Iron oxyhydroxide catalyzes production of artificial humic substances from waste biomass.

Production of artificial humic substances (AHS) from waste biomass will contribute to environmental protection and agricultural productivity. However, there is still a lack of a faster, more efficient and eco-friendly way for sustainable production. In this study, we proposed a method to accelerate the production of AHS from cotton stalks by mild pyrolysis and H2O2 oxidation in only 4 hours, and investigated the formation of AHS during biomass transformation. We found that the process increased the aromatic matrix and facilitated biomass transformation by enhancing the depolymerization of lign

Industrial-Scale Technology for Molybdic Acid Production from Waste Petrochemical Catalysts.

The article describes the technology of molybdic acid recovery from spent petrochemical catalysts (HDS) developed and implemented in industrial activity. HDS catalysts contain molybdenum in the form of MoO3 and are used for the hydrodesulfurization of petroleum products. After deactivation, due to the impurities content in the form of sulfur, carbon and heavy metals, they constitute hazardous waste and, at the same time, a valuable source of the Mo element, recognized as a critical raw material. The presented technology allows the recovery of molybdic acid with a yield of min. 81%, and the pro

Catalytic fast pyrolysis of waste mixed cloth for the production of value-added chemicals.

In the present study, catalytic fast pyrolysis of waste mixed cloth in an ex-situ method using hierarchical HZSM and commercial CaO was investigated. Pyrolysis of waste mixed cloth in a temperature range of 450 °C to 750 °C mainly allowed for the formation of levoglucosan without any catalysts. The utilization of HZSM with Brønsted/Lewis acid sites on micro- and mesoporous structures significantly contributed to monocyclic/dicyclic chemicals production, mainly referring to monoaromatics and naphthalene-based derivatives, especially in the case of high heating rates and catalyst usages. Further

Microalgal culture in animal cell waste medium for sustainable 'cultured food' production.

'Cultured food' has tremendous potential as a sustainable meat alternative. Increased cultured food production is increasing the amount of waste medium from cell culture. Nitrogen- and phosphorus-containing compounds in waste medium can cause eutrophication of water bodies. Currently, microalgae are used in energy production, environmental protection, agriculture and pharmaceutical and health food industries. Here, we used the microalgae, Chlorococcum littorale and Chlorella vulgaris and the waste medium of C2C12 cells for a case study. We found that 80% and 26% of ammonia and 16% and 15% of p

From waste to clean Energy: Green synthesis of hybrid Nano-Catalysts for biodiesel production from waste cooking oils and animal fats.

A successful green biodiesel process was achieved through the full utilization of catalysts derived from waste. The catalysts in this study were composed of nano CaO (31.0 nm, calcined eggshell undergoing hydration-dehydration cycles) and MgAlOx mixed oxides (14.0 nm, derived from Mg-Al layered double hydroxide). Transesterification of waste cooking oil using only CaO resulted in 95.9 ± 0.8% biodiesel. Using a combination of CaO and MgAlOx in a mass ratio of 70:30 achieved an improved biodiesel yield of 97.8 ± 0.5% under optimal conditions (molar ratio of methanol to oil at 12:1, catalyst mass

Enhanced volatile fatty acid production from co-fermentation of spent mushroom waste and food waste with rumen microbes: Performance and mechanism.

OBJECTIVE: Co-fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass and food waste (FW) can enhance the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) during anaerobic fermentation. However, the effect and mechanism of co-fermentation of Auricularia auricula waste (AW) with FW remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect and mechanism of co-fermentation of Auricularia auricula waste (AW) with food waste (FW) on volatile fatty acid (VFA) production. METHODS: Anaerobic fermentation experiments were conducted at different AW/FW ratios (1:0, 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, 0:1) based on volatile solids (VS). VS

Waste denim valorization via co-production of bioethanol and recovered indigo: A sustainable strategy for reducing environmental risk of textile solid waste.

Most existing studies focus on the removal of dyes from wastewater, while generally neglecting the potential soil and groundwater pollution risks posed by the fixed indigo in solid waste denim fabrics after landfilling. Waste denim represents a category of textile solid waste. Leveraging its unique composition-rich in cellulose and indigo, this study proposed a novel high-value conversion concept: the simultaneous hydrolysis of cellulose and release of indigo from waste denim. The results showed that both acid and enzymatic hydrolysis could effectively hydrolyze cellulose, yielding glucose of

Dogmas and controversies in the handling of nitrogenous wastes: the effect of feeding and fasting on the excretion of ammonia, urea and other nitrogenous waste products in rainbow trout.

Ammonia and urea are the primary forms of nitrogen excretion in teleost fish. There exists, however, a discrepancy between the sum of ammonia plus urea nitrogen and total nitrogen, indicating that 'Нет данных' nitrogen end products may play an important role in nitrogen metabolism. The current study analysed a wide range of nitrogen end products in both fed and fasted juvenile rainbow trout. Ammonia-N (53-68%) and urea-N (6-10%) were confirmed as the most important forms of nitrogenous waste, but an interesting finding was the considerable excretion of nitrogen as amino acids (4-10%), via the gil

Is induction of fetal diuresis with intraamniotic furosemide effective for the removal of intestinal waste products from amniotic fluid?

