Veterans Response Team (VRT) and broad collaboration between local police departments and a Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center police department (local-VA police [LVP]), on veterans' health care utilization. Data were analyzed on 241 veterans (51 received VRT and 190 received LVP intervention) in Wilmington, Delaware. Nearly all veterans in the sample were enrolled in VA health care at the time of police intervention. Veterans who received VRT or LVP interventions showed similar increases in use

Applying behavior change theory to technology promoting veteran mental health care seeking.

Despite the availability of effective mental health interventions, the vast majority of veterans with a mental disorder underutilize psychological services. Contemporary research has revealed that several factors such as low education, stigma, stoicism, lack of knowledge, and negative beliefs about mental health services are associated with veterans' underutilization of services. In this article, the authors provide an overview of factors that affect symptomatic veterans' decisions about whether to seek mental health services. Second, they describe the theory of planned behavior (Ajzen & Fishb

Traumatic brain injury and VA service use among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Veterans experiencing homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: United States Veterans experiencing homelessness often have myriad health concerns that can impact their functioning. Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (NHPI) homeless Veterans are up to 82% more likely to have a traumatic brain injury (TBI) diagnosis than non-NHPI homeless Veterans, which can further impact these Veterans' psychosocial functioning. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers services to address the health and social needs of these Veterans. METHODS: We examined VA electronic medical record data from 12,205 NHPI Veterans identified as homeless from 1/2005-7

Military sexual trauma among Veterans using and not using VA justice-related programing: A national examination.

Veterans accessing Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Justice Program (VJP) services have high rates of depression, substance misuse, and posttraumatic stress disorder. Although factors that may confer risk for mental health sequelae among these Veterans have been identified (e.g., childhood abuse, combat exposure), limited research has examined report of military sexual trauma (MST) among Veterans accessing VJP services. As survivors of MST experience myriad chronic health conditions which necessitate identification and referral to evidence-based care, identifying MST survivors amon

Rural Veteran Perceptions of a Virtual Health Resource Center in a Community-Based Setting.

BACKGROUND: Virtual care (VC) services (e.g., telemedicine) could help address transportation barriers to healthcare among rural Veterans. The Veterans Health Administration (VA) Virtual Health Resource Centers (VHRCs) provide in-person and telephone technology support for Veterans to use VC, but few are in rural locations. Our objective was to understand Veteran perceptions of a novel implementation of a rural, community-based VHRC.   METHODS: We conducted our study using an established learning health system model and a rapid qualitative analysis approach to collect and analyze data. Mental health treatment utilization among Gulf War era veterans with probable alcohol use disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is prevalent among veterans, and excessive alcohol use is associated with significant mental and physical health consequences. Currently, the largest cohort of veterans seeking services at the VA are those from the 1990s Gulf War Era. This cohort of veterans is unique due to the nature of their deployment resulting in a myriad of unexplained symptoms collectively known as "Gulf War Illness" and higher rates of mental health problems. The present study sought to examine the association between probable AUD and mental health treatment utilization in a sam

A latent class analysis to identify subgroups of VHA using homeless veterans at greater risk for suicide mortality.

BACKGROUND: Homeless Veterans are at substantially elevated risk for suicide mortality; however, understanding of drivers of suicide in this population remains limited. METHOD: Building upon prior work, we conducted a retrospective chart review, comprised of a latent class analysis of 724,752 Veterans with use of Veterans Health Administration (VHA) homeless services 2005-2018. RESULTS: A five-model class membership solution was identified. Among these classes, risk for suicide mortality was greatest among Veterans with the highest psychiatric burden and high VHA service use. Those experienc

Access to the US Department of Veterans Affairs health system: self-reported barriers to care among returnees of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) implemented the Polytrauma System of Care to meet the health care needs of military and veterans with multiple injuries returning from combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Studies are needed to systematically assess barriers to use of comprehensive and exclusive VA healthcare services from the perspective of veterans with polytrauma and with other complex health outcomes following their service in Afghanistan and Iraq. These perspectives can inform policy with regard to the optimal delivery of care to returning veterans. METHODS:
