BACKGROUND: Recent studies indicate that both prefrontal and visual regions play critical roles in visual working memory (VWM), with prefrontal regions mainly associated with executive functions, and visual cortices linked to representations of memory contents. VWM involves the selective filtering of irrelevant information, yet the specific contributions of the prefrontal regions and visual cortex in this process remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To understand the dynamic causal roles of prefrontal and visual regions in VWM.
METHODS: The differentiation of VWM components was achieved using a comput

PURPOSE: Synaptosomal actin dynamics are essential for synaptic structural stability. Whether actin dynamics are involved in structural and functional synaptic plasticity within the primary visual cortex (V1) or behavioral visual acuity in rats has still not been thoroughly investigated.
METHODS: Synaptosome preparation and western blot analysis were used to analyze synaptosomal actin dynamics. Transmission electron microscopy was used to detect synaptic density and mitochondrial area alterations. A visual water maze task was applied to assess behavioral visual acuity. Microinjection of the a

Neurons in cortical ventral-stream area V4 are thought to contribute to important aspects of visual processing by integrating information from primary visual cortex (V1). However, how V4 neurons respond to visual stimulation after V1 injury remains unclear: While electrophysiological investigation of V4 neurons during reversible V1 inactivation suggests that virtually all responses are eliminated (Girard et al., 1991), fMRI in humans and monkeys with permanent lesions shows reliable V1-independent activity (Baseler et al., 1999; Goebel et al., 2001; Schmid et al., 2010). To resolve this appare

MRI at 7 Tesla has been used to investigate the accumulation of manganese in the occipital cortex of common marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus) after administering four fractionated injections of 30 mg/kg MnCl(2) . 4H(2)O in the tail vein. We found a statistically significant decrease in T(1) in the primary (V1) and secondary (V2) areas of the visual cortex caused by an accumulation of manganese. The larger T(1) shortening in V1 (DeltaT(1) = 640 ms) relative to V2 (DeltaT(1) = 490 ms) allowed us to robustly detect the V1/V2 border in vivo using heavily T(1)-weighted MRI. Furthermore, the dor

The abnormal organization of the central visual pathways in the albino ferret has been characterized anatomically and physiologically. Recordings in dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus of the albino ferret show that lamina A1, which receives an aberrant projection from the contralateral eye, contains an extensive representation of the ipsilateral visual hemifield with receptive fields located up to 35 degrees from the vertical meridian. This is not the case in pigmented ferrets, for which the vast majority of units, activated through either the contralateral or ipsilateral eye, have receptive fi

The visually evoked potential (VEP) was recorded from the scalp overlying precentral and occipital cortex in three monocularly deprived humans. The subjects had defects of the globe from birth that effectively created a condition of diffuse light rearing in one eye. In subject, BER, a 19-year-old with a recently removed congenital cataract, the occipital response evoked from the deprived eye was reduced by 53% compared with the response evoked from the good eye. In subject GUZ, age 20 with a congenital cataract, the occipital response evoked from the deprived eye was actually larger by 20% tha

Radiologists acquire expert-level performance in detecting abnormalities in chest X-rays over years of training. Holistic processing has been proposed to support this acquired visual expertise, but its neural implementation remains unclear. Because face perception is a canonical form of holistic/configural processing and reliably engages occipitotemporal regions such as the fusiform face area (FFA) and occipital face area (OFA), a key question is whether these regions also contribute to expertise-related holistic processing in a non-face professional domain. Here, we focused on face-selective

Humans and other primates can robustly report whether they have seen specific images before, even when those images are extremely similar to ones they have previously seen. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that pattern separation computations in the hippocampus (HC) contribute to this behavior by shaping the fidelity of visual memory. However, unclear is whether HC uniquely determines memory fidelity or whether computations in other brain areas also contribute. To investigate, we recorded neural signals from inferotemporal cortex (ITC) and HC of two rhesus monkeys (1 male, 1 female) as they

Attention is a powerful mechanism that dynamically optimizes brain representations to prioritize behaviorally-relevant information. While previous studies focusing on single tasks have demonstrated that attention shifts tuning towards attended targets, real-world behavior often requires humans to switch between tasks with different demands. How does visual semantic tuning in the human brain shift to support the behavioral demands of different naturalistic tasks? To answer this question, we used voxelwise encoding models to compare visual semantic tuning across the human cerebral cortex between

