Wildfire fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is an emerging health concern, yet its effects on mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue, remain unclear. Brazil faces one of the world's highest dengue burdens alongside frequent wildfires. We examined the association between short-term wildfire-specific PM2.5 exposure and dengue-related hospitalizations across Brazil. We conducted a nationwide two-stage time-series analysis using daily dengue-related hospitalizations and daily wildfire-specific PM2.5 concentrations across all Brazilian immediate-regions from 2008 to 2019. The wildfire-specific P

INTRODUCTION: Wildfires and deforestation potentially have direct effects on multiple health outcomes as well as indirect consequences for climate change. Tropical rainforest areas are characterised by high rainfall, humidity and temperature, and they are predominantly found in low-income and middle-income countries. This study aims to synthesise the methods, data and health outcomes reported in scientific papers on wildfires and deforestation in these locations.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will carry out a scoping review according to the Joanna Briggs Institute's (JBI) manual for scoping review

Plumes from wildfires are transported over large distances from remote to populated areas and threaten sensitive ecosystems. Dense wildfire plumes are processed by atmospheric oxidants and complex multiphase chemistry, differing from processes at typical ambient concentrations. For studying dense biomass burning plume chemistry in the laboratory, we establish a Photochemical Large Aerosol Chamber (PHOTO-LAC) being the world's largest aerosol chamber with a volume of 1800 m3 and provide its figures of merit. While the photolysis rate of NO2 (jNO2) is comparable to that of other chambers, the PH

We investigated short (first post-fire precipitation)- and long-term (11-month) impacts of the Caldor and Mosquito Fires (2021 and 2022) on water quality, dissolved organic matter, and disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in burned and adjacent unburned watersheds. Both burned watersheds experienced water quality degradation compared to their paired unburned watersheds, including increases in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and DBP precursors from precipitation events. DBP precursor concentrations during storm events were greater in the Caldor Fire's burned

Natural toxicants, particularly methoxy phenols (MPs) generated by wildfire lignin, can accumulate in the environment, and cause serious health hazards in living organisms. Although the toxicity of MPs such as guaiacol and catechol has recently been described, there is minimal evidence of ecotoxicological effects of syringol. As a result, this study focuses on determining the toxicity by evaluating the cytotoxic and teratogenic effects of syringol in vitro and in vivo in human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cells and zebrafish embryos, respectively. The ecotoxicity of syringol was predicted to be

We investigated patterns of volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination in drinking water systems affected by the California 2018 Camp Fire. We performed spatial analysis of over 5000 water samples collected over a 17 month period by a local water utility, sampled tap water for VOCs in approximately 10% (N = 136) of standing homes, and conducted additional nontargeted chemical analysis of 10 samples. Benzene contamination was present in 29% of service connections to destroyed structures and 2% of service connections to standing homes. A spatial pattern was apparent. Tap water in standing hom

Mediterranean forests are highly susceptible to wildfires, which can cause several impacts not only within burnt areas but also on downstream aquatic ecosystems. The ashes' washout from burnt areas by surface runoff can be a diffuse source of toxic substances, such as metals, when reaching the nearby aquatic systems, and can be noxious to aquatic organisms. The present work aimed at assessing the ecotoxicological effects of post-fire contamination on two aquatic producers (the microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata and the macrophyte Lemna minor) through in-situ bioassays, validating the obtained

Colorado is regularly impacted by long-range transport of wildfire smoke from upwind regions. This smoke is a major source of ambient PM2.5. Maternal exposure to total PM2.5 during pregnancy has been linked to decreased birth weight and other adverse outcomes, although the impact of wildfire smoke contribution has only recently been investigated. The objective of this study was to estimate associations between adverse pregnancy outcomes and ambient wildfire smoke PM2.5. Wildfire smoke PM2.5 exposures were estimated using a previously published method incorporating ground-based monitors and rem

INTRODUCTION: Wildfires are increasing over time due to climate change, resulting in increased human exposure to harmful particulate matter and other toxicants in wildfire smoke (WFS).
METHODS: A narrative review of literature indexed in PubMed was performed, focusing on studies of the respiratory health effects of wildfire smoke in children, clinical and public health management strategies, and advocacy opportunities for clinicians.
RESULTS: Children are particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of WFS, which include exacerbation of asthma and other underlying pulmonary disease, as we

