Background: The sub-Saharan Africa has the fastest rate of urbanisation in the world. However, infrastructure growth in the region is slower than urbanisation rates, leading to inadequate provision and access to basic services such as piped safe drinking water. Lack of sufficient access to safe water has the potential to increase the burden of waterborne diseases among these urbanising populations. This scoping review assesses how the relationship between waterborne diseases and water sufficiency in Africa has been studied. Methods: In April 2020, we searched the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase

Typhoid fever is caused by Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi (Salmonella Typhi). Syndromes in patients vary from asymptomatic carriers to severe or death outcomes, which are frequently reported in African and Southeast Asian countries. It is one of the most common waterborne transmission agents, whose transmission is likely impacted by climate change. Here, we claimed the evidence and consequences of climate-related foodborne and waterborne diseases have increased and provided possible mitigations against Typhoidal Salmonella dissemination.

Waterborne exposure to human viruses through contact with sewage-contaminated water environments can result in infections associated with a wide range of illnesses. Gastrointestinal symptoms are the most commonly encountered manifestations of waterborne viral illness. Respiratory diseases, neurological diseases and paralysis can also occur. Whether viral infections resulting in health outcomes like cancer might also be transmitted by the waterborne route is unknown. Recently, viruses belonging to two oncogenic groups-Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs) and Human Polyomaviruses (HPyVs)-have been dete

Climate change is an urgent global health challenge, with floods becoming increasingly frequent and exacerbating the spread of infectious diseases. With its diverse climates and recurring natural disasters, Latin America is particularly susceptible to outbreaks following floods. These events disrupt ecosystems and create ideal conditions for the spread of waterborne and vector-borne pathogens. Floods also damage infrastructure, displace populations, and restrict access to clean water and healthcare services, further compounding public health risks. This review assesses the impact of floods on

Waterborne diseases account for 1.5 million deaths a year globally, particularly affecting children in low-income households in subtropical areas. It is one of the most enduring and economically devastating biological hazards in our society today. The World Health Organization Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (health-EDRM) Framework highlights the importance of primary prevention against biological hazards across all levels of society. The framework encourages multi-sectoral coordination and lessons sharing for community risk resilience. A narrative review, conducted in March 2021

A significant global problem is the microbiological contamination of foods and water. The microorganisms associated with about half of the foodborne disease outbreaks still go unrecognized, primarily as a result of inadequate diagnostic methods and sampling. A significant amount of food- and waterborne diseases are associated with viruses, information that has been obtained only in recent years. Improved diagnostic methods have established that caliciviruses are the most important non-bacterial pathogens associated with food- and waterborne outbreaks, and are the major cause of seafood-associa

Waterborne parasitic diseases form one of common and important public health and economic problems in low- and middle-income countries, though little is known on the burden and patterns of these diseases in most regions. This systematic scoping review informs on the prevalence and pattern of waterborne parasitic infections in eastern Africa from 1st of January 1941 to 31st of December 2019. The review found limited number of published studies on waterborne parasitic diseases, though 13 of the 15 studied countries in eastern Africa provided one or more published report(s) totalling 47 reports.

Laboratories can play a critical and preemptive role as a community's first line of surveillance in detecting waterborne outbreaks when they are aware of increased numbers of stool specimens and suspect or identify Cryptosporidium as the cause of illness. In addition, strong working relationships between clinical laboratories and local or state public health laboratories or agencies can facilitate a meaningful and rapid response related to potential outbreaks. Clinical and public health laboratories potentially play a key role in adding to the limited knowledge of the endemicity and ultimately

Susan Pearson BSc reports on a recent specialist waterborne diseases 'masterclass' held in Nottingham, at which leading experts discussed not only the control of Pseudomonas, but also other problematic waterborne pathogens such as Legionella, the cause of Legionnaires' disease. The Pall Medical-sponsored event provided plenty of 'food for thought' for estates and facilities personnel responsible for hospital water systems, and clearly demonstrated how difficult and persistent a foe organisms such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella pneumophila, which, if left unchecked, pose significant p

Safe water and food are impactful public health measures that improved significantly during the past century in the United States. But waterborne and foodborne illnesses continue to cause significant morbidity and mortality despite existing public health control measures and regulations. It was estimated that each year in the United States, 31 pathogens caused 37.2 million illnesses, with 36.4 million domestically acquired. Of those, 9.4 million were foodborne: 59% were caused by viruses, 39% by bacteria, and 2% by parasites. The pathogens that caused the most foodborne illnesses were noroviru

