Epidemiology, virology and clinical aspects of hantavirus infections: an overview.

At the end of 2019 and 2020s, a wave of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) epidemics worldwide has catalyzed a new era of 'communicable infectious diseases'. However, the world is not currently prepared to deal with the growing burden of COVID-19, with the unexpected arrival of Hantavirus infection heading to the next several healthcare emergencies in public. Hantavirus is a significant class of zoonotic pathogens of negative-sense single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA). Hemorrhagic renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) are the two major clinical manifestations. T

Hepatitis C virus: virology, diagnosis and management of antiviral therapy.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects approximately 170 million individuals worldwide. Prevention of HCV infection complications is based on antiviral therapy with the combination of pegylated interferon alfa and ribavirin. The use of serological and virological tests has become essential in the management of HCV infection in order to diagnose infection, guide treatment decisions and assess the virological response to antiviral therapy. Anti-HCV antibody testing and HCV RNA testing are used to diagnose acute and chronic hepatitis C. The HCV genotype should be systematically determined before treatme

Virology, pathology, and clinical manifestations of West Nile virus disease.

West Nile virus (WNV) causes epidemics of febrile illness, meningitis, encephalitis, and flaccid paralysis. Since it was first detected in New York City in 1999, and through 2004, >16,000 WNV disease cases have been reported in the United States. Over the past 5 years, research on WNV disease has expanded rapidly. This review highlights new information regarding the virology, clinical manifestations, and pathology of WNV disease, which will provide a new platform for further research into diagnosis, treatment, and possible prevention of WNV through vaccination.

Experimental poliomyelitis in bonnet monkey. Clinical features, virology and pathology.

We have investigated the distribution of virus and the pathology in the spinal cords of bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata) with experimental paralytic poliomyelitis induced by inoculating poliovirus type 1 (Mahoney) into the right ulnar nerve. Viraemia and alimentary tract infection due to the inoculated virus were found in all monkeys. Between two and seven days after the onset of limb paralysis, the animals were killed and the spinal cord examined. Virus was isolated from the cervical enlargement, thoracic region and lumbar enlargement in titres ranging from 10(2.5) to 10(6.4) TCID50/gram of ti

[Virologic diagnosis of meningoencephalitis].

Many viruses can be responsible for meningoencephalitis. The principal ones are listed and the main features of their virological diagnosis are described. It must be borne in mind that a virological diagnosis must always be guided by the clinical context and that viral meningoencephalitis, relatively uncommon in Europe, is much more frequent in tropical countries.

Autophagy meets plant virology: From molecular crosstalk to outstanding challenges.

Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved degradation and recycling pathway that plays essential roles in plant development, stress adaptation, and immunity. Over the past decade, increasing evidence has revealed that autophagy also shapes the outcome of plant-virus interactions. This review summarizes current understanding of the plant autophagy machinery as well as the experimental approaches used to monitor autophagic flux during viral infection. We then explore the diverse roles of autophagy in the plant-virus interface, highlighting its function as an antiviral mechanism that targets viral

Mpox virus: virology, molecular epidemiology, and global public health challenges.

Monkeypox (Mpox), a zoonotic disease caused by the Mpox virus (MPXV), has re-emerged as a significant global health concern, particularly since the 2022 outbreaks in non-endemic countries. MPXV shares close virological and genetic similarities with other orthopoxviruses, notably variola virus. The current circulating strains, primarily of clade IIb, exhibit enhanced human-to-human transmissibility. This review synthesizes recent advances in MPXV virology, pathogenesis, molecular evolution, clinical features, and diagnostic techniques. In addition, we highlight the mounting public health challe

Evolution of Virology: Science History through Milestones and Technological Advancements.

The history of virology, which is marked by transformative breakthroughs, spans microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. From the development of Jenner's smallpox vaccine in 1796 to 20th-century innovations such as ultrafiltration and electron microscopy, the field of virology has undergone significant development. In 1898, Beijerinck laid the conceptual foundation for virology, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of the discipline. Advancements in influenza A virus research in 1933 by Richard Shope furthered our understanding of respiratory pathogens. Additionally, i

Virology, ecology, epidemiology, pathology, and treatment of eastern equine encephalitis.

Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) was one of the first-recognized neuroinvasive arboviral diseases in North America, and it remains the most lethal. Although EEE is known to have periodic spikes in infection rates, there is increasing evidence that it may be undergoing a change in its prevalence and its public health burden. Numerous factors shape the scope of EEE in humans, and there are important similarities with other emergent viral diseases that have surfaced or strengthened in recent years. Because environmental and ecological conditions that broadly influence the epidemiology of arbovir

Epstein-Barr virus: the molecular virology and the associated diseases.

Ever since its discovery as the first human oncogenic virus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has been the focus of many researchers and is one of the best-studied pathogens. EBV is a major causative agent of Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorder, NK/T cell lymphoma, chronic active EBV disease, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, gastric carcinoma, and infectious mononucleosis. Although a truly comprehensive understanding of the virus and the associated disorders remains elusive, major breakthroughs in molecular cloning and omics analyses are shedding new light on

Hepatitis B Core-Related Antigen: From Virology to Clinical Application.

Hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) is a composite measure of the serum levels of hepatitis B e antigen, hepatitis B core antigen, and a 22-kDa precore protein. It has been shown to reflect the level and transcriptional activity of covalently closed circular DNA in the liver. Longitudinal cohort studies have improved our understanding of the role of this novel viral marker in the natural history of chronic hepatitis B. HBcrAg kinetics reflect the response to peginterferon, and its role in defining guidelines for stopping peginterferon therapy has been evaluated. HBcrAg is a marker of int

A review on hepatitis D: From virology to new therapies.

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a defective virus that requires the hepatitis B virus (HBV) to complete its life cycle in human hepatocytes. HDV virions contain an envelope incorporating HBV surface antigen protein and a ribonucleoprotein containing the viral circular single-stranded RNA genome associated with both forms of hepatitis delta antigen, the only viral encoded protein. Replication is mediated by the host cell DNA-dependent RNA polymerases. HDV infects up to72 million people worldwide and is associated with an increased risk of severe and rapidly progressive liver disease. Pegylated i