Background/Objectives: Wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity worldwide, leading to widespread exposure to wildfire smoke and associated environmental stressors. While the respiratory and cardiovascular effects of wildfire smoke are well established, the potential neurological and mental health consequences have received growing attention. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from animal and human studies examining the effects of wildfire exposure on neurological function, behavior, and mental health, and explores the potential role of epigenetic mechanisms. Methods: A struc

Although wildfire smoke is a major public health concern, relatively little is known about individual avoidance behavior. In this paper, we use smartphone-location data to study behavioral responses to smoke during the 2018 California wildfire season, one of the deadliest in recent US history. Using individual-level data, we construct daily measures of when and where California residents spend their time. We find that high levels of smoke increase time spent at home and indoors, while decreasing mobility and time at work. However, we find adaptation starts at relatively high levels of smoke-si

Wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity worldwide, with growing evidence linking wildfire exposure to adverse mental health outcomes. This scoping review aimed to summarize and critically assess the existing quantitative literature on wildfire-related mental health impacts. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to identify studies published between 2000 and 2025, which we analyzed to understand how wildfires were investigated, evaluate how exposure was measured, assess mental health outcomes, and identify persistent gaps in the literature. BACKGROUND: Little is known about the role of wildfire smoke PM2.5 in cancer burden, despite ambient PM2.5 being classified as a human carcinogen.
METHODS: Daily wildfire smoke PM2.5 estimates were aggregated into cumulative (2006-2020) and recent (2018-2020) averages, and linked to 2022 tract-level cancer history prevalence estimates for all tracts in the contiguous US. Quasi-Poisson generalized additive models with random effects and spatial splines estimated prevalence ratios and 95% CIs for each exposure window, modeling smoke PM2.5 continuously (per IQR) and across tertiles. Models adjus

Wildfires are having disproportionate impacts on U.S. households. Notably, in California, over half of wildfire-destroyed homes (54%) are in low-income areas. We investigate the relationship between social vulnerability and wildfire community preparedness using building permits from 16 counties in California with 2.9 million buildings (2013-2021) and the U.S. government's designation of disadvantaged communities (DACs), which classifies a census tract as a DAC if it meets a threshold for certain burdens, such as climate, environmental, and socio-economic. Homes located in DACs are 29% more lik

As the number of highly destructive wildfires grows, it is increasingly important to understand the long-term changes that occur to fire-affected places. Integrating approaches from social and biophysical science, we document two forms of neighborhood change following the 2018 Camp Fire in the United States, examining the more than 17,000 residential structures within the burn footprint. We found that mobile or motor homes, lower-value residences, and absentee owner residences had a significantly higher probability of being destroyed, providing evidence that housing stock filtering facilitated

Wildfires are an increasing source of emissions into the air, with health effects modulated by the abundance and toxicity of individual species. In this work, we estimate reactive organic compounds (ROC) in western U.S. wildland forest fire smoke using a combination of observations from the 2019 Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) field campaign and predictions from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. Standard emission inventory methods capture 40-45% of the estimated ROC mass emitted, with estimates of primary organic aerosol particularl

This study evaluates for the first time the impact of a large wildfire on the hydrogeochemistry of a deeply AMD-affected river at the beginning of the wet season. To accomplish this, a high-resolution water monitoring campaign was performed within the basin coinciding with the first rainfalls after summer. Unlike similar events recorded in AMD-affected areas, where dramatic increases in most dissolved element concentrations, and decreases in pH values are observed as a result of evaporitic salts flushing and the transport of sulfide oxidation products from mine sites, a slight increase in pH v

Understanding the efficiency and variability of photochemical ozone (O3) production from western wildfire plumes is important to accurately estimate their influence on North American air quality. A set of photochemical measurements were made from the NOAA Twin Otter research aircraft as a part of the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) experiment. We use a zero-dimensional (0-D) box model to investigate the chemistry driving O3 production in modeled plumes. Modeled afternoon plumes reached a maximum O3 mixing ratio of 140 ± 50 ppbv (average ± standard d

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are a major cause of poor health outcomes during both childhood and adulthood. A growing body of evidence demonstrated associations between air pollution exposure during pregnancy and birth defects. To date, there is no study looking at birth defects and exposure to wildfire-related air pollution, which is suggested as a type of air pollution source with high toxicity for reproductive health.
OBJECTIVE: Our study addresses this gap by examining the association between birth defects and wildfire smoke exposure in Brazil between 2001 and 2018. Based on known difference