Human visual cortex contains regions selectively involved in perceiving and recognizing ecologically important visual stimuli such as people and places. Located in the ventral temporal lobe, these regions are organized consistently relative to cortical folding, a phenomenon thought to be inherited from how centrally or peripherally these stimuli are viewed with the retina. While this eccentricity theory of visual cortex has been one of the best descriptions of its functional organization, whether or not it accurately describes visual processing in all category-selective regions is not yet clea

A fundamental aspect of visual motion processing is the computation of motion direction. In ferrets, as in primates, selectivity for motion direction is found both in early cortical stages like the primary visual cortex (V1) and in higher visual areas like primate MT and ferret PMLS. Little is known about how this critical tuning function develops in higher visual cortex. Here, by studying the development of the ferret's motion pathway, we first reveal the surprising finding that direction selectivity develops earlier in PMLS than in V1, contrary to the areas' hierarchical positions. Our data

Traditionally, the neural processing of faces and bodies is studied separately, although they are encountered together, as parts of an agent. Despite its social importance, it is poorly understood how faces and bodies interact, particularly at the single-neuron level. Here, we examined the interaction between faces and bodies in the macaque inferior temporal (IT) cortex, targeting an fMRI-defined patch. We recorded responses of neurons to monkey images in which the face was in its natural location (natural face-body configuration), or in which the face was mislocated with respect to the upper

BACKGROUND: Converging lines of evidence point to hippocampal dysfunction in psychosis spectrum disorders, including altered functional connectivity. Evidence also suggests that antipsychotic medications can modulate hippocampal dysfunction. The goal of this project was to identify patterns of hippocampal connectivity predictive of response to antipsychotic treatment in 2 cohorts of patients with a psychosis spectrum disorder, one medication-naïve and the other one unmedicated.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that we would identify reliable patterns of hippocampal connectivity in the 2 cohorts th

Unique stimuli stand out. Despite an abundance of competing sensory stimuli, the detection of the most salient ones occurs without effort, and that detection contributes to the guidance of adaptive behavior. Neurons sensitive to the salience of visual stimuli are widespread throughout the primate visual system and are thought to shape the selection of visual targets. However, a neural source of salience remains elusive. In an attempt to identify a source of visual salience, we reversibly inactivated parietal cortex and simultaneously recorded salience signals in prefrontal cortex. Inactivation

Neurofeedback based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a new approach that allows training of voluntary control over regionally specific brain activity. However, the neural basis of successful neurofeedback learning remains poorly understood. Here, we assessed changes in effective brain connectivity associated with neurofeedback training of visual cortex activity. Using dynamic causal modeling (DCM), we found that training participants to increase visual cortex activity was associated with increased effective connectivity between the visual cortex and the superior par

Recent studies have revealed a surprising degree of functional specialization in rodent visual cortex. Anatomically, suggestions have been made about the existence of hierarchical pathways with similarities to the ventral and dorsal pathways in primates. Here we aimed to characterize some important functional properties in part of the supposed "ventral" pathway in rats. We investigated the functional properties along a progression of five visual areas in awake rats, from primary visual cortex (V1) over lateromedial (LM), latero-intermediate (LI), and laterolateral (LL) areas up to the newly fo

Neurological diseases which constituted traditionally obstacles to artistic creation can, in the case of migraine, be transformed by the artists into a source of inspiration and artistic production. These phenomena represent a chapter of a broader embryonic neurobiology of painting.

Aging often results in reduced visual acuity from changes in both the eye and neural circuits [1-4]. In normally aging subjects, primary visual cortex has been shown to have reduced responses to visual stimulation [5]. It is not known, however, to what extent aging affects visual field representations and population receptive sizes in human primary visual cortex. Here we use functional MRI (fMRI) and population receptive field (pRF) modeling [6] to measure angular and eccentric retinotopic representations and population receptive fields in primary visual cortex in healthy aging subjects ages 5

BACKGROUND: We present a lipidomics analysis of human Parkinson's disease tissues. We have focused on the primary visual cortex, a region that is devoid of pathological changes and Lewy bodies; and two additional regions, the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex which contain Lewy bodies at different disease stages but do not have as severe degeneration as the substantia nigra.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry lipidomics techniques for an initial screen of 200 lipid species, significant changes in 79 sphingolipid, glycerophospholipid and choleste
