INTRODUCTION: Demoralization syndrome, characterized by distress and subjective incompetence, is prevalent among cancer survivors and particularly salient among breast cancer survivors (BCS). Collective trauma may exacerbate existential vulnerability and heighten demoralization syndrome. However, no study has compared demoralization syndrome among BCS and non-BCS women exposed to the same war-related context, nor examined age as a moderator of this relationship. Therefore, this study aimed to: (a) compare levels and clinically significant prevalence of demoralization syndrome between BCS and n

INTRODUCTION: The physical and psychological effects of war are not always easy to detect, but they can be far-reaching and long-lasting. One of the physical effects that may result from war stress is temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of TMD sign and symptoms among war veterans diagnosed with PTSD.
METHODS: We systematically searched in Web of Science, PubMed and Lilacs for articles published from the inception until 30 December 2022. All documents were assessed for eligibility based on the following Population, Exposure, Comparator and Outcomes (PECO) m

BACKGROUND: The October 7th, 2023, terrorist attacks and subsequent war in Israel constituted an unprecedented assault on the civilian population, resulting in widespread trauma, a collapse of physical and psychological safety, and civilians' perceptions that the government's actions did not prioritize their safety and interests. This study investigates how the disruption of world assumptions, experiences of institutional betrayal, and childhood maltreatment (CM) contributed to multilevel stress outcomes, affecting Israeli civilians' perceptions of their mind, body, and relationships.

Exposure to war is associated with poor psychosocial outcomes. Yet the effects of different types of war events on various psychosocial outcomes such as conduct problems remain unknown. This study aims to assess whether various war events differ in predicting conduct problems. Using data from an on-going longitudinal research project, the WAYS study, the current article examined the relationship between specific war events and conduct problems in war-affected youth in Northern Uganda (N=539, baseline age=22.39; SD=2.03, range 18-25). Regression analyses were conducted to relate each type of wa

PURPOSE: Understanding the effects of war on mental disorders is important for developing effective post-conflict recovery policies and programs. The current study uses cross-sectional, retrospectively reported data collected as part of the World Mental Health (WMH) Survey Initiative to examine the associations of being a civilian in a war zone/region of terror in World War II with a range of DSM-IV mental disorders.
METHODS: Adults (n = 3370) who lived in countries directly involved in World War II in Europe and Japan were administered structured diagnostic interviews of lifetime DSM-IV ment

Gulf War Illness is a chronic multi-symptom disorder experienced by over 30% of veterans from the 1990-1991 Gulf War and is increasingly recognized to be driven by underlying persistent neuroinflammation resulting from chemical and physiological exposures experienced during deployment. Despite significant advances in identifying Gulf War-relevant exposures and underlying pathobiology, effective treatment strategies for Gulf War Illness are still largely lacking. Many studies that have evaluated potential therapies for Gulf War Illness have primarily focused on a single treatment. However, thro

Noticing medical symptoms can cause one to search for explanatory labels such as "ate bad food" or even "exposed to anthrax," and perhaps these labels may cause new symptom reports. The present study examined whether there is empirical support for this symptom-label "symmetry rule." We interviewed veterans (N= 362) from the Gulf War Registry in 1995 and 2002 about their medical symptoms and about their exposure to war-related hazards and stressors. Health symptom reports were strongly correlated between the two time periods and showed relatively stable mean levels, whereas recall of war-relate

Findings indicate that war-zone exposure has negative implications for the postdeployment adjustment of veterans; however, most studies have relied on limited conceptualizations of war-zone exposure and focused on male samples. In this study, an array of deployment stressors that were content valid for both female and male Gulf War I military personnel was examined to elucidate gender differences in war-zone exposure and identify gender-based differential associations between stressors and mental health outcomes. While women and men were exposed to both mission-related and interpersonal stress

Early motherhood is a sensitive period marked by increased psychological vulnerability, potentially impacting child developmental trajectories. While childhood adversity and war-related trauma are known as risk factors for psychopathology, little is known about their combined impact on posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) during the first 2 years of motherhood. Grounded in stress sensitisation, this two-wave study examined how childhood adverse experiences (ACEs) and childhood war-related insecurity moderate the prospective association between contemporary cumulative war exposure and maternal

The adverse impact of exposure to war-related traumatic events on mental health is well documented. Few studies, however, have focused on the impact of exposure to war-related traumatic events on HIV sexual risk behavior in post-conflict countries such as Liberia. We investigated whether exposure to war-related traumatic events was linked to HIV sexual risk behavior, and identified potential mediators of this relationship, including stressful life events, problematic alcohol use, and intimate partner violence (IPV) among women and men in Liberia. Data were collected from a sample of 395 partic