OBJECTIVES: Flooding provides an opportunity for epidemics of waterborne viral, protozoan, or bacterial diseases to develop in affected areas. Epidemic levels of disease may translate into higher than average levels of health services use, depending in part on help-seeking behaviors. The authors investigated whether the flooding that occurred as a result of Hurricane Floyd in September 1999 was associated with an increase in outpatient visits for waterborne diseases among Medicaid enrollees in eastern North Carolina.
METHODS: Using a difference-in-differences estimation technique, the authors

In 2018, state and territory health departments in Australia received 51,174 notifications of enteric diseases potentially related to food. This was 28% higher than the five-year average number of notifications for enteric diseases in Australia. Consistent with previous years, most notified infections were either campylobacteriosis (n = 33,143; 65%) or salmonellosis (n = 14,144; 28%). In total, 137 gastrointestinal outbreaks, including 127 foodborne outbreaks, were reported in 2018. The remaining ten outbreaks were due to environmental or probable environmental transmission (nine outbreaks) an

Waterborne diseases are a major global problem, resulting in high morbidity and mortality, and massive economic costs. The ability to rapidly and reliably detect and monitor the spread of waterborne diseases is vital for early intervention and preventing more widespread disease outbreaks. Pathogens are, however, difficult to detect in water and are not practicably detectable at acceptable concentrations that need to be achieved in treated drinking water (which are of the order one per million litre). Furthermore, current clinical-based surveillance methods have many limitations such as the inv

Giardia and Cryptosporidium spp. are parasitic protozoa which are frequent etiologic agents of waterborne diseases. This lecture will summarize the main biological and environmental factors involved in the potential risk for waterborne transmission of giardiosis and cryptosporidiosis, which have caused many outbreaks in different geographical areas. In particular, the current epidemiological situation of these parasitoses in Italy will be analysed, on the basis of research carried out on humans and on the environment. Finally, current methods for evaluating the presence of Giardia cysts and Cr

The current study presents a comprehensive review of worldwide waterborne parasitic protozoan outbreaks reported between 2017 and 2022. In total, 416 outbreaks were attributed to the waterborne transmission of parasitic protozoa. Cryptosporidium accounted for 77.4% (322) of outbreaks, while Giardia was identified as the etiological agent in 17.1% (71). Toxoplasma gondii and Naegleria fowleri were the primary causes in 1.4% (6) and 1% (4) of outbreaks, respectively. Blastocystis hominis, Cyclospora cayetanensis, and Dientamoeba fragilis were independently identified in 0.72% (3) of outbreaks. M

This study employs a multi-method approach - bibliometric analysis, knowledge mapping, BERTopic modeling, and content analysis - to map the evolving research landscape on climate change and water-related diseases (WRDs) from 1995 to 2025. Our analysis reveals a marked increase in publications post-2007, peaking in 2024, yet this growth is characterized by significant geographic concentration. The United States, China, and the United Kingdom dominate scholarly output, while a centralized collaboration network sidelines many high-risk regions, creating a critical evidence gap. Thematic mapping s

BACKGROUND: Flooding from natural disasters has become increasingly common worldwide, increasing the risk of infectious disease transmission, particularly waterborne and vector-borne infections. Although many studies report outbreaks following floods, the evidence remains fragmented across regions and pathogens. A comprehensive review is needed to clarify these associations and inform effective prevention and response strategies.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library was conducted between November 2024 and January 2025, identifying studies published from Jan

Waterborne infectious diseases are a major public health concern worldwide. Few methods have been established that are capable of measuring human exposure to multiple waterborne pathogens simultaneously using non-invasive samples such as saliva. Most current methods measure exposure to only one pathogen at a time, require large volumes of individual samples collected using invasive procedures, and are very labor intensive. In this article, we applied a multiplex bead-based immunoassay capable of measuring IgG antibody responses to six waterborne pathogens simultaneously in human saliva to esti

Climate change affects the spread of waterborne infectious diseases, yet research on vulnerability to outbreaks remains limited. This integrative review examines how climate variables (temperature and precipitation) relate to human vulnerability factors in Pakistan. By 2060, mean temperatures are projected to rise from 21.68°C (2021) to 30°C, with relatively stable precipitation. The epidemiological investigation in Pakistan identified Diarrhea (119,000 cases/year), Malaria (2.6 million cases/year), and Hepatitis (A and E) as the most prevalent infections. This research highlighted vulnerabili

The growth of the world population has increased the demand for water. On the other hand, climate change shows us that the water sources that were previously safe are not anymore. There are inequalities between urban and rural areas, thus 96% of the urban world population uses drinking water sources compared to 84% of the rural population, while 82% of the urban population versus 51% of the rural population use sanitation facilities. In Peru, 80.4% of homes are supplied with water through a public network. In the urban area, this service covers 83.2%; while in the rural area 71.3% of homes hav
