The impact of a hyaluronic acid derivative-containing care system on the wettability of PEG-coated rigid lenses.

PURPOSE: This study investigated how a contact lens care solution containing a hyaluronic acid derivative (HAD) impacts wettability of rigid lenses, with and without polyethylene glycol (PEG) surface coatings when tested in vitro. METHODS: The adsorption of fluorescently labelled HAD and hyaluronic acid (HA) on to PEG and non-PEG coated lenses was compared by fluorescence quantification. The impact of HAD on sessile drop wettability was investigated on PEG and non-PEG coated lenses, which were cycled 300 times between an artificial tear solution (ATS) for 16 h and 8 h in a HAD or non-HAD cont

The importance of surface composition and wettability on the dissolution performance of high drug loading amorphous dispersion formulations.

One of the limitations with an amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) formulation strategy is low drug loading. Hydrophobic drugs have poor wettability and require a substantial amount of polymer to stabilize the amorphous drug and facilitate release. Using grazoprevir and hypromellose acetate succinate as model drug and polymer, respectively, the interplay between particle surface composition, particle wettability, and release performance was investigated. A hierarchical particle approach was used where the surfaces of high drug loading ASDs generated by either solvent evaporation or co-precipitati

Effects of interfacial layer wettability and thickness on the coating morphology and sirolimus release for drug-eluting stent.

Drug-eluting stents (DESs) have been used to treat coronary artery diseases by placing in the arteries. However, current DESs still suffer from polymer coating defects such as delamination and peeling-off that follows stent deployment. Such coating defects could increase the roughness of DES and might act as a source of late or very late thrombosis and might increase the incident of restenosis. In this regard, we modified the cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy surface with hydrophilic poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) or hydrophobic poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-grafted-poly(caprolacton

Surface Energy Distribution and Wettability Heterogeneity of Shale Revealed by Finite Concentration Inverse Gas Chromatography.

Wettability heterogeneity in shale reservoirs significantly influences fluid occurrence and flow behavior. However, existing methods make it difficult to quantitatively evaluate wettability heterogeneity through direct measurement of surface energy distributions. This study introduces finite concentration inverse gas chromatography (FC-IGC) to characterize three shale samples with distinct mineralogical compositions, total organic carbon (TOC) contents, and pore structures. The surface energy and its components were measured at 90 °C over a surface coverage range of 0.04-0.16. Based on the van

Effects of Substrate Surface Wettability on Ecofriendly Slippery Lubricant-Infused Porous Surfaces Inspired by Nepenthes.

The slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have attracted attention in studies for various potential applications. In order to improve the liquid-repellent property and self-healing ability to mechanical forces, SLIPS with various porous structures were reported. In many studies, the porous structures were chemically treated to be hydrophobic. However, the effects of oil infusion on this substrate hydrophobicity and how it will affect the SLIPS are still not fully understood. In this study, porous surfaces inspired by Nephenthes peristome were fabricated on 316 L stainless steel by fe

Wettability-Enhanced Photothermal Vertical Flow Biosensor on a Syringe for PSA Detection Using TaTe2 Nanosheets.

Photothermal vertical flow biosensors (VFBs) have emerged as attractive tools for biomarker detection, addressing restricted sensitivity, insufficient quantitative accuracy, and geometric mismatch issues of traditional photothermal lateral flow biosensors (LFBs) while retaining rapid detection capability. Herein, we developed a syringe-based wettability-enhanced photothermal vertical flow biosensor (SW-PVFB) for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) detection, integrating tantalum ditelluride (TaTe2) nanosheets as highly efficient photothermal probes and hydrophilic/hydrophobic patterned nitrocellul

Selective Wettability-Driven Evaporation-Enhanced Redox Cycling for Robust and Ultrasensitive Detection of Viral Particles.

Timely detection of viral infections, particularly in settings outside centralized laboratories, is essential for controlling outbreaks. Small electrochemical biosensors are appealing because they are fast, require microliter sample volumes, and can be integrated into portable devices. However, shrinking the sensor area often weakens the signal, making it difficult to detect low viral loads. We previously showed that combining redox cycling with controlled droplet evaporation can boost the signal. Yet, this method faces signal variability due to user-dependent droplet placement. Here, we intro

Photo- and Thermoresponsive Reversible Wettability and Corrosion Protection of Electrophoretically Deposited TiO2/Pectin Composite Coatings.

Stimuli-responsive coatings with reversible wettability hold substantial promise for biomedical, environmental, and industrial applications. Among these, titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based coatings are widely studied for their unique photoresponsivity and high refractive index; however, they often rely on complex and resource-intensive production processes, raising environmental and economic concerns. This study introduces a sustainable alternative with a TiO2-pectin composite coating on stainless steel fabricated via a simple electrophoretic deposition process. Pectin, a renewable hydrophilic poly

Coated Mg Alloy Implants: A Spontaneous Wettability Transition Process with Excellent Antibacterial and Osteogenic Functions.

AZ31B magnesium alloy (wt.%: Al 2.94; Zn 0.87; Mn 0.57; Si 0.0112; Fe 0.0027; Cu 0.0008; Ni 0.0005; Mg remaining) has appropriate mechanical properties, good biodegradability and biocompatibility and can be used as a good orthopedic implant material. AZ31B magnesium alloy with a superhydrophobic surface exhibits excellent corrosion resistance and antibacterial adhesion performance, but superhydrophobic surfaces also hinder osteoblast adhesion and proliferation on the implants, resulting in unsatisfactory osteogenic properties. Therefore, it is necessary to achieve the wettability transition of

Mel4-coated hyaluronic acid-laden etafilcon A contact lenses: Improved wettability with retained antimicrobial properties.

