The Influence of Empathy and Morality of Violent Video Game Characters on Gamers' Aggression.

According to the General Aggression Model, situational factors (such as the game characters) and personal factors both affect a gamer's acquisition of aggressive behavior. Previous studies have found not only that the surface features of game characters, such as appearance and clothing, but also that their inherent characteristics, such as morality and identity, can influence a gamer's attitude and behavior. Research has also shown that empathy, as a personal factor, can protect gamers from the impact of media violence. However, past research has focused primarily on single factors affecting t

Is video-game playing a risk factor for pathological gambling in Australian adolescents?

Very little research has been conducted to examine the relationship between video-game playing and gambling in adolescence. In this study, 2,669 adolescents aged 13-17 years were surveyed to obtained details of their involvement in gambling and video-game playing as well as a measure of pathological gambling (the DSM-IV-J). The results showed that, the frequency of video game playing was significantly related to pathological gambling, but that the effect size was very small and largely accounted for by the greater popularity of both activities amongst boys. There was some evidence for stronger

Distraction with a hand-held video game reduces pediatric preoperative anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Video games have received widespread application in health care for distraction and behavior modification therapy. Studies on the effect of cognitive distraction during the preoperative period are lacking. We evaluated the efficacy of an interactive distraction, a hand-held video game (VG) in reducing preoperative anxiety in children. METHODS: In a randomized, prospective study of 112 children aged 4-12 years undergoing outpatient surgery, anxiety was assessed after admission and again at mask induction of anesthesia, using the modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS). Characterizing the cognitive and mental health benefits of exercise and video game playing.

Two of the most actively studied modifiable lifestyle factors, exercise and video gaming, are regularly touted as easy and effective ways to enhance brain function and/or protect it from age-related decline. However, some critical lingering questions and methodological inconsistencies leave it unclear what aspects of brain health are affected by exercise and video gaming. In this cross-sectional global online study, we recruited over 1000 people and collected data about participants' physical activity levels, time spent playing video games, mental health, and cognitive performance using tests

Designing a Narrative-Based Video Game for Adolescents Coping with a Parent's Cancer.

We developed the narrative video game Sophia that immerses users in the story of a 13-year-old girl during her father's 18-month battle with glioblastoma and her journey toward resilience during her high school years following his passing. The game is designed to engage adolescents coping with parental cancer in multiple gameplay modes and levels, the character, and the outcome of the story as a way to build connections and explore the themes of illness, dying, bereavement, and resilience. The scenes at each level correspond to the stages of glioblastoma illness as well as the teenage mileston

Periodic tapping mechanisms of skill learning in a fast-paced video game.

Timing plays a critical role when building up motor skill. In this study, we investigated and simulated human skill learning in a simplified variant of the Space Fortress video game named Auto Orbit with a strong timing component. Our principal aim was to test whether a computational model designed to simulate keypress actions repeated at rates slower than 500 ms (>500 ms) could also simulate human learning with repeated keypress actions taking place at very fast rates (≤500 ms). The main finding was that increasing speed stress forced human participants to qualitatively switch their behavior

Design of a video game for assessment of executive functions in deaf and hearing children.

This study investigates the effectiveness of a computerized cognitive test battery embedded within a video game to assess executive functions (EF) in deaf and hearing children. We evaluated a diverse cohort of 290 elementary school students aged 5 to 13 years (mean age = 8.86, SD = 1.96), comprising 74 sign language users, 14 Spanish-speaking deaf participants, 23 children with mixed communication methods, and 179 typically hearing individuals. Our statistical analysis focused on item discrimination, reliability, and criterion validation of the game-based assessments. The results indicated hig

Reserve your judgment on "Draconian" Chinese video gaming restrictions on children •

China imposed strict restrictions on young people's participation in videogaming from September 2021. Colder Carras et al.'s commentary (2021) referred to this policy as 'draconian,' i.e., 'excessively harsh and severe.' However, any opinion on whether this policy is 'draconian' is a value judgment, and any judgment on its 'effectiveness' ought to be reserved until proven or disproven by empirical evidence. Indeed, the Chinese policy is neither potentially ineffective nor draconian, and is already providing at least one identifiable benefit: enhancing consumer protection by effectively reducin

The relationship of loot box purchases to problem video gaming and problem gambling.

