Patient variation in veterinary medicine: part I. Influence of altered physiological states.

In veterinary medicine, the characterization of a drug's pharmacokinetic (PK) properties is generally based upon data that are derived from studies that employ small groups of young healthy animals, often of a single breed. These are also the data from which population predictions are often generated to forecast drug exposure characteristics in the target population under clinical conditions of use. In veterinary medicine, it is rare to find information on the covariates that can influence drug exposure characteristics. Therefore, it is important to recognize some of the factors that can alter

[Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in veterinary medicine: a "new emerging pathogen"?].

The problem of nosocomial infections is of increasing importance in veterinary medicine. As an example, this review summarizes current knowledge regarding methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) as a typical example, as these pathogens are the most important agents of nosocomial infections in human medicine worldwide and are being increasingly reported in veterinary medicine. MRSA are classified by their ability to be resistant against oxacillin/methicillin, this feature being confered by mecA, a gene which was acquired by horizontal gene transfer of the staphylococcal gene cassette

[Animal nutrition in veterinary medicine: actual situations: decreased feed intake in swine].

Two cases of vitamin D3 intoxication in piglets are described. The dietary concentrations of vitamin D3 were 265 and 435 thousand IE/kg. Decreased feed intake, growth depression and polyuria or polydypsia were observed. In some animals hypercalcemia and symptoms of impaired renal function were found. Pathological findings included calcinosis of several tissues and degenerative damage.

Biophotonics in veterinary medicine: current clinical applications, translational challenges, and emerging opportunities.

Biophotonics, a relatively new scientific field, applies optical or light-based techniques to biology and medicine. These approaches enable non-invasive visualization, monitoring, and characterization of biological tissues and processes, thereby supporting diagnostics, treatments, monitoring, imaging, and surgery. Biophotonic capabilities could be particularly valuable in veterinary medicine, where patients cannot verbally describe symptoms and where rapid, non-invasive assessment may reduce reliance on invasive sampling and, in selected cases, sedation or anesthesia. This perspective review e

From bench to bedside and back: translational cardiovascular interventions in veterinary medicine.

Veterinary interventional cardiology exemplifies the power of reverse translation in cardiovascular medicine. This review examines how procedures initially tested in animal models, refined in human medicine, and subsequently reintroduced to veterinary practice have completed the translational cycle. We analyze several key interventions - pacemaker implantation, patent ductus arteriosus occlusion, balloon valvuloplasty, radiofrequency ablation, septal defect closure, and mitral valve repair by V-Clamp (a veterinary version of the human MitraClip device) - demonstrating how each has evolved thro

Comprehensive comparative study of Chiari-like malformation in veterinary and human medicine.

This review aims to enrich our understanding of Chiari-like malformation (CLM) by combining human and veterinary insights, and providing a detailed cross-species overview. CLM is a developmental abnormality characterised by caudal displacement of the hindbrain into the foramen magnum due to an entire brain parenchymal shift caused by insufficient skull volume. This malformation leads to a progressive obstruction at the craniocervical junction, which disrupts the normal cerebrospinal fluid flow, leading to secondary syringomyelia. The clinical signs of CLM and syringomyelia include phantom scra

Role of autopsy imaging in veterinary forensic medicine: experiences in 39 cases.

While numerous scientific studies have suggested the usefulness of autopsy imaging (Ai) in the field of human forensic medicine, the use of imaging modalities for the purpose of veterinary forensics is currently scant. The current study performed Ai on suspicious dead animals requested by the police department to determine their cause of death. Radiography and/or computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging were performed on 39 suspicious dead animals before necropsy. After diagnostic imaging, pathological examination was performed, with drug testing added as needed. Among the 39 case

Printing 3D models of canine jaw fractures for teaching undergraduate veterinary medicine.

PURPOSE: To develop 3D anatomical models, and corresponding radiographs, of canine jaw fractures. METHODS: A base model was generated from a mandibular bone scan. With this model it was possible to perform fracture planning according to the anatomical location. RESULTS: The 3D base model of the canine mandible was similar in conformation to the natural bone, demonstrating structures such as canine tooth crowns, premolars and molars, mental foramina, body of the mandible, ramus of the mandible, masseteric fossa, the coronoid process, condylar process, and angular process. It was not possible

An unusual pedestrian road trauma: from forensic pathology to forensic veterinary medicine.

Traffic accidents have increased in the last decade, pedestrians being the most affected group. At autopsy, it is evident that the most common cause of pedestrian death is central nervous system injury, followed by skull base fractures, internal bleeding, lower limb haemorrhage, skull vault fractures, cervical spinal cord injury and airway compromise. The attribution of accident responsibility can be realised through reconstruction of road accident dynamics, investigation of the scene, survey of the vehicle involved and examination of the victim(s). A case study concerning a car accident where

The clinical use of cannabidiol and cannabidiolic acid-rich hemp in veterinary medicine and lessons from human medicine.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is an integral neuromodulatory system involved in neuronal development, synaptic plasticity, and homeostasis regarding immunity, as well as brain and other physiological functions such as anxiety, pain, metabolic regulation, and bone growth. Cannabis is a plant that contains exogenous cannabinoids, which have the potential for profound interplay within the ECS as enzymatic inhibitors or receptor-mediated interactions. Activation of cannabinoid receptors leads to various intracellular signaling processes that are involved in cellular functions, but those interac

The impact of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Heads of Medicines Agencies (HMA) to address shortages of human and veterinary medicines across Europe.

Shortages of medicines are a global public health challenge with a significant impact on patient care. While the issue is at the top of the agenda of EU policymakers, regulators and healthcare providers, shortages are a complex problem with many contributing factors requiring multifaceted solutions. This article is a reflection of the work EMA and network of EU regulatory agencies for medicines carried out since 2012, in particular its taskforce, set up in 2016 to provide strategic and structural solutions to tackle shortages in the EU. Since its inception, the taskforce played a key role in s

Analysis of sales of antimicrobials used in veterinary medicine in Poland compared to Europe.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a global threat to public and animal health, and its progression is closely linked to the use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine. In Europe, programmes such as the European Surveillance of Veterinary Antimicrobial Consumption (ESVAC) and subsequently European Sales and Use of Antimicrobials for Veterinary Medicine (ESUAvet) monitor and attempt to reduce the consumption of antimicrobials in food-producing animals. The study analyses the trends in the volume and sales structure of veterinary antimicrobials in Poland in 2011-2023 and compar

The Role of Polyhydroxyalkanoates in Veterinary Medicine: Biosynthesis, Material Modifications and Clinical Applications.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a structurally diverse family of microbially synthesised, biodegradable polyesters that accumulate as intracellular carbon and energy reserves under conditions of nutrient imbalance. Their combination of adjustable mechanical performance with controlled hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation, and non-toxic degradation intermediates (ex. D-3-hydroxybutyrate) has made them a longstanding candidate biomaterial for human tissue engineering, drug delivery, and resorbable implants. Comparatively, their application in veterinary medicine remains an emerging and fragment

Advances and Challenges in the Diagnosis of Vector-Borne Protozoal Infections in Veterinary Medicine.

Vector-borne protozoal infections-including babesiosis, theileriosis, hepatozoonosis, trypanosomosis, and leishmaniosis-impose a substantial burden on livestock and companion animal health worldwide and carry important zoonotic and public health implications. Accurate diagnosis is essential yet challenging, given the diversity of parasite genera, their markedly different tissue tropisms, and the uneven distribution of diagnostic resources across veterinary settings. This review provides an integrated overview of the principal diagnostic approaches available, structured around the biological lo