AIM: In gastroschisis, contact with amniotic fluid (AF) causes intestinal damage. Intraamniotic meconium has been shown to be responsible for the intestinal damage, and intestinal damage has been shown to correlate with intraamniotic meconium concentrations. Intraamniotic meconium below a threshold level does not cause intestinal damage. Intraamniotic meconium concentrations can be lowered by AF exchange. Can induction of foetal diuresis by an intraamniotic injection of furosemide be used as an alternative method for the same purpose? METHOD: Pregnant rabbits on the 23rd - 25th gestational da

Valorization of Food By-Products into a Zero-Waste Broth: Effects of Yeast Extract on Composition and Sensory Properties.

Food losses and waste occur throughout the food production chain, creating an urgent need for their recovery and valorization into sustainable food products. Sensory acceptance is crucial for consumer interest and market success and can be enhanced using yeast extract. However, strategies that simultaneously valorize meat and vegetable by-products into nutritionally and functionally enriched products while ensuring sensory acceptability have been scarcely investigated. This study examined whether poultry carcasses after mechanical meat separation, combined with root vegetable processing residu

Synergistic atmospheric influence on the co-pyrolysis of antibiotic sludge and waste bicycle tires: Optimal drivers, products, and pathways.

Effective management of antibiotic sludge (AS) is essential for disease prevention. This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of AS with polyurethane (PU) and rubber tires (RT), focusing on its key drivers, synergies, resulting products, and atmospheric (N2 versus CO2) dependency. Composite pyrolysis index indicated superior co-pyrolysis properties of AS with PU or RT in the CO2 atmosphere compared with those in the N2 atmosphere. The strongest synergistic effect occurred at an optimal ratio of 75 % AS to 25 % PU (AP31) or 25 % RT (AR31), regardless of the atmosphere. Real-time gas analysis rev

Contribution identification of hydrolyzed products of potassium ferrate on promoting short-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge.

Potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) has been extensively employed to promote short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) because of its potent oxidizing property and formation of alkaline hydrolyzed products (potassium hydroxide, KOH and ferric hydroxide, Fe(OH)3). However, whether K2FeO4 actually works as dual functions of both an oxidizing agent and an alkalinity enhancer during the anaerobic fermentation process remains uncertain. This study aims to identify the contributions of hydrolyzed products of K2FeO4 on SCFAs production. The results

Effects of supplementation of pomegranate processing by-products and waste cooking oils as alternative feed resources in broiler nutrition.

Agricultural residues can be used as alternative feed sources in industrial chicken production. The impacts of different levels of pomegranate peel and waste cooking oil as an agricultural residue on broilers' nutrition were investigated. Results showed that the replacement of 8% pomegranate peel in diets decreased the growth performance of broilers. Supplementing 8% pomegranate peel in diets reduced apparent nutrient digestibility. The highest level of waste oil inclusion in broiler diets indicated negative impacts on apparent zmetabolizable energy and crude fat apparent nutrients digestibili

Toxicity of electronic waste leachates to Daphnia magna: screening and toxicity identification evaluation of different products, components, and materials.

Electronic waste has become one of the fastest growing waste problems in the world. It contains both toxic metals and toxic organics. The aim of this study was to (1) investigate to what extent toxicants can leach from different electronic products, components, and materials into water and (2) identify which group of toxicants (metals or hydrophobic organics) that is causing toxicity. Components from five discarded electronic products (cell phone, computer, phone modem, keyboard, and computer mouse) were leached in deionised water for 3 days at 23°C in concentrations of 25 g/l for metal compon

Application of waste derived magnetic acid-base bifunctional CoFe/biochar/CaO as an efficient catalyst for biodiesel production from waste cooking oil.

The loss of active components, weak acid resistance, and low recover efficiency of common Ca-based catalysts limited its further development and application. In this study, to effectively produce biodiesel from waste cooking oil (WCO), a green and recyclable magnetic acid-base bifunctional CoFe/biochar/CaO catalyst was prepared from sargassum and river snail shell waste via hydrothermal method. The catalysts' structure and properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO2/NH3 temperature programmed desorption (CO2/NH3 TPD), etc., The prepared

A cleaner route of biodiesel production from waste frying oil using novel potassium tin oxide catalyst: A smart liquid-waste management.

The valorization of waste frying oil (WFO) to biodiesel has been carried out via solid base catalyzed transesterification reaction. A novel potassium tin oxide (KSO) catalyst was synthesized via polymer precursor auto combustion method. The catalyst showed the best physicochemical properties when it was calcined at 800 °C. Using KSO 800 catalyst, the highest FAME conversion (99.5%) of WFO found at moderated reaction condition within very short time (35 min); moreover, no leaching of K-species was observed in reusability test upto 5th cycle. Kinetics proved that the above catalytic reaction fol

Isopropanol production using engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum from waste rice straw biomass.

Isopropanol, a well-known biofuel, is a widely used precursor for chemical products that can replace nonrenewable petroleum energy. Here, engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum that can effectively utilize all xylose and glucose in agricultural waste rice straw to produce isopropanol was described. First, codon mutations were introduced into transporters and glycolytic-related genes to decrease the glucose preference of C. glutamicum. A more energetically favorable xylose oxidative pathway was constructed that replaced traditional xylose isomerization pathways, saving twice the number of enzyma
