The basal forebrain provides the primary source of cholinergic input to the cortex, and it has a crucial function in promoting wakefulness and arousal. However, whether rapid changes in basal forebrain neuron spiking in awake animals can dynamically influence sensory perception is unclear. Here we show that basal forebrain cholinergic neurons rapidly regulate cortical activity and visual perception in awake, behaving mice. Optogenetic activation of the cholinergic neurons or their V1 axon terminals improved performance of a visual discrimination task on a trial-by-trial basis. In V1, basal for

We present an approach to learning the kinematic model of a robotic manipulator arm from scratch using self-observation via a single monocular camera. We introduce a flexible model based on Bayesian networks that allows a robot to simultaneously identify its kinematic structure and to learn the geometrical relationships between its body parts as a function of the joint angles. Further, we show how the robot can monitor the prediction quality of its internal kinematic model and how to adapt it when its body changes-for example due to failure, repair, or material fatigue. In experiments carried

How do visual luminance, shape, motion, and depth bind together in the brain to represent the coherent percept of a 3-D object within hundreds of milliseconds (msec)? We provide evidence from simultaneous magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) data that perception of 3-D objects defined by luminance or motion elicits sequential activity in human visual cortices within 500 msec. Following activation of the primary visual cortex around 100 msec, 3-D objects elicited sequential activity with only little overlap (dynamic 3-D shapes: MT-LO-Temp; stationary 3-D shapes: LO-Te

Microsystem technologies offer significant advantages in the development of neural prostheses. In the last two decades, it has become feasible to develop intelligent prostheses that are fully implantable into the human body with respect to functionality, complexity, size, weight, and compactness. Design and development enforce collaboration of various disciplines including physicians, engineers, and scientists. The retina implant system can be taken as one sophisticated example of a prosthesis which bypasses neural defects and enables direct electrical stimulation of nerve cells. This micro im

Previous studies on visual form agnosic patients have shown that their color perception is relatively preserved when monochromatic figures are used. However, it is unclear whether their color perception remains normal when figures are composed of two parts in different colors. The results showed that patient X.F. had difficulty in naming both colors when the two colors were placed next to each other, and in discriminating the two-color figure from the figure presented in its larger color. In contrast, X.F. could name the two colors when they were physically separated. These data suggest that X

A large body of data suggests that phonological deficits play an important causal role in dyslexics' reading difficulties. The functional role of visual impairments is still highly debated. Many recent studies have shown clear visual deficits in large subgroups of dyslexics. However, the relationship between these deficits and visual routines required for reading is not clear. To assess the direct contribution of visual factors to dyslexics' slower and less accurate reading, we composed a task that was similar to single word reading in its basic visual characteristics, but had none of the othe

Most glaucoma patients are unaware of their visual problem until a late stage of the disease, probably because their visual field defects are being filled-in by the brain. According to new insights into how our brain works, plasticity of the visual cortex allows the brain to reorganize after damage to the retina or the visual pathways. This plasticity involves activation of existing but normally ineffective synapses, in a highly organized system of long-range horizontal connections in the visual cortex. Normal cells in the cortex surrounding the lesion thus take control of the deprived ones. A

BACKGROUND/AIMS: There is a paucity of useful information on the level of visual disability suffered by glaucoma patients. The aims of this study were to determine and rank the frequency of self reported visual disability in daily tasks performed by glaucoma patients; to examine the interrelation between disabilities using factor analysis; to study the relation between perceived visual difficulty and a measure of the severity of visual field loss; to develop a glaucoma specific subgroup of questions; and examine the validity and reliability of this subgroup of questions.
METHODS: 63 glaucoma

To determine visual areas of the human brain involved in elementary form processing, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to measure regional responses to two types of achromatic textures. Healthy young adults were presented with 'random' textures which lacked spatial organization of the black and white pixels that make up the image, and 'correlated' textures in which the pixels were ordered to produce extended contours and rectangular blocks at multiple spatial scales. Relative to a fixation condition, random texture stimulation resulted in increased signal intensity primaril

Perception of extrafoveal visual targets can be suppressed by magnetic stimulation over the occipital lobes, but the site of interference for this and similar phenomena has not been well defined. We modified a previously used technique to determine the locus of magnetic activation. Using butterfly stimulus coils of different sizes and electric field profiles, we determined a scalp position of minimum threshold and a level of stimulator output that produced 50% error rates for each coil. Intersection of the corresponding electric field profiles in air and in a saline model head was similar and

The authors postulated that older adult fallers show a greater tendency than older adult nonfallers to rely more on visual information sources in maintaining upright posture than on kinesthetic and vestibular cues. This paper presents descriptive statistics on 199 older adults living independently in the community. Their visual perception of the vertical and horizontal was analyzed with respect to age, sex, health status, and severity of injury as a result of a fall. The finding of significant impairments for fallers in visual perceptual abilities confirmed a trend previously established by on

For decades, visual perception was treated as a linear, feature-extracting mechanism driven almost exclusively by bottom-up sensory inputs. Emerging insights from affective neuroscience and cognitive psychology have systematically dismantled this view, revealing that vision operates within a continuous, bidirectional dialog with emotional systems. This review synthesizes the multi-layered neurobiological architectures underpinning this relationship. The pathways through which top-down emotional states recalibrate sensory processing are analyzed. Mechanisms including amygdalocortical feedback,

Environmental perception is a crucial foundation for enhancing the application potential of biomimetic robots. Motivated by the complementary roles of visual and tactile sensing observed in rats, this work proposes a visual-tactile perception for a small-scale bio-inspired robotic rat. The method leverages binocular vision to estimate depth images through an attention-based network and improve perception and localization accuracy by 14.22% based on a dynamic objects removal module. Besides, the whisker sensor is applied to enhance the robot's ability to identify object contours and environment

Motion perception relies on predictive mechanisms to facilitate optimal interaction with moving objects by integrating prior knowledge about motion dynamics and perceptual input. Evidence of these predictive processes can be found in the Representational Momentum (RM) effect, in which the perceived position of a moving object is displaced forward in the direction of motion. This is an ideal framework to assess whether modulations of event-related potentials (ERPs) observed for task-related "contextual" priors extend to deeply ingrained "structural" priors, acquired by experience or connected t

BACKGROUND: Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) presenting with no light perception (NLP) is uncommon and its visual prognosis is uncertain. We described visual outcomes after orbital decompression and explored factors associated with postoperative improvement.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 20 TAO patients with NLP in at least one eye treated between May 2017 and May 2025. Orbital decompression was performed when feasible, with postoperative intravenous methylprednisolone; otherwise, intravenous methylprednisolone pulse therapy (IVMP) only was given. The primary outcom

When viewing the environment, humans execute fast sequential saccadic eye movements that disrupt the flow of visual information, yet still preserve stability in their visual percept. At the time of the saccade subjects often experience saccadic suppression of displacement-a failure to notice changes in the location of visual objects slightly shifted during the eye movement. Although well studied, the weighing of sensory information and the extent to which this integration influences visual perceptual judgments is still poorly characterized and understood. Here we used a drift diffusion modelin

Serial dependence, the tendency for recent perceptual history to bias current judgments, has been proposed as a mechanism supporting perceptual stability, although its cognitive origin remains debated. We investigated serial dependence in motion direction estimation using random-dot kinematograms (RDKs). Participants reported perceived motion direction after delays of 0, 1, 3, or 6 s following stimulus offset. Trial-level linear mixed-effects modelling revealed a significant serial dependence effect and a significant interaction with delay, indicating that the magnitude of the DoG-based histor
