Mild to moderate hypohydration reduces boys' high-intensity cycling performance in the heat.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of 1 and 2 % hypohydration on high-intensity cycling performance of 10- to 12-year-old boys in the heat. METHODS: In a counterbalanced order, nine boys attended three sessions in which they cycled intermittently (6 × 10-min bouts at 40-45 % [Formula: see text]) in a climate chamber. During each session, environmental conditions and water intake were individually adjusted to achieve a target hypohydration level of 0, 1 or 2 %, based on change in body weight (BW). Following 45 min of rest in thermoneutral conditions when the target hypohydration was maintained, e

Preconditioning cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation facilitates the neuroplastic effect of subsequent anodal transcranial direct current stimulation applied during cycling in young adults.

The study aimed to examine the effect of a pre-conditioning cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) before subsequent anodal-tDCS (atDCS) was applied during low workload cycling exercise on the corticospinal responses in young healthy individuals. Eleven young subjects participated in two sessions receiving either conditioning ctDCS or sham stimulation, followed by atDCS while cycling (i.e. ctDCS-atDCS, sham-atDCS) at 1.2 times their body weight (84 ± 20 W) in a counterbalanced double-blind design. Corticospinal excitability was measured with motor evoked potentials (MEPs) eli

Interactive Virtual Reality Reduces Quadriceps Pain during High-Intensity Cycling.

PURPOSE: Brief, high-intensity cycling is popular because physiological benefits accrue with a short workout time, but burning pain in the quadriceps is a potential barrier to engaging in this type of exercise. Virtual reality (VR) can temporarily decrease pain, but its effect on muscle pain during high-intensity exercise is unknown. The primary purpose of this experiment was to test whether adding interactive VR (I-VR) to high-intensity cycling could reduce quadriceps pain or improve performance. METHODS: Ninety-four adults who were physically active in their leisure time and age 18 to 29 yr

Effect of cycling temperature on growth, energy metabolism and nutrient retention of individual male turkeys.

1. Each week, from 12 to 20 weeks of age, male turkeys of a heavy strain were subjected to cool (C; 16 degrees C), hot (H; 29 degrees C), and cycling temperatures, and fed on a standard diet ad libitum for 4 d. Lighting was intermittent, 3 h on, 3 h off. Food was given when lights were on. Those given cycling temperatures (3 h C; 3 h H) were given food and light during the cool (eat-when-cool, EC) or hot (EH) periods. 2. Birds in all treatments gained similar amounts of weight from 12-14 weeks of age. Thereafter, birds in C maintained gains, the body weight gains of birds in EC and EH declined

Comparison of Kettlebell and Cycling Exercise on Heart Rate Variability.

BACKGROUND: Kettlebells, dating back to 1703 in Russia, offer a full-body workout for strength, endurance, and flexibility. They activate back and hip musculature, reduce low back injury risk, and improve postural coordination. Cycling induces muscle hypertrophy, guiding exercise prescription. OBJECTIVE: The study evaluates the impact of kettlebell and cycling exercise on heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy young adults, assessing lifestyle, body mass index (BMI), and relationship with HRV. METHODS: A pilot study at King George's Medical University's Department of Physiology in Lucknow,

An acute naproxen dose does not affect core temperature or Interleukin-6 during cycling in a hot environment.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs' anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory effects has led some individuals to theorize these medications may blunt core body temperature (Tc) increases during exercise. We utilized a double-blind, randomized, and counterbalanced cross-over design to examine the effects of a 24-h naproxen dose (3-220 mg naproxen pills) and placebo (0 mg naproxen) on Tc and plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations during cycling in a hot or ambient environment. People with down syndrome exhibit a blunted hemodynamic response to isometric handgrip but not cycling exercise.

People with Down syndrome (DS) have a depressed heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) response to exercise. We tested the hypothesis that people with DS, compared to controls (CON), would have more blunted HR and BP responses to isometric rather than dynamic cycling exercise. Twenty-eight individuals with DS and 14 controls (16-40 years) completed a 6-min cycling exercise at 50% body weight and 2-min handgrip isometric exercise at 30% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). HR and BP were sampled via a single-lead system and finger photoplethysmography, respectively. Hemodynamic responses to bo

Hypothalamic NPY-Y1R Interacts with Gonadal Hormones in Protecting Female Mice against Obesity and Neuroinflammation.

