Correcting low-frequency phase distortion in electroglottograph waveforms.

Dynamic high-pass filtering with a -3 dB frequency that is a factor of ten or more below the voice fundamental frequency has a negligible effect on the amplitudes of the Fourier components of an EGG waveform. However, such a filter can significantly distort the waveform due to distortion in the phase or time alignment of these Fourier components. Such high-pass filtering can be introduced purposefully to stabilize the waveform by attenuating low-frequency noise, or may be an undesired effect of using an amplification or data acquisition system designed for acoustic signals. For a given voice f

[Phoniatric aspects of reconstructive laryngectomy].

Reconstructive laryngectomy has been performed at the E.N.T. Clinic in Ferrara for some time. After surgery the patients undergo speech therapy and phoniatric treatment for a period of time varying from 2 to 6 months. In order to better evaluate the vocal quality obtained after such reeducation the vocal emissions of 25 patients were examined and recorded. The recorded material, made up of prolonged vowels and 6 phonetically balanced sentences, was then evaluated by a panel of 7 "trained" listeners. The evaluation score-card proposed by Woiers in 1977 was used in taking the data. This not only

[Voice therapy according to Smith. Comments on the accent method of treating voice and speech disorders].

The accent method (A.M.) is based on the myoelastic and aerodynamic phonatory theory. The aim of the respiration exercises is to establish a predominantly abdominal respiration. Following the exercises of accentuated phonatory pulsations, patients work on reading special texts designed to enable them to become aware of the accentuated or unaccentuated sections. The AM is based on a holistic understanding of the voice and of speech. Whilst the exercise of AM is linked to a physiological phenomenon, such as phonatory aerodynamics and muscular function, the method is to be understood as a therapy

Spasmodic dysphonia: abductor type. A clinical report of acoustic, aerodynamic and perceptual characteristics.

Two case studies of spasmodic dysphonia (abductor type) are presented with acoustic and aerodynamic documentation. The abductor type is characterized clinically as exhibiting intermittent moderate to severe breathiness accompanied by sudden drops in pitch. These phenomena are interpreted as intermittent abductor vocal fold spasms. Complete case histories including voice therapy and their results are presented.

Predictive assessment of vocal efficiency (PAVE). A method for voice therapy outcome measurement.

A prospective study was carried out to examine the degree to which a standard voice assessment could discriminate between the potential benefits of two different voice therapy programmes for individual patients. The study encompassed 200 dysphonia subjects who were referred for voice therapy and had completed treatment within a prescribed two-year period. A standard assessment procedure was carried out on first attendance for each patient and guidelines were used to assign patients to different treatment programmes on the basis of the assessment results. The assessment discriminated well betwe

Regulation of laryngeal resistance and maximum power transfer with semi-occluded airway vocalization.

Steady airflow resistances in semi-occluded airways as well as acoustic impedances in vocalization are quantified from the lungs to the lips. For clinical and voice training applications, the primary focus is on two airway conditions, an oral semi-occlusion and a semi-occlusion above the vocal folds. Laryngeal airflow resistance is divided into glottal airflow resistance and epilaryngeal airway resistance. Maximum aerodynamic power is transferred to the vocal tract if the glottal airflow resistance is reduced while the epilaryngeal airway resistance is increased. A semi-occlusion at the lips h
