The plasma vitellogenin of Bothrops jararaca is composed of two subunits. The larger subunit (160 kDa) is phosphate rich and carbohydrate poor, while the smaller (110 kDa) is highly glycosylated and less phosphorylated. As in other vertebrates, the vitellogenin of B. jararaca is synthesized in the liver under estrogen control. The newly synthesized vitellogenin molecule is a 270 kDa polypeptide. This polypeptide originates the two subunits of the plasma vitellogenin by proteolytic cleavage. Three cases are described of an unusual malformation of the ileum at the site of the vitelline duct, which presented with chronic anaemia. In each case localized mega-ileum was associated with a simple, non-specific ulcer leading to chronic blood loss. Gastroschisis is a significant birth defect that in many countries has shown an increased prevalence in recent decades, and the change has affected primarily younger mothers. BACKGROUND: Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a major human congenital heart defect that results in single ventricle physiology and high mortality. Clinical data indicate that intracardiac blood flow patterns during cardiac morphogenesis are a significant etiology. We have previously described the major yolk protein, vitellin, in the British blackfly Simulium ornatum Meigen. Here we demonstrate that vitellogenin, synthesized in the fat body and secreted into the haemolymph, is composed of subunits with the same approximate molecular weight as vitellin, namely 200 and 68 kDa.