BACKGROUND: Various symptoms in military personnel in the Persian Gulf War 1990-91 have caused international speculation and concern. We investigated UK servicemen.
METHODS: We did a cross-sectional postal survey on a random sample of Gulf War veterans (Gulf War cohort, n=4248) and, stratified for age and rank, servicemen deployed to the Bosnia conflict (Bosnia cohort, n=4250) and those serving during the Gulf War but not deployed there (Era cohort, n=4246). We asked about deployment, exposures, symptoms, and illnesses. We analysed men only. Our outcome measures were physical health, function

Chromosome aberrations and sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) were determined in standard peripheral lymphocyte metaphase preparations of 13 British Gulf War veterans, two veterans of the recent war in the Balkans and one veteran of both wars. All 16 volunteers suspect exposures to depleted uranium (DU) while deployed at the two different theatres of war in 1990 and later on. The Bremen laboratory control served as a reference in this study. Compared with this control there was a statistically significant increase in the frequency of dicentric chromosomes (dic) and centric ring chromosomes (cR)

War is a tragic event and its mental health consequences can be profound. Recent studies indicate substantial rates of posttraumatic stress disorder and other behavioral alterations because of war exposure. Understanding the psychological, behavioral, and neurobiological mechanism of mental health and behavioral changes related to war exposure is critical to helping those in need of care. Substantial work to encourage bench to bedside to community knowledge and communication is a core component of addressing this world health need.

We tested a conceptual model of the effect of war-trauma exposure in childhood on psychological distress in young adulthood. Participants included 151 urban Kuwaiti children (51% female; M age = 10.62 years) exposed to the 1990-1991 Gulf crisis (assessed in 1993); participants also included 140 parents (81% female; M age mothers = 36.50 years; M age fathers = 41 years). In 2003, 120 participants were reassessed as young adults (50% female; M age = 21.19 years). The conceptual model was evaluated with structural equations. War-trauma exposure was associated with psychological distress in childr

To assess levels of acute stress symptoms (ASS) and prevalence of acute stress disorder (ASD) in an Israeli civilian sample and examine sociodemographic and war exposure predictors of ASS and ASD. A telephone survey was conducted in the fourth week of the 7 October war with a random sample of 199 Jewish and 194 Arab adult residents from areas of lower Galilee and Acre, Herzliya, and Eilat. ASS and ASD were measured by the Acute Stress Disorder Interview. War exposure and sociodemographic data were collected. 60% of participants met the criteria for ASD. Levels of ASS were relatively high. 21%

Pulmonary complications due to mustard gas exposure range from no effect to severe bronchial stenosis. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) and respiratory symptoms in chemical war victims were studied 23-25 years after exposure to sulfur mustard (SM). Respiratory symptoms were evaluated in a sample of 142 chemical war victims and 120 control subjects with similar age from the general population using a questionnaire including questions on respiratory symptoms in the past year. PFT values were also measured in chemical war victims before and 15 min after the inhalation of 200 µg salbutamol and base

OBJECTIVE: According to most studies, more than half of children exposed to war meet criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although we know that children are adversely affected by atrocities of war, we do not know which specific war events are associated with children's stress reactions. For example, it is unclear whether differences exist in response to violent versus nonviolent war-trauma experiences. This study examined the relationship of violent and nonviolent war experiences to children's trauma reactions and adjustment in a group of children from Bosnia.

War-related trauma has detrimental effects on millions of individuals worldwide, including infants, toddlers, and their parents. Among various adverse outcomes, this trauma may significantly disrupt the essential sense of security crucial for fostering a healthy early parent-child relationship. Yet, research on the effects of war-related trauma on parent-child relationships remains limited. This study aimed to bridge this gap by synthesizing evidence from empirical studies focused on war-related trauma and early parent-child relationship outcomes from 0 to 3 years. Studies were identified by s

Emerging research emphasizes early-life war exposure as a key determinant of later-life health in older adults from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet, the linkages between war exposure, social networks, and later-life health behaviors have received little attention. Using data from the 2018 Vietnam Health and Aging Study, we investigate how early-life war experiences relate to the social networks and health behaviors of 1195 Vietnamese men aged 60+ who survived the Vietnam War (1965-1975). We utilize latent class analysis to identify men's network types and examine the associations
