Adaptive carbon sponge filters for low-energy decentralized water purification.

Global water insecurity increasingly exposes the limitations of centralized water treatment infrastructure, which relies on rigid, sequential unit operations that are poorly suited to decentralized, emergency, and resource-constrained situations. Here, we introduce a scalable carbon sponge (CS) platform that integrates mechanically tunable filtration, chemical adsorption, and electrically-assisted filtration and adsorption within a single adaptive architecture. Derived through facile carbonization of melamine sponge, the base CS features a hierarchical porous framework (specific surface area >

Responding to epidemics in large-scale humanitarian crises: a case study of the cholera response in Yemen, 2016-2018.

BACKGROUND: Large epidemics frequently emerge in conflict-affected states. We examined the cholera response during the humanitarian crisis in Yemen to inform control strategies. METHODS: We conducted interviews with practitioners and advisors on preparedness; surveillance; laboratory; case management; malnutrition; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); vaccination; coordination and insecurity. We undertook a literature review of global and Yemen-specific cholera guidance, examined surveillance data from the first and second waves (28 September 2016-12 March 2018) and reviewed reports on airst

Progress Toward Global Eradication of Dracunculiasis, January 2019-June 2020.

Dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) is caused by the parasite Dracunculus medinensis and is acquired by drinking water containing copepods (water fleas) infected with D. medinensis larvae. The worm typically emerges through the skin on a lower limb approximately 1 year after infection, resulting in pain and disability (1). There is no vaccine or medicine to treat the disease; eradication efforts rely on case containment* to prevent water contamination. Other interventions to prevent infection include health education, water filtration, chemical treatment of unsafe water with temephos (an orga

Prevalence of undernutrition and its associated factors among pregnant women attending antenatal care service in public hospitals in Mogadishu, Somalia.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal undernutrition remains a major public health concern globally, particularly in Somalia, where conflict, poverty, and food insecurity exacerbate nutritional deficiencies. Undernutrition during pregnancy poses serious risks to both maternal and fetal health, including increased maternal mortality, low birth weight, and adverse developmental outcomes. Despite its critical implications, there is limited evidence on the burden and associated factors of maternal undernutrition in Somalia. This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors of undernutrition among pregnan

Somalia's Drought-Disease Spiral: Climate Shocks as an Emerging Public Health Security Threat.

This narrative commentary examines Somalia's drought-disease spiral using selected published literature, humanitarian reports, surveillance updates, and climate-health evidence. It focuses on how recurrent droughts, floods, food insecurity, displacement, malnutrition, and fragile health-system capacity interact to increase the risk of climate-sensitive infectious diseases. Somalia is among the countries most vulnerable to climate variability, and repeated environmental shocks have intensified humanitarian needs while placing additional pressure on an already fragile health system. Recent clima

The prevalence of malnutrition and its associated risk factors among women of reproductive age in Ziway Dugda district, Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia.

OBJECTIVES: Adequate nutrition is an important factor to determine the health and well-being of women, children and society as a whole. Although various nutritional policies were formulated and aimed at reducing malnutrition at the global level, the magnitude of malnutrition (body mass index [BMI] <18.5 kg/m2) among women remained between 10% and 40% in most low- and middle-income countries. We aimed to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and to identify the associated risk factors among women of reproductive age. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Ziway Dugda distric

Hydrogeological investigation of ground water arsenic contamination in south Calcutta.

Typical clinical symptoms of acute arsenic poisoning have been detected in 1000 residents near a factory in P.N. Mitra Lane, Behala, South Calcutta, located in a thickly populated area manufacturing copper acetoarsenite (Paris-Green) an arsenical pesticide for the past 25 years. Soil around the effluent dumping point of the factory was exceptionally contaminated, with arsenic, copper and chromium concentrations of 20,100-35,500 mg kg-1, 33,900-51,100 mg kg-1 and 5300-5510 mg kg-1. Arsenic and copper concentrations in bore-hole soils collected up to a depth of 24.4 m at the effluent dumping poi

Ecofeminist heterotopias: gendered ecologies, memory, and ecological displacement in Elif Shafak's There Are Rivers in the Sky.

Ecofeminism reveals how ecological degradation and water insecurity have a profound impact on women and marginalized communities, emphasizing that ecology, power, displacement, and social inequality are deeply interconnected. The article proposes "ecofeminist heterotopias" as an analytical framework combining ecofeminism, Astrida Neimanis' Hydrofeminism, and Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopia to study how rivers function as gendered counter-spaces in the novel There Are Rivers in the Sky (2024). The research emphasizes that rivers in the novel do not simply function as ecological element

Progress toward global eradication of dracunculiasis--January 2011-June 2012.

Dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease) is caused by Dracunculus medinensis, a parasitic worm. Approximately 1 year after initial infection from contaminated drinking water, the worm emerges through the skin of the infected person, usually on the lower limb. Pain and secondary bacterial wound infection can cause temporary or permanent disability that disrupts work and schooling for the entire family. In 1986, the World Health Assembly (WHA) called for dracunculiasis elimination and the Guinea Worm Eradication Program, supported by The Carter Center, World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations

The inverse relationship between national food security and annual cholera incidence: a 30-country analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Individual and household-level evidence suggests a relationship between food insecurity and cholera risk. The relationship between national food security and the size of cholera outbreaks is unknown. METHODS: We analysed the relationship between national food security and annual cholera incidence rate from 2012 to 2015 across 30 countries. We used components of the Global Food Security Index (GFSI) as measures of food security. We included countries with available GFSI reporting cases of cholera during the study period, excluding high-income countries. We developed multivariable

Increased Vulnerability to Dehydration Due to Heat Stress and Drought Across Reproductive States for Pastoralist Women in Northern Kenya.

