The role of linguistic and cognitive factors in emotion recognition difficulties in children with ASD, ADHD or DLD.

BACKGROUND: Many children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or developmental language disorder (DLD) have difficulty recognizing and understanding emotions. However, the reasons for these difficulties are currently not well understood. AIMS: To compare the emotion recognition skills of children with neurodevelopmental disorders as well as those children's skills with the skills of their typically developing (TD) age peers. Also, to identify the role of underlying factors in predicting emotion recognition s

More than just two sexes: the neural correlates of voice gender perception in gender dysphoria.

Gender dysphoria (also known as "transsexualism") is characterized as a discrepancy between anatomical sex and gender identity. Research points towards neurobiological influences. Due to the sexually dimorphic characteristics of the human voice, voice gender perception provides a biologically relevant function, e.g. in the context of mating selection. There is evidence for a better recognition of voices of the opposite sex and a differentiation of the sexes in its underlying functional cerebral correlates, namely the prefrontal and middle temporal areas. This fMRI study investigated the neural

Not all patients labeled as "prosopagnosia" have a real prosopagnosia.

Since face recognition is the most powerful source of information for identifying familiar people, patients showing a multimodal defect in people recognition have been sometimes considered as affected by "prosopagnosia"-namely, by a form of visual agnosia, specifically affecting face recognition. In this note we report two anatomoclinical observations and a neuroanatomical study in which an inappropriate use of the term "prosopagnosia" was made, because the person recognition defect was not confined to the visual (face) modality, but also concerned voice and/or name of the target person. The d

Managing voice impairment after injection laryngoplasty.

To date, there is a paucity of literature on the management of suboptimal voice outcomes after injection laryngoplasty. We present three cases of worsened voice quality and impaired mucosal waveform propagation on videostroboscopy after calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) injection. The first was found to have superficial deposits of CaHA in Reinke's space. The second case appeared to have overaugmentation of the vocal folds. The third case had atrophic vocal folds, and despite having a deep CaHA injection (within the thyroarytenoid muscles), the injected vocal folds had diminished mucosal waveform

Speech Recognition With Informational and Energetic Maskers in Patients With Single-Sided Deafness After Cochlear Implantation.

Purpose The aim of the study was to assess the susceptibility to energetic and informational masking in patients with single-sided deafness (SSD) with one normal-hearing (NH) ear and a cochlear implant (CI) in the contralateral ear, understand the effect on speech recognition when spatially separating noise and speech maskers, and investigate the influence of the CI in situations with energetic and informational masking. Method Speech recognition was measured in the presence of either a modulated speech-shaped noise or one of two competing speech maskers in 11 SSD-CI listeners. The speech mask

Development of a machine-learning based voice disorder screening tool.

OBJECTIVE: Early recognition and referral are crucial for voice disorder management. Limited availability of subspecialists, poor primary care awareness, and the need for specialized equipment impede effective care. Thus, there is a need for a tool to improve voice pathology screening. Machine learning algorithms (MLAs) have shown promise in analyzing acoustic characteristics of phonation. However, few studies report clinical applications of MLAs for voice pathology detection. The objective of this study was to design and validate a MLA for detecting pathological voices. METHODS: A MLA was de

Reattribution of Auditory Hallucinations Throughout Avatar Therapy: A Case Series.

Background and Clinical Significance: Avatar Therapy (AT) for individuals with treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in schizophrenia aims to address emotional responses, beliefs about voices, self-perception, and coping strategies. This study focuses on three participants who, during AT, shifted their belief about the origin of their most distressing voice from an external source to a self-generated one. Case Presentation: The objective of this study was to explore the evolution of the reattribution of the participants' most distressing voice to oneself during AT and the p

A study of voice and non-voice processing in Prader-Willi syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare and complex neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origin. It manifests itself in endocrine and cognitive problems, including highly pronounced hyperphagia and severe obesity. In many cases, impaired acquisition of social and communication skills leads to autism spectrum features, and individuals with this syndrome are occasionally diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) using specific scales. Given that communicational skills are largely based on vocal communication, it is important to study human voice processing in PWS. We were able to

Training a Neural Network for Vocal Stereotypy Detection.

This system was developed to detect and diagnose vocal stereotypies made by non-verbal autistic children. Vocal stereotypies are loud non-speech vocalizations made by these children. The system discussed in this paper uses a deep learning neural network to detect these vocalizations. Using similar data from other recorded human voices, the system can be trained to detect the non-speech vocalizations of autistic children. By detecting vocalizations the proposed system can be used to recognize the stimming of non-verbal autistic children from the background noise.

Fast Periodic Auditory Stimulation Reveals a Robust Categorical Response to Voices in the Human Brain.

Voices are arguably among the most relevant sounds in humans' everyday life, and several studies have suggested the existence of voice-selective regions in the human brain. Despite two decades of research, defining the human brain regions supporting voice recognition remains challenging. Moreover, whether neural selectivity to voices is merely driven by acoustic properties specific to human voices (e.g., spectrogram, harmonicity), or whether it also reflects a higher-level categorization response is still under debate. Here, we objectively measured rapid automatic categorization responses to h

Voice disorders in children.

Pediatric patients with voice or speech problems usually should receive a team assessment in which communication between the pediatrician or primary care physician, the otolaryngologist, and speech pathologist occurs. Although speech or voice problems may prompt an otolaryngologic evaluation, the voice or speech problem simply may be the manifestation or symptom of a larger or more complex disease process. Whether that is the case of hypernasal speech, eventually leading to the diagnosis of velocardiofacial syndrome, or bilateral vocal fold paralysis, eventually leading to the diagnosis of hyd

African American English speakers' pitch variation and rate adjustments for imagined technological and human addressees.

This paper examines the adaptations African American English speakers make when imagining talking to a voice assistant, compared to a close friend/family member and to a stranger. Results show that speakers slowed their rate and produced less pitch variation in voice-assistant-"directed speech" (DS), relative to human-DS. These adjustments were not mediated by how often participants reported experiencing errors with automatic speech recognition. Overall, this paper addresses a limitation in the types of language varieties explored when examining technology-DS registers and contributes to our u

"Hearing faces and seeing voices": Amodal coding of person identity in the human brain.

Recognizing familiar individuals is achieved by the brain by combining cues from several sensory modalities, including the face of a person and her voice. Here we used functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) and a whole-brain, searchlight multi-voxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to search for areas in which local fMRI patterns could result in identity classification as a function of sensory modality. We found several areas supporting face or voice stimulus classification based on fMRI responses, consistent with previous reports; the classification maps overlapped across modalities in a single area of

Deep learning applications in telerehabilitation speech therapy scenarios.

Nowadays, many application scenarios benefit from automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology. Within the field of speech therapy, in some cases ASR is exploited in the treatment of dysarthria with the aim of supporting articulation output. However, in presence of atypical speech, standard ASR approaches do not provide any reliable result in terms of voice recognition due to main issues, including: (i) the extreme intra and inter-speakers variability of the speech in presence of speech impairments, such as dysarthria; (ii) the absence of dedicated corpora containing voice samples from users
