BACKGROUND: Pulmonary involvement is the leading cause of systemic sclerosis (SSc)-related deaths. A simple test to evaluate exercise capacity is the 6-min walk test (6MWT), and the walk distance is used as a primary outcome in clinical trials. Hemoglobin desaturation during a 6MWT is predictive of mortality in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension. Our objectives were to evaluate the walk distance and resting oxygen saturation - oxygen saturation after the 6-min period (DeltaSat) during the 6MWT in patients with SSc, and to establish correlations between the 6MWT results and other clin

OBJECTIVES: To determine the correlates of the total 6-min walk distance (6MWD) in a population sample of adults > or = 68 years old.
METHODS: The standardized 6-min walk test (6MWT) was administered to the Cardiovascular Health Study cohort during their seventh annual examination.
RESULTS: Of the 3,333 participants with a clinic visit, 2,281 subjects (68%) performed the 6MWT. There were no untoward events. The mean 6MWD was 344 m (SD, 88 m). Independent general correlates of a shorter 6MWD in linear regression models in women and men included the following: older age, higher weight, larger

Few reliable tests are available for screening people rapidly for vestibular disorders although such tests would be useful for a variety of testing situations. Balance testing is widely performed but of unknown value for screening. The goal of this study was to determine the value of tests of walking balance for screening people with vestibular impairments. We tested three groups of patients with known vestibular impairments: benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, unilateral vestibular weakness, and post-acoustic neuroma resection. We compared them to normal subjects. All subjects were independ

BACKGROUND: The Figure-of-8 Walk Test (F8W) involves straight and curved paths and was designed to represent walking skill in everyday life.
OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to validate the measure in older adults with walking difficulties and to explore correlates of the curved-path walking measure not represented by a straight-path walking measure.
DESIGN: Fifty-one community-dwelling older adults with mobility disability participated in 2 baseline visits as part of an intervention study.
METHODS: The F8W time, steps, and smoothness and measures of gait (gait speed, modified Gai

Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is an adult-onset motor neuron disease caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the androgen receptor gene. Because the progression of SBMA is slow, it is plausible to identify biomarkers that monitor disease course for therapeutic development. To verify whether the 6-min walk test (6MWT) is a biomarker of SBMA, we performed the 6MWT in 35 genetically confirmed patients and in 29 age-matched healthy controls. The walk distance covered within 6 min (6MWD) was significantly less in SBMA than it was in controls (323.3 +/- 143.9 m and 637.6 +/- 94.2 m, respecti

BACKGROUND: Field exercise tests are a feasible alternative to the symptom-limited exercise test for measuring exercise capacity in patients attending cardiac rehabilitation.
AIMS: To evaluate the criterion validity of the 10 m incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) as a useful tool for measurement of exercise capacity for patients eligible for cardiac rehabilitation.
METHODS: Fifteen patients eligible for cardiac rehabilitation completed a treadmill symptom-limited exercise test and two ISWTs with the order of testing randomised. Associations between the symptom-limited exercise test and the

Heart rate recovery (HRR) after maximal load exercise affects mortality in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, the associations of clinical characteristics with HRR after the 6-min walk test (6MWT), which is defined as a submaximal load test, remain unclear. We showed that HRR in patients with COPD after 6MWT was related to 6-min walk distance and percutaneous oxygen saturation recovery. HRR after the 6MWT may be useful to assess exercise capacity in COPD.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study is to provide clinical examination methods that were designed specifically to assess the level of severity among children with idiopathic toe walking (ITW). The idiopathic toe-walking pattern of 836 children was recorded and analyzed during 4 years. Questionnaires and clinical measurements were evaluated, along with differential tests, assessing the occurrence and severity of toe walking. Questions about family history and onset of toe walking were evaluated along with special tests and measurements assessing the occurrence and severity of toe walking. The dif

OBJECTIVE: To compare walking dynamics and test-retest reliability for 2 frequently applied walk tests in polio survivors: the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) to walk as far as possible; and the 6-minute walking energy cost test (WECT) at comfortable speed.
DESIGN: Observational study.
PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-three polio survivors, able to walk ≥ 150 m.
METHODS: On the same day participants performed a 6MWT and a WECT, which were repeated 1-3 weeks later. For each test, distance walked, heart rate and reduction in speed were assessed.
RESULTS: The mean distance walked and mean heart rate were signi

Hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) is an under-recognised complication of chronic liver disease, affecting 10%-30% of patients with cirrhosis. It involves intrapulmonary vascular dilatations, arterial hypoxaemia and an elevated alveolar-arterial gradient, causing impaired functional status and increased peri-transplant morbidity. Early recognition is crucial for timely liver transplantation referral. We report a woman in her mid-50s with alcohol-related liver disease admitted for a urinary tract infection, in whom severe exertional hypoxaemia was incidentally revealed. She developed positional dysp

INTRODUCTION: Sarcoidosis associated pulmonary hypertension (SAPH) is a leading contributor to sarcoidosis-related mortality. The 6-min walk test (6MWT) is widely used in assessment of cardiorespiratory conditions. A reduced 6-min walk distance (6MWD) has been associated with increased mortality in SAPH. We examined patients from the Registry of Sarcoidosis Associated Pulmonary Hypertension (ReSAPH) who had performed 6MWT at enrollment to identify variables that affect 6MWD, and the prognostic value of 6MWT variables regarding death or lung transplantation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: ReSAPH patien

OBJECTIVE: While the 6-minute walk test is increasingly being used in research to evaluate submaximal exercise capacity of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), psychometric properties with this population have not been well evaluated. We undertook this study to evaluate reproducibility (agreement and test-retest reliability) and to determine standard error of measurement (SEM) and smallest detectable difference (SDD) in children and youth with JIA.
METHODS: Participants (n = 22, mean ± SD age 13.1 ± 1.1 years, 63.6% female) completed a 6-minute walk test as part of their routine

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We investigated the repeatability and validity of the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT) distance compared to peak oxygen uptake (VO2pk ) during maximal incremental cycle ergometer (ICE) and treadmill (ITM) tests in adults with severe asthma.
METHODS: Adults with severe asthma, Medical Research Council (MRC) dyspnoea ≥2, were recruited from specialists caring for patients with severe asthma. All participants performed three ISWT (familiarization and two subsequent tests on the same day), an ICE and an ITM in a randomized order, on separate days, to intolerance with

The six-minute walk test (6MWT) has been widely used as an objective evaluation of functional exercise capacity and response to medical intervention in cardiopulmonary diseases. However, little is known about the 6MWT in evaluating patients with AL amyloidosis. We performed a retrospective study of 120 adults with systemic AL amyloidosis (60 with cardiac involvement and 60 without cardiac involvement) who had their initial evaluation at the Amyloidosis Center between 2013 and 2015 and had undergone 6MWT as a measure of functional exercise capacity. Forty-seven patients with cardiac involvement

Pulmonary involvement in Behçet's disease (BD) is uncommon; however, it is potentially fatal due to the risk of massive haemoptysis. We describe the case of a 36-year-old male presenting with a 2-month history of worsening dyspnoea, weight loss, haemoptysis, oral ulceration, erythema nodosum and superficial thrombophlebitis. He was diagnosed with pulmonary vasculitis secondary to BD; however, his symptoms were refractory to initial treatment with cyclophosphamide, azathioprine and prednisolone. We therefore trialled infliximab alongside methotrexate, which led to a remarkable improvement in hi

BACKGROUND: The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is one of the most commonly-used assessments of functional capacity. However, its length and space requirements can limit feasibility in busy clinical settings. There is limited evidence on the validity of shorter or alternative functional tests compared to the 6MWT in individuals with obesity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the concurrent validity of the distance covered during the first two minutes of the 6-minute walk test (2'6MWT), the 2-minute step test (2MST) and the 1-minute sit-to-stand test (1STST) against the full 6MWT in individua

Diastolic stress echocardiography is useful in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (EF); however, its utility in asymptomatic patients with aortic stenosis (AS) remains unexplored. We investigated the value of diastolic stress echocardiography using a 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) in elderly AS patients. This retrospective observational study included 96 consecutive asymptomatic patients (82 years, 39.6% male) with at least moderate AS (mean pressure gradient (MPG) ≥ 20 mm Hg or aortic valve area < 1.5 cm2) and preserved left ventricular EF. All underwent diastolic stress