OBJECTIVES: Extreme weather events, like drought and heat stress, make it harder to meet water needs in water-insecure settings, particularly vulnerable groups. This study examines how short-term (heat stress) and long-term (drought) water stress affects hydration status across reproductive states (pregnant, lactating, compared to non-pregnant/non-lactating) for Daasanach semi-nomadic pastoralist women in northern Kenya. METHODS: Drawing on unbalanced panel data, we analyzed 565 observations from 303 women (aged ≥ 16 years) in 2019-2024. Hydration was assessed via urine specific gravity (USG)

Atopic Dermatitis in Indigenous Communities in Canada: A Scoping Review and Environmental Scan of Assessment Instruments, Access Barriers, and Teledermatology Interventions.

Indigenous communities in Canada experience higher prevalence and disease burden of atopic dermatitis (AD) alongside systemic barriers to dermatologic care. This scoping review synthesizes evidence on AD prevalence, assessment approaches, barriers to access, and intervention models for Indigenous populations, an area with a critical dearth of rigorous research. A PROSPERO-registered, PRISMA-compliant systematic search of 5 databases identified limited rigorous research: No randomized trials specific to AD management exist, and Indigenous participants remain underrepresented in clinical trials

Exploring the Effects of Climate Variability on Diarrheal Diseases, Malaria, and Malnutrition in Children Under Five Years in Revuè Sub-Basin, Manica Province, Mozambique.

Transmission of water, vector, and foodborne diseases tends to increase with climate variability, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Globally, this dynamic contributes to adverse health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries such as Mozambique. Nevertheless, the influence of climate variability on disease patterns remains unclear. We assessed the potential relationship between climate variables and diseases, including diarrheal diseases, malaria, and malnutrition, in four districts around the Revuè sub-basin. An ecological, longitudinal, retrospective study conducted fr

Natural infrastructure in dryland streams (NIDS) can establish regenerative wetland sinks that reverse desertification and strengthen climate resilience.

In this article we describe the natural hydrogeomorphological and biogeochemical cycles of dryland fluvial ecosystems that make them unique, yet vulnerable to land use activities and climate change. We introduce Natural Infrastructure in Dryland Streams (NIDS), which are structures naturally or anthropogenically created from earth, wood, debris, or rock that can restore implicit function of these systems. This manuscript further discusses the capability of and functional similarities between beaver dams and anthropogenic NIDS, documented by decades of scientific study. In addition, we present

Greening African Cities for Sustainability: A Systematic Review of Urban Gardening's Role in Biodiversity and Socio-Economic Resilience.

Urban gardening, particularly through food-producing green spaces, is increasingly recognized as a key strategy for addressing the complex challenges of climate change, food insecurity, biodiversity loss, and social inequity in African cities. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from 47 peer-reviewed studies across sub-Saharan Africa between 2000-2025 to analyze how urban home gardens, rooftop farms, and agroforestry systems contribute to sustainable urban development. The protocol follows PRISMA guidelines and focuses on (i) plant species selection for ecological resilience, (ii) inte

Climate change, migration, and infectious disease vulnerability at Europe's southern border: Lampedusa as a sentinel interface.

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean basin is warming faster than the global average, reshaping ecological niches for vector-borne, water-borne, and environmentally linked pathogens. Concurrent climate shocks across the Sahel, West Africa, and the Horn of Africa-combined with conflict, food and water insecurity, and fragile health systems-drive sustained mobility toward North Africa and Europe. Frontline entry points along the Central Mediterranean route often capture early clinical signals of these pressures. METHODS: We conducted a narrative, expert-informed evidence synthesis integrating peer-rev

Beyond the battlefield: an analysis of the war-related health impacts in the Gaza strip, Palestine.

In Palestine, particularly the Gaza Strip, the ongoing military aggression has triggered a complex health crisis that extends beyond visible injuries and hospital admissions. The destruction of healthcare infrastructure, loss of medical personnel, and shortages of essential supplies have exacerbated numerous underreported health challenges. Drawing upon reports from WHO and UN agencies, as well as peer-reviewed scientific literature, this perspective highlights the obscured morbidities of war, including disrupted immunization programs, menstrual supply insecurity, reproductive health complicat

Food insecurity and self-reported cholera in Haitian households: An analysis of the 2012 Demographic and Health Survey.

BACKGROUND: Both cholera and food insecurity tend to occur in impoverished communities where poor access to food, inadequate sanitation, and an unsafe water supply often coexist. The relationship between the two, however, has not been well-characterized. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of household-level data from the 2012 Demographic and Health Survey in Haiti, a nationally and sub-nationally representative cross-sectional household survey conducted every five years. We used multivariable logistic regression to evaluate the relationship between household food security (as measured