Soft contact lenses are a common mode of vision correction used worldwide. However, contact lens wearers often experience discomfort and are at risk of developing microbial infections. To address these issues, we designed Mel4-coated hyaluronic acid-laden etafilcon contact lenses to improve wettability while providing antimicrobial properties. The process involved the interaction of the etafilcon lens, which carries a net negative charge, with positively charged Mel4 (a cationic antimicrobial peptide). This was followed by interaction with hyaluronic acid (a negatively charged polymer). The co

Bioinspired colloidal crystal hydrogel pressure sensors with Janus wettability for uterus cervical canal tension perception.

The pursuit of flexible, sensitive, and cost-effective pressure sensors plays a pivotal role in medical diagnostics, particularly in the domain of cervical health monitoring. However, significant challenges remain in the economical production of flexible piezoresistive materials and the integration of microstructures aimed at enhancing sensor sensitivity. This urge highlights the use of innovative, stable hydrogel films that demonstrate robust adherence to soft biological tissues, thereby enabling prolonged bio-signal monitoring. In this study, we introduce an innovative integration of a flexi

Stearic acid-functionalized high amylose starch nanoparticles: Tailoring interfacial wettability and thermal stability via fatty acid localization.

High amylose starch nanoparticles (HSNPs) were functionalized with stearic acid (SA) to enhance their efficacy as Pickering emulsion stabilizers. Through ethanol pre-washing, removable and residual SA fractions were differentiated, revealing that removable SA primarily dictates surface hydrophobicity. Specifically, 8% SA loading increased the contact angle from 68° to 80°, indicating enhanced surface hydrophobicity and favoring particle adsorption at the oil-water interface. Emulsions stabilized by HSNP-SA composites exhibited superior stability, with unwashed 8% SA samples achieving a 100% em

Highly Soluble Ternary Amorphous Glibenclamide-Arginine-Folic Acid Formulation Using Arginine as a Coformer, and Wettability Agent.

Pregnant women must take medications to treat or prevent specific health conditions that arise during the gestational period. Glibenclamide (GBC), metformin (MET), or insulin (INS) can be prescribed to treat gestational diabetes; Folic acid (FA) is also prescribed during pregnancy to prevent newborn malformations. GBC and FA have low solubility and, therefore, low bioavailability. Amino acids (AA) have been previously proven to be efficient co-formers in binary systems, enhancing drug solubility in water. In this study, highly soluble pharmaceutical ternary formulations of GBC were prepared wi

Enhanced Photosensitizer Wettability via Anchoring Competition of Violet Phosphorus Quantum Dots for Breakthroughs in Photodynamic Film Sterilization.

Wettability is important for photodynamic film sterilization since higher wettability enhances the capture of bacteria in contact with photosensitizers. Herein, a small number of violet phosphorus quantum dots (VPQDs) are anchored into hypericin bacterial cellulose films (VP/Hy-BC films) to improve wettability, reducing the water contact angle from 56.8° to 33.0°. This modification facilitated more effective interactions between the bacteria and photosensitizers, rapidly inactivating 7 log10 CFU/mL of Staphylococcus aureus within 60 min. Quantum chemical characterization of zwitterionic structures: Supramolecular complexes for modifying the wettability of oil-water-limestone system.

In this work, we present a quantum chemical study pertaining to some supramolecular complexes acting as wettability modifiers of oil-water-limestone system. The complexes studied are derived from zwitterionic liquids of the types N'-alkyl-bis, N-alquenil, N-cycloalkyl, N-amyl-bis-beta amino acid or salts acting as sparkling agents. We studied two molecules of zwitterionic liquids (ZL10 and ZL13), HOMO and LUMO levels, and the energy gap between them, were calculated, as well as the electron affinity (EA) and ionization potential (IP), chemical potential, chemical hardness, chemical electrophil

A self-breathing electrode enabled by interface regulation and gradient wettability engineering for industrial H2O2 electrosynthesis.

High-performance gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) are essential for electrochemical H2O2 production, yet conventional catalyst layers (CLs) suffer from PTFE-fused encapsulation and disordered pores that create mass-transport bottlenecks and suppress three-phase interface (TPI) formation. Here, we introduce a non-fused particulate-packed catalyst/binder interface and elucidate the mechanisms governing TPI formation through 3D reconstruction and mesoscale LBM analyses. Guided by these insights, we construct a hierarchical gradient CL with ordered porosity and tunable wettability contrast, and mul

Electrospinning-based architectural engineering of multi-layered fibrous membranes with spatially defined wettability for solar desalination.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has been widely studied for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. However, it is still difficult to achieve efficient heat localization and continuous water transport in a single evaporator. In this work, a PAN-PS-PAN sandwich-structured photothermal evaporator was fabricated by sequential electrospinning using a dual-channel needle assembly. The evaporator consisted of polyacrylonitrile-polystyrene-polyacrylonitrile (PAN-PS-PAN, PPPS) layers. Carbon nanoparticles (C NPs) were incorporated into both PAN and PS precursor solutions, with a higher no
