BACKGROUND: We sought to identify early risk factors for work disability compensation prior to and after carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) surgery, and to determine whether pre-surgery disability compensation is associated with long-term disability.
METHODS: Washington State workers' compensation administrative data and data from interviews with workers 18 days (median) after submitting new workers' compensation claims for CTS were examined. Baseline risk factors for pre-surgery disability compensation and for long-term disability (>365 days of work disability compensation prior to 2 years after c

OBJECTIVES: We examined the rate of functional change (using performance measures and a self-report questionnaire) during interdisciplinary occupational rehabilitation in workers' compensation claimants with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. We also estimated the rate of improvement that could be considered clinically important and examined factors associated with rate of functional improvement.
METHODS: A prospective cohort design was used, with data collected before and after claimants participated in an interdisciplinary occupational rehabilitation program. A consecutive sample was

STUDY DESIGN: Historical cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To determine objective outcomes of return to work (RTW), permanent disability, postsurgical complications, opiate utilization, and reoperation status for chronic low back pain subjects with lumbar fusion. Similarly, RTW status, permanent disability, and opiate utilization were also measured for nonsurgical controls.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A historical cohort study of workers' compensation (WC) subjects with lumbar arthrodesis and randomly selected controls to evaluate multiple objective outcomes has not been previously published.

OBJECTIVE: Low back disorders (LBDs) are the most common complaint among workers; therefore, many questions arise about cost-effective treatment approaches. This investigation evaluated the differences in cost-related factors among a population of patients selecting chiropractic vs allopathic care for the treatment of nonspecific LBDs. The study hypothesis was that chiropractic care would be more cost-effective or equivalent to allopathic care for the noncomplicated LBDs.
METHODS: Cases were extracted from an insurance company database of patients reporting work-related low back injuries who

BACKGROUND: Korea has no surveillance system for work-related infectious disease. However, these diseases are compensated by the Korea Workers' Compensation & Welfare Service (KCOMWEL).
OBJECTIVES: To understand the nature and distribution of compensated occupational infectious diseases in Korea.
METHODS: We used the KCOMWEL electronic database to analyze compensated cases of work-related occupational infectious disease. We reviewed and confirmed diagnoses excluding denied claims, secondary infections, dermatoid diseases, duplicated cases and those with missing information. We calculated the

Using the database of the Korea Labor Welfare Corporation (KLWC), which is the public organization for workers' compensation in Korea, we analyzed the occupational infectious diseases among the health care workers who were compensated by the Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance (IACI). From January 1998 to December 2004, 307 cases of infectious diseases were approved as being cases of occupational diseases. Women accounted for 83% (254 cases) of the compensated cases. The most common age group was 20-29 yr of age (228 cases, 74.3%). The majority of infections were tuberculosis (203 cases

BACKGROUND: Injured workers often navigate healthcare services funded by multiple payers with distinct eligibility and funding rules. In Australia, general practitioner (GP) care is subsidised through the publicly funded health insurance system (Medicare). Injured workers may also access care funded by the workers' compensation system for work-related conditions. Consequently, injured workers may be required to navigate two healthcare funding systems simultaneously. This study examined injured workers' experiences of GP care across both systems to inform improved patient care and system reform

INTRODUCTION: US employee absence benefits may include workers' compensation (WC) for work-related injuries/illnesses, short- and long-term disability (STD and LTD, respectively) for non-work-related injuries/illnesses, and discretionary sick leave (SL). Absences can significantly impact business performance, and employers are intensifying efforts to manage benefits and connections with employee health. This research compares all-cause STD/LTD/WC/SL use and variation from baseline (2002) for eligible employees (EMPs) with mental disorders (MDs) and SUDs to determine if use/payments varied over

OBJECTIVES: The most common occupational disease that is compensated by Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance (IACI) in Korea is musculoskeletal disease (MSD). Although complaints about the workers' compensation system have been raised by injured workers with MSD, studies that examine workers' experiences with the Korean system are rare. This paper is a qualitative study designed to examine injured workers' experiences with the workers' compensation system in Korea. The aim of this study is to explore the drawbacks of the workers' compensation system and to suggest ways to improve this sy

BACKGROUND: Workers' Compensation differs from standard insurance, and it is unclear how or if Workers' Compensation insurance influences the diagnosis and treatment of hand and wrist disorders. The aim of this study was to compare the diagnosis and course of treatment of hand disorders between patients with Workers' Compensation insurance and patients with standard insurance.
METHODS: The complete medical records of patients who visited an academic orthopaedic hand clinic between January 2005 and January 2007 were reviewed, and information on patient history, utilization of diagnostic tests,

PURPOSE: Evaluate for variation between patients undergoing surgery for lateral epicondylitis (LE) with and without worker's compensation (WC) coverage.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on patients, identified by Current Procedural Terminology codes, who underwent LE surgery between 2008 and 2020. Following exclusions, there were 293 operative patients for LE, 34 of whom had WC coverage. Outcomes consisted of comparing before surgery and postoperative pain level reported by patient feedback during consultations, ability to perform job duties, and retaining employment. This study

This study sought to determine the impact of time to surgery on clinical outcomes in patients with spondylolisthesis in the workers' compensation (WC) population. There is conflicting evidence regarding the effect of time to surgery on patients with spondylolisthesis. Patients receiving WC are known to have worse outcomes following spine surgery compared with the general population. A total of 791 patients from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation were identified who underwent lumbar fusion for spondylolisthesis between 1993 and 2013. The patients were divided into those who had surgery wi

BACKGROUND: There are no population-based studies of return to work after ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE). We examine the predictors of return to work following a diagnosis of work-related UNE.
METHODS: Workers diagnosed with work-related UNE between 1995 and 2000 were identified from the administrative records of the Washington State workers' compensation system (n = 2,863). The medical records of 250 randomly selected surgical cases were reviewed. The end of wage replacement, our primary outcome, is a surrogate marker of the potential ability to return to work. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the longitudinal patterns of recovery among workers with compensated occupational back injuries.
METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study, with one-year follow-up via structured telephone interviews, among respondents off work because of "new" back injuries. Self-reported pain intensity was recorded at baseline and at four follow-up time points over the course of one year. Workers who answered the questionnaire on at least three occasions (n = 678) were classified into clusters according to their patterns of pain intensity over time using a two-step cluster analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare lost-time days and average and median workers' compensation claims costs between injured workers managed by OMNET Gold (OG) physicians and those managed by physicians not participating in OG. OG is a statewide health care provider network coordinated by occupational medicine physicians and established by the Louisiana Workers' Compensation Corporation (LWCC) to manage the medical care of injured workers.
METHODS: We identified and contrasted 158 lost-time claims managed by OG physicians and 1,323 claims managed by physicians not participating in OG during the f

This article examines the intersection of workers' compensation laws with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Much ADA and FMLA litigation stems from work-related injuries or illnesses. Knowledge of the ADA and FMLA may help prevent workers' compensation cases from resulting in costly employment litigation. Employees who are absent from work for a work-related condition often have rights under other laws, besides workers' compensation laws, such as the ADA and FMLA. Employers need to be cognizant of this while addressing these cases. First, th

UNLABELLED: We retrospectively analyzed the importance of factors relating to worker's compensation for 273 wrists in 211 consecutive patients who underwent primary carpal tunnel release. Patients were divided into three groups: non-work related, worker's compensation-uncontested, and worker's compensation-contested. Contested claims were those in which the worker's compensation carrier denied authorization for surgery, and in which such authorization was given following intervention by a plaintiff's attorney.
RESULTS: there were no statistically significant differences in postoperative retur