We previously demonstrated that Npy1rrfb mice, which carry the conditional inactivation of the Npy1r gene in forebrain principal neurons, display a sexually dimorphic phenotype, with male mice showing metabolic, hormonal and behavioral effects and females being only marginally affected. Moreover, exposure of Npy1rrfb male mice to a high-fat diet (HFD) increased body weight growth, adipose tissue, blood glucose levels and caloric intake compared to Npy1r2lox male controls. We used conditional knockout Npy1rrfb and Npy1r2lox control mice to examine whether forebrain disruption of the Npy1r gene

A role for suppressed skeletal muscle thermogenesis in pathways from weight fluctuations to the insulin resistance syndrome.

An impressive body of epidemiological evidence suggests that a history of large perturbations in body weight earlier in life, independently of excess weight, is a risk factor for later development of insulin-related complications, namely central obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Such an increased risk has been reported in men and women who in young adulthood experienced weight fluctuations that involved weight recovery after weight loss caused by disease, famine or voluntary 'yoyo' dieting, and is particularly strong when the weight fluctuations occurred much earlier in life

"The Weight Is Even Worse Than the Cancer": Exploring Weight Preoccupation in Women Treated for Breast Cancer.

Cancer-related changes in body weight are problematic given that excess weight is associated with an increased risk of cancer reoccurrence and mortality. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of weight-concerned women treated for early-stage breast cancer. A purposeful sample of women were selected based on criteria for high weight and body image concerns ( n = 11; Mage = 65.31 ± 10.96 years). Each participant engaged in a one-on-one semi-structured interview. Five themes were identified: weight concerns contributed to psychological distress, prevalent history of

Generation of reactive oxygen species by the redox cycling of nitroprusside.

The formation of oxygen species during the redox cycling of sodium nitroprusside by rat liver microsomes and by chemical reductants was evaluated. The reduction of sodium nitroprusside by ascorbate and glutathione results in formation of the nitroprusside nitroxide radical which, on freezing at 77 K, results exclusively in the tetracyano [Fe(CN4)NO]2- and pentacyano [Fe(CN5)NO]3- forms of nitroxide radicals, respectively. The role of reducing agents on the inter-conversion of these two forms of nitroxide radical is discussed. The NADH and NADPH dependent microsomal reduction of nitroprusside r

Glycogen supercompensation in skeletal muscle after cycling or running followed by a high carbohydrate intake the following days: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Bergström and Hultman demonstrated that exhaustive exercise depleting muscle glycogen followed by three days on a carbohydrate-rich diet resulted in a doubling of the glycogen content. Although many studies have confirmed this finding, the magnitude of glycogen supercompensation and the mechanisms behind elevated glycogen content after exercise remain unclear. This systematic review meta-analyzed investigations on muscle glycogen supercompensation after exercise and 3-5 days on a high-carbohydrate diet. Meta-regression analyses were conducted to explore the influence of specific

Total Energy Expenditure and ad Libitum Fluid/Nutrient Intake During a 24-Hour Mountain-Bike Event: A Case Study.

UNLABELLED: Previous studies have used the doubly labeled water method to evaluate the total energy expenditure (TEE) during Ironman, ultramarathon trail runs, and competitive road cycling. However, the technique has not been applied to a 24-hour cross-country mountain-bike event. PURPOSE: This case study aimed to measure the TEE, cycling metrics, and ad libitum nutrient/fluid intake during a 24-hour cross-country mountain-bike race. METHODS: A trained male cyclist (41 y, 74.1 kg, 172.4 cm) received an oral dose of doubly labeled water prior to the 24-hour event for the calculations of TEE a

Effects of 40% of Maximum Oxygen Uptake Intensity Cycling Combined with Blood Flow Restriction Training on Body Composition and Serum Biomarkers of Chinese College Students with Obesity.

Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) is a new method for promoting muscle growth and improving muscle function, even with relatively low-intensity exercise. BFRT on patients with obesity has not been extensively studied. This study aimed to analyze the effects of cycling at 40% of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) combined with BFRT on body composition and serum biomarkers among college students with obesity. This pilot study included thirty-seven male college students with obesity aged 18-22 years (experimental group (EG): n = 18; control group (CG): n = 19). The EG conducted 40% VO2max cyclin

Unveiling microplastic's role in nitrogen cycling: Metagenomic insights from estuarine sediment microcosms.

Marine microplastics (MPs) pollution, with rivers as a major source, leads to MPs accumulation in estuarine sediments, which are also nitrogen cycling hotspots. However, the impact of MPs on nitrogen cycling in estuarine sediments has rarely been documented. In this study, we conducted microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of commonly encountered polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) MPs, with two MPs concentrations (0.3% and 3% wet sediment weight) based on environmental concentration considerations and dose-response effects, on sediment dissolved oxygen (DO) diffusion capacity and
