[Visual field change and risk factors for progression of visual field damage in low tension glaucoma].

The authors carried out a prospective study in an attempt to determine the possible effect of intraocular pressure (IOP) and some clinical factors on the clinical course of low tension glaucoma (LTG). During the study period all the patients were followed without any antiglaucoma medication. The enrollment criteria for the study were reproducible, mild to moderate field loss as defined as a mean defect (MD) of greater than 2 dB and less than 10 dB or corrected loss variance (CLV) of greater than 7 dB revealed by the Octopus 201, G1 program. Forty-two consecutive patients (56 eyes) who fulfille

[Influence of initial visual field sensitivity on visual field loss progression in open angle glaucoma].

INTRODUCTION: It is important to know the risk factors for visual field defect progression in order to predict the future development of glaucoma. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of visual field initial sensitivity on the rate of visual field progression. METHODS: A minimum of five visual fields were performed using computerized perimetry (Octopus) over a mean followup 4-year period (48.85 +/- 17.84 months) in 64 persons (114 eyes) with primary open angle glaucoma. The rate of change of the whole central visual field and each of the seven regions of the field were measured by linear

Visual contrast sensitivity deficits in 'normal' visual field of patients with homonymous visual field defects due to stroke: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Homonymous visual field defects (VFD) are common following stroke, and often recover, partially or fully, by unknown mechanisms. In clinical practice, visual field recovered on perimetry is often considered perceptually normal. However, studies have shown contrast sensitivity (CS) deficits in patients with stroke and homonymous VFD. This study investigated the origin of visual CS loss in patients with VFD due to stroke. We hypothesised that CS deficits would be found in visual field areas appearing normal on perimetry, in patients with ischaemic stroke affecting the retrochiasmal v

Effects of Static Magnetic Fields on the Visual Cortex: reversible Visual Deficits and Reduction of Neuronal Activity.

Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques have been successfully used to modulate brain activity, have become a highly useful tool in basic and clinical research and, recently, have attracted increased attention due to their putative use as a method for neuro-enhancement. In this scenario, transcranial static magnetic stimulation (SMS) of moderate strength might represent an affordable, simple, and complementary method to other procedures, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or direct current stimulation, but its mechanisms and effects are not thoroughly understood. In this study, we show

[Visual evoked potentials in reversal and motion-onset stimulation of visual fields in patients with retrobulbar neuritis].

In 21 patients with unilateral retrobulbar neuritis the pattern reversal evoked potentials and motion-onset visual potentials were investigated with the aim to find out whether there is some difference in affection of pattern detecting (parvocellular) and motion detecting (magnocellular) visual pathways in this disease. The pattern reversal potentials were found to be abnormal in all 21 patients: they showed either significantly prolonged latencies and reduced amplitudes of the main positive P100 peak or no clear response (in one patient) upon the stimulation of the eye with neuritis. The Shape of Saccade-based Functional Visual Fields (FVFs): A cautionary note.

A Functional Visual Field (FVF) describes an area around the current point of fixation within which some task is done. In visual search, three types of FVF are of interest. The Resolution FVF describes the region within which a specific target can be identified. The Target FVF is a map of the starting point of saccades whose endpoint is a fixation on or near the target of the search, suggesting that the target was found from the previous fixation. If the endpoints of all saccades are normalized to land at one location, the Search FVF is the map of the starting points of all the saccades before

Neural computations in the foveal and peripheral visual fields during active search.

Active vision requires coordinated attentional processing across both foveal and peripheral receptive fields (RFs), yet the underlying neural dynamics and computational mechanisms remain poorly understood. Previous research has predominantly focused on attention in the visual periphery, leaving the role of foveal processing in naturalistic tasks largely unexplored. Here, we recorded neural activity from both foveal and peripheral RFs in areas V4 and IT of monkeys during free-gaze visual search among complex stimuli. We found robust feature-based attentional enhancements in foveal units, challe

Intraoperative monitoring to preserve central visual fields during occipital corticectomy for epilepsy.

Photic driving using a flashing strobe light was recorded via intracranial electrodes in two patients with occipital epilepsy being evaluated for surgery. The same technique was used to monitor the visual cortex intraoperatively. Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were also obtained using the intracranial electrodes in one patient. Preoperative photic driving occurred in a separate location from the cortical areas producing ictal epileptiform activity. VEPs were located in the same site as photic driving. Photic driving was monitored throughout the resection and remained unaffected at the end of

[New method of visual fields color division in diploptic treatment of strabismus].

A new method of color division of the visual fields based on polarized light interference is described. A new method for diploptic therapy of strabismus is developed, based on the above principle and possessing numerous advantages. The method was used in 38 patients with binocular disorders of various severity; binocular function improved in 18. The method is particularly effective in the patients with correct position of the eyes with bifoveal fusion on the synaptophore and parallel color test vision and in the patients with binocular vision and amblyobinopia.
