[Use of Pulfrich's phenomenon in ophthalmological diagnosis].

The Pulfrich effect is a simply observable visual stereo phenomenon arising when the visual latency for one eye is longer than for the another. In the paper the review of the literature devoted to the application of this phenomenon for the ophthalmological diagnosis is presented. The authors come to the conclusion that the Pulfrich effect can be successfully used in clinical practice as an indicator of many ophthalmological disorders especially of optic neuritis.

Reexamining the Relationship Between Stereopsis and Motion Parallax.

Depth perception depends on two powerful cues, stereopsis and motion parallax, that share similar geometric foundations but operate under distinct constraints. When observer motion is self-generated and the scene is stationary, the two can produce comparable depth percepts. However, disparity generally supports finer discrimination and more accurate depth magnitude percepts. Real-world depth perception from both cues is complicated by eye movements and matching ambiguity, but motion parallax faces additional challenges due to head movements and the presence of object and scene motion. Interocular conflict attracts attention.

During binocular rivalry, perception alternates.between dissimilar images presented dichoptically. Since.its discovery, researchers have debated whether the phenomenon is subject to attentional control. While it is now clear that attentional control over binocular rivalry is possible, the opposite is less evident: Is interocular conflict (i.e., the situation leading to binocular rivalry) able to attract attention? In order to answer this question, we used a change blindness paradigm in which observers looked for salient changes in two alternating frames depicting natural scenes. Each frame cont

The loss of fusion in adults with intractable diplopia (central fusion disruption).

People over the age of 10 years can lose their fusion ability. This acquired disruption of fusion gives rise to intractable diplopia without suppression. An involuntary vertical bobbing movement of the non-fixing eye, present only with both eyes open, occurs at or near the angle of superimposition. This appears to be a unique and characteristic sign of acquired disruption of fusion and was present in all cases. Other causes of diplopia are mentioned and differentiated. Acquired central fusion disruption usually results from serious head injury. Partial recovery may occur but is unlikely. Senso

[Sensory and current political weaknesses of prismatic correction with the Polatest].

BACKGROUND: The adherence of the Polatest try to enforce prismatic correction in cases of heterophoria, asthenopia, dyslexia and other kinds of disorders. They claim that some sensorial anomalies exist which can be diagnosed only by the Polatest and for which special terminology is used. The Polatest-Doctrine in microtropias, subnormal binocular vision and obligate fixation disparity leads to excessive amount of prisms and unnecessary eye muscle surgery. METHOD AND CONCLUSION: The reason for this is the erroneous interpretation of the Stereo-test with the two triangles, where it is not possib

Effects of disparity on visual discomfort caused by short-term stereoscopic viewing based on electroencephalograph analysis.

BACKGROUND: Discomfort evoked by stereoscopic depth has been widely concerned. Previous studies have proposed a comfortable disparity range and considered that disparities exceed this range would cause visual discomfort. Brain activity recordings including Electroencephalograph (EEG) monitoring enable better understanding of perceptual and cognitive processes related to stereo depth-induced visual comfort. METHODS: EEG data was collected using a stereo-visual evoked potential (VEP) test system by providing visual stimulus to subjects aged from 21 to 25 with normal stereoscopic vision. For eac

Apparent position in depth of stationary moving three-dimensional objects.

Motion signals contained within a stationary object projected on the fronto-parallel plane shift the object's apparent spatial position in the direction of the motion [see De Valois, R. L., & De Valois, K. K. (1991). Vernier acuity with stationary moving Gabors. Vision Research, 31(9), 1619-1626]. We report an analogous apparent position shift of three-dimensional objects that contain local elements that move in depth. Our stimulus was a transparent three-dimensional cylinder defined by 150 limited-lifetime dots, oriented such that it was end on and its tangent plane was circular. Dots moved i

Reflex maintenance of vergence eye alignment to small natural images is at risk for adults and young children.

PURPOSE: Typical human adults make reflex eye movements and computations to support stable binocular vision in milliseconds. The current project was designed to determine the impact of visual field extent on reflex vergence performance of adults and six- to eight-year-old children for images of natural scenes. METHODS: Twenty-two typical adults (23-55 years) and 12 typical six- to eight-year-old children were presented with dichoptic natural scenes in continuous tracking and step disparity formats while vergence realignment responses were recorded. The images had radii varying from 1° to 16°

Hybrid Computer Vision Model to Predict Lung Cancer in Diverse Populations.

PURPOSE: Disparities in lung cancer incidence exist in Black populations, and screening criteria underserve Black populations due to disparately elevated risk in the screening-eligible population. Prediction models that integrate clinical and imaging-based features to individualize lung cancer risk are a potential means to mitigate these disparities. METHODS: This multicenter (National Lung Screening Trial [NLST]) and catchment population-based (University of Illinois Health [UIH], urban and suburban Cook County) cross-sectional study used participants at risk of lung cancer with available lu

Constraints on human stereo dot matching.

