Validation of Binocular Vision and Ocular Surface Assessment Tools in Digital Eye Strain Syndrome: The DESIROUS Study.

Background: To understand if binocular vision disorders are associated with Digital Eye Strain Syndrome (DESS), a study protocol is needed to ensure consistency across observational studies. This study aims to test the feasibility of a protocol to assess DESS, screen time, binocular vision, and dry eye. Methods: DESIROUS is an observational cross-sectional study among Polytechnic students at the Lisbon School of Health Technology, Portugal. The protocol includes three questionnaires (Computer Vision Syndrome Questionnaire [CVS-Q], Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey [CISS], and Dry Eye Qu

Transcranial random noise stimulation and exercise do not modulate ocular dominance plasticity in adults with normal vision.

Short-term deprivation of one eye by monocular patching causes a temporary increase in the contribution of that eye to binocular vision when the eye patch is removed. This effect, known as ocular dominance plasticity, provides a model of neuroplasticity within the human binocular visual system. We investigated whether physical exercise and the non-invasive brain stimulation technique transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), two interventions that may increase visual cortex neuroplasticity, enhance ocular dominance plasticity when delivered individually or in combination. Ocular dominance

Causes and prevalence of non-vision impairing ocular conditions among a rural adult population in sw Uganda.

Information is scanty about the extent of ocular morbidity in developing countries, particularly for non-vision impairing conditions (NVIC), although these constitute the majority of consultations in eye clinics. We have conducted a survey to determine the prevalence and causes of NVIC in a Ugandan adult population and compared our findings with the work pattern of the district hospital. Adults were screened using Snellen's illiterate E chart and those found with visual impairment (acuity less than 6/18) in either eye were referred to a low-vision clinic, and those with obvious ocular disease

Electrically Induced Blink for the Prevention of Ocular Symptoms and Blurred Vision in Patients With Acute Facial Nerve Palsy.

Objectives: Facial nerve palsy causes blurred vision and ocular discomfort due to deficits in blinking and eye closure. The objective of this study was to determine whether eye-blinks could be elicited by electrical stimulation and whether electrically induced blink would have an effect on the visual acuity and ocular symptoms in patients with acute facial nerve palsy. Methods: The zygomatic branch of the facial nerve of fifteen participants with acute facial nerve palsy was electrically stimulated in order to elicit a blink. In successful cases, the participant proceeded with a two-hour TV wa

Vision loss due to coincident ocular and central causes in a patient with Heidenhain variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a degenerative disease of the brain associated with a rapidly progressive spongiform encephalopathy. Visual symptoms and neuro-ophthalmological signs are not infrequent, and presentation to an ophthalmologist may result. A case is reported of an 89-years-old gentleman who presented with a short history of isolated deterioration in vision. He underwent ocular intervention but subsequently developed progressive dementia, asterixis, myoclonus, cerebellar and extrapyramidal signs, and cortical blindness. An electroencephalogram was consistent with CJD. The patien

Comparative risk of blindness and vision-threatening ocular comorbidities in patients with Behçet's disease versus the general population.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the risk of blindness and vision-threatening ocular comorbidities in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) vs the general population. METHODS: Using 2002-2017 Korea National Health Insurance Service database, we did a population-based cohort study comparing newly diagnosed BD patients and age- and sex-matched non-BD controls at a 1:5 ratio. The primary outcome was blindness, defined as a best-corrected visual acuity of ≤20/500 in the better-seeing eye. Secondary outcomes were vision-threatening ocular comorbidities (cataract, glaucoma and retinal disorders) that require su

Vision change and quality of life in the elderly. Response to cataract surgery and treatment of other chronic ocular conditions.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of health care in older populations has increasingly focused on quality of life as a critical outcome of treatment. Vision is assumed to be central to functioning. Data suggest that aging, in itself, is associated with a decline in visual functioning, which, in turn, is related to a decline in physical and mental functioning. Other studies indicate that cataract surgery is followed by significant improvement in vision and visual function. Our objective was to test these assumptions. DESIGN: Prospective study of 1021 patients, consecutively drawn from 76 randomly selected

How Well Do Ocular Trauma Scores Predict Vision after Open-Globe Injury?: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

TOPIC: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate the predictive accuracy of ocular trauma scoring systems, particularly the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) and Pediatric OTS (POTS), for estimating final visual outcomes after open-globe injuries (OGIs). CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Open-globe injuries are vision-threatening injuries with significant global morbidity. In children, amblyopia risk and age-related limitations in visual assessment complicate prognostication. Although OTS and POTS are commonly used for counseling and triage, their accuracy and applicability in pediatric patients remain unc

Absolute and relative morbidity burdens attributable to ocular and vision-related conditions, active component, U.S. Armed Forces, 2018.

The current report used an ocular and vision disease classification system and several healthcare burden measures to quantify the impacts of various ocular and vision-related illnesses and injuries among active component service members of the U.S. Armed Forces during 2018. More service members received care for refractive error and related disorders than any other ocular and vision-related major category; this category accounted for slightly more than one-half (51.1%) of all ocular and vision-related medical encounters. Conjunctival disorders accounted for the next highest percentage of total

Effect of continuity nursing on vision-related quality of life, anxiety, and perceived social support in patients with ocular trauma-related low vision: A propensity score-matched cohort study.

Ocular trauma is a leading cause of acquired low vision in working-age adults and often results in long-term functional disability and psychosocial burden. Post-discharge care strategies tailored to this population remain underdeveloped. This retrospective, propensity score-matched cohort study included adult patients with ocular trauma-related low vision treated at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zunyi Medical University (the First People's Hospital of Zunyi) between January 2019 and December 2024. Patients who received structured continuity nursing after discharge were matched 1:1 to contro

A comparative study of low-vision patients: Their ocular disease and preference for one specific series of light transmission filters.

One hundred low-vision patients who complained of sensitivity to light were permitted to select any one of five filters (Recreational Innovations Co.) The results show that patients with certain types of pathology prefer to use specific filters to control the light reaching their eyes. Patients with albinism chose amber filters. Patients with glaucoma of diabetes both selected the same filter. Most patients with retinitis pigmentosa found most help from a filter which allowed only 2% light transmission.

Recently Approved Drugs for Lowering and Controlling Intraocular Pressure to Reduce Vision Loss in Ocular Hypertensive and Glaucoma Patients.

Serious vision loss occurs in patients affected by chronically raised intraocular pressure (IOP), a characteristic of many forms of glaucoma where damage to the optic nerve components causes progressive degeneration of retinal and brain neurons involved in visual perception. While many risk factors abound and have been validated for this glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON), the major one is ocular hypertension (OHT), which results from the accumulation of excess aqueous humor (AQH) fluid in the anterior chamber of the eye. Millions around the world suffer from this asymptomatic and progressive
