RATIONALE: Langerhans cell sarcoma (LCS) is a rare, high-grade neoplasm characterized by overtly malignant cytologic features and a poor prognosis. Herein, we present a rare case of langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) that later transformed into langerhans cell sarcoma 11 months after the benign mass was excised from soft tissue in the right groin.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 41-year-old patient who presented with a mass in the right groin for 3 years earlier after being bitten by ants.

BACKGROUND: Malignant hemangioendotheliomas of the thyroid are rare tumors predominantly seen in areas with endemic goiter such as the Alpine regions. The estimated incidence of the disease is between 0.15 and 0.25 per 100.000 inhabitants annually for Western Austria. The tumor is regarded as radio-resistant, and its prognosis is reported to be dismal.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) frequently metastasizes to lymph nodes, but metastasis to the spine is rare. We report a case of cutaneous SCC with metastasis to a particularly rare region, the thoracic spine, which evolved into a spinal cord compression. In November 2005, a 73-year-old man underwent a resection of a primary tumor and standard inguinal lymphadenectomy for a cutaneous SCC of the right fourth toe, defined as T2N1M1 stage. Over the next 3 years, he was given peplomycin, CAV (cisplatin, adriamycin, and vindesine) therapy and radiotherapy for multiple lymph node metastases.

We have defined "clinical N2" disease in non-small cell lung cancer to mean the presence of enlarged metastatic mediastinal nodes evident on plain chest roentgenograms or widening of the carina at bronchoscopy.