Statistical efficiency was used as a model-free measure of stereo performance to explore how well human observers perform for a range of stereoscopic stimuli with varying amounts of added disparity noise. When the stimulus was a random dot stereogram in which perturbations of disparity were applied independently to each dot, most of the dots had very different disparities from their neighbours and efficiency was found to fall as the level of disparity noise was increased. It was hypothesized that the fall of efficiency was due to difficulty with dot matching, so random-dot stereograms were cre

Unilateral situs inversus of optic disc associated with reduced binocularity and stereoacuity resembling monofixation syndrome.

Situs inversus of the optic disc is a rare, usually bilateral, congenital embryological abnormality associated with high myopia, optic disc coloboma or tilted optic disc. It is characterized by emergence of the retinal vessels in an anomalous direction with dysversion of the optic disc. In this report we present a 13-year-old boy diagnosed with isolated, unilateral situs inversus of the optic disc associated with reduced binocularity and stereoacuity resembling a monofixation syndrome. The clinicians should be aware of this association and assess the binocularity in patients with unilateral op

Compensation procedures for the anisometropic presbyope.

When changing to bifocal lenses from distance anisometropic lenses, presbyopic patients may experience diplopia when attempting to do close work. Prescription failure can be dramatically reduced by utilizing the procedures outlined in this article. Why would a patient experience diplopia when attempting to read with bifocals? The diplopia may simply be a result of the optical difference in power between the two lenses. Anisometropia creates a disparity in the size of the retinal image as well as a prismatic imbalance when looking away from the optical center. A practical approach to coping wit

Diagnostic occlusion and clinical management of latent hyperphoria.

Occasionally in patients who have symptoms suggestive of a vertical heterophoria no deviation is found, even on careful examination. Six days of occlusion have been recommended for uncovering such "latent" vertical deviations. We investigated prolonged monocular occlusion (Part I) and found that vertical deviations of varying amounts manifested on symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects. Thus, results of prolonged occlusion can be difficult to interpret. Nonadaptive vertical vergence systems have been implicated in development of symptoms. Therefore, it may be that diagnostic monocular occlusion

Effect of Visual Attention on Binocular Fusion Limits.

We examined the effect of visual attention on binocular fusion limits by using Posner's spatial cueing paradigm that entails cued shifts of attentional focus. Results showed that attention decreases the fusion limit. Observers perceived diplopia of a binocular line within +/-26.5 arcmin disparity (+/- correspond to uncrossed and crossed, respectively) more frequently when it was oriented to the line than when cued attention was directed elsewhere. We discuss the results in terms of attention increasing spatial resolution and contrast sensitivity.

Human infants can generate vergence responses to retinal disparity by 5 to 10 weeks of age.

Vergence is defined as a binocular eye movement during which the two eyes move in opposite directions to align to a target in depth. In adults, fine vergence control is driven primarily by interocular retinal image disparity. Although infants have not typically been shown to respond to disparity until 3 to 5 months postpartum, they have been shown to align their eyes from hours after birth. It remains unclear what drives these responses in young infants. In this experiment, 5- to 10-week-old human infants were presented with a dynamic random noise stimulus oscillating in disparity at 0.1 Hz ov

Tonic vergence and vergence adaptation.

In the absence of an adequate visual stimulus, the eyes are typically converged by approximately 0.25 to 0.75 meter angles (MA). This vergence response (VR) was believed to reflect the level of tonic innervation to the extraocular muscles, and accordingly has been termed tonic vergence (TV). However, this estimation fails to consider the magnitude of the anatomical position of rest. The true typical value of TV is approximately 23 degrees. This paper will consider various aspects of this parameter, including both clinical and laboratory methods of measurement, and the relationship between TV a

Horror fusionis: a report of five patients.

BACKGROUND: Horror fusionis is an uncommon anomaly and is rarely reported in the literature. METHODS: Five adults with long-standing diplopia associated with horror fusionis were examined. RESULTS: All patients had strabismus since early childhood and had been treated at that time either with surgery, occlusion, and/or orthoptics/vision therapy. Prisms could not eliminate the diplopia. Graded occlusion was attempted with one patient but was not tolerated. Another patient with an asymmetrical dissociated vertical deviation could ignore the second image by fixating with the eye with the smalle

Stereoscopic cooperation between the fovea of one eye and the periphery of the other eye at large disparities. Implications for anomalous retinal correspondence in strabismus.

In normal human observers we searched for the largest amount of visual disparity that can still provide depth information; we compared (1) crossed and uncrossed disparities and (2) symmetrical and asymmetrical locations of disparate stimuli. A pair of 3 degrees discs projected for 100 ms served as targets. Symmetrical stimuli were projected on temporal or nasal retinal loci in both eyes; asymmetrical stimuli were projected on the fovea of one eye and on the nasal or temporal periphery of the other eye. Thresholds were determined using a two-alternative forced choice procedure. Subjects had to