Loot boxes are virtual items in many video games that let players "gamble" on an item of chance. Loot boxes bring an element of gambling into video games, which might prime video game users to engage in online gambling activities. However, few studies have focused on this emerging issue. The present study investigated the relationships between loot box purchases and both problem video gaming and problem gambling severity. Cross-sectional, self-report data were collected from 618 adult video gamers (M = 27 years of age, SD = 8.9, 63.7% male) via an online survey. Nearly half of the sample (44.2

GamCog: A measurement instrument for miscognitions related to gamblification, gambling, and video gaming.

"Gamblification" is a rapidly emerging form of media convergence between the more chance-based activity of gambling and the more skill-based activity of (video) gaming, for example in the competitive video gaming known as esports. The marriage of video gaming and gambling has been theorized as bringing about new forms of gambling-related cognitive processes in individuals and affecting the ways in which they approach and evaluate gambling situations. As such, a pertinent research problem is whether existing measurement instruments designed to identify gambling related cognitions can be employe

Action video game players form more detailed representation of objects.

Previous research has clearly demonstrated action video game improvements in visual and spatial attention. The present study investigated action video game related changes in the resolution of representations for both dynamic and stationary objects by comparing video game players (VGP) and non-video game players (NVGP). In a color wheel task (adapted from Zhang & Luck, 2008) where viewers were asked to freely recall the color of briefly presented objects, we found that VGPs were more accurate than NVGPs. Furthermore, in the Multiple Identity Tracking task (Horowitz et al., 2007), we found that

Video-game play induces plasticity in the visual system of adults with amblyopia.

UNLABELLED: Abnormal visual experience during a sensitive period of development disrupts neuronal circuitry in the visual cortex and results in abnormal spatial vision or amblyopia. Here we examined whether playing video games can induce plasticity in the visual system of adults with amblyopia. Specifically 20 adults with amblyopia (age 15-61 y; visual acuity: 20/25-20/480, with no manifest ocular disease or nystagmus) were recruited and allocated into three intervention groups: action videogame group (n = 10), non-action videogame group (n = 3), and crossover control group (n = 7). Effect of opponent type on moral emotions and responses to video game play.

This study suggests that fighting against different types of opponents in video games (e.g., human opponents vs. monster opponents) may lead to different emotional responses and moral judgments toward game characters. Based on Bandura's moral disengagement theory, this study proposes that shooting at monster opponents makes game players feel less guilty and judge the player-controlled character as more morally justified. An experiment was conducted in which participants played shooting games with either human opponents or monster opponents. The results show that when playing against monster op

From game engagement to craving responses - The role of gratification and compensation experiences during video-gaming in casual and at-risk gamers.

INTRODUCTION: Although playing videogames is a common leisure activity some individuals develop problematic gaming behaviors or even symptoms of a gaming disorder. Game engagement may be involved in reinforcement learning that may result in experiences of craving, an important feature of gaming disorder. In the following study we aimed to approach the question which aspects contribute to increased craving for gaming. METHODS: Overall, 439 individuals participated in an online survey, answering questionnaires on game engagement, experience of gratification and compensation, craving, and sympto

The same video game in 2D, 3D or virtual reality - How does technology impact game evaluation and brand placements?

Video game technology is changing from 2D to 3D and virtual reality (VR) graphics. In this research, we analyze how an identical video game that is either played in a 2D, stereoscopic 3D or Head-Mounted-Display (HMD) VR version is experienced by the players, and how brands that are placed in the video game are affected. The game related variables, which are analyzed, are presence, attitude towards the video game and arousal while playing the video game. Brand placement related variables are attitude towards the placed brands and memory (recall and recognition) for the placed brands. 237 player
