Understanding the predictors of workplace violence amongst healthcare professionals is important to develop and implement prevention and mitigation strategies. We conducted a systematic review to synthesize the recent evidence on predictors of workplace violence across healthcare settings. The review has been done as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Two electronic databases (PubMed and Google Scholar) were used to search peer-reviewed studies published for the year 2009-2020 to identify studies reporting predictors of workplace vio

BACKGROUND: Workplace violence against emergency department (ED) personnel, especially nurses, is a growing global challenge, and it can have serious adverse impacts on the personnel's life and patient care. Investigating the experience of ED personnel can help healthcare authorities find the underlying factors causing violence and use proper strategies to prevent it.
METHODS: In this qualitative exploratory study, data were collected using in-depth, face to face and semi-structured interviews with 20 ED personnel working in five hospitals in west Azerbaijan of Iran. The interviews were trans

Medical personnel such as those working in emergency medical systems are in direct contact with the patient or the injured and are exposed to workplace violence. This study aimed to determine workplace violence against prehospital paramedical personnel and factors related to this type of violence in Iran. The cross-sectional study was conducted in 72 prehospital emergency centers affiliated with Kerman University of Medical Sciences in 2019. Using a researcher-made questionnaire, we assessed workplace violence and factors associated with this type of violence in prehospital paramedical personn

BACKGROUND: Few health care organizations have structured approaches to assimilate and analyze disruptive behavior data. In 2012, Veterans Affairs (VA) developed the Workplace Behavior Risk Assessment (WBRA), a tool that collects behavioral threat data from multiple systems, consolidates it, and tailors staff training based on the frequency and type of events.
OBJECTIVE: This paper provides an overview of the WBRA and how it can inform nurse training.
METHODS: A repeated measures design evaluated trends in workplace violence reporting and event rates across 140 VA health care systems from 20

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers across the world are subjected to increasing workplace violence, mostly arising from patient interactions. Effective workplace violence prevention programs are urgently needed, but there is limited evidence supporting such programs in nonpsychiatric inpatient units.
METHODS: This prospective interventional study evaluated the effectiveness of a workplace violence prevention program. All patients admitted or transferred to four nonpsychiatric inpatient units from November 2024 to August 2025 were included. Following a baseline observational period, Phase 1 interv

As a female-dominant profession, nurses are at risk of workplace violence. However, the health outcomes of workplace violence among female nurses have been mostly studied in isolation from their history of lifetime violence experiences. Although social and organizational factors shape workplace violence, our understanding of its effects on female nurses' health is limited in different cultural contexts. This study examined how workplace violence affects the physical and mental health and the frequency of medication intake and sick leave of nurses employed in the Saudi healthcare system while c

BACKGROUND: Type II workplace violence in health care, perpetrated by patients/clients toward home healthcare nurses, is a serious health and safety issue. A significant portion of violent incidents are not officially reported. Natural language processing can detect these "hidden cases" from clinical notes. In this study, we computed the 12-month prevalence of Type II workplace violence from home healthcare nurses' clinical notes by developing and utilizing a natural language processing system.
METHODS: Nearly 600,000 clinical visit notes from two large U.S.-based home healthcare agencies wer

The United States Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines workplace violence (WPV) as any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. OSHA recognizes that WPV ranges from threats and verbal abuse to physical assaults and even homicide. There are no OSHA standards specifically related to WPV however the General Duty Clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the OSHA Act of 1970, requires employers to provide a workplace that is free of conditions that could cause death or serious

BACKGROUND: Patient and health care worker safety is an interconnected phenomenon. To date, few studies have examined the relationship between patient and worker safety, specifically with respect to work safety culture. Therefore, we examined patient safety culture, workplace violence (WPV), and burnout in health care workers to identify whether patient safety culture factors influence worker burnout and WPV.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used secondary survey data sent to approximately 7,100 health care workers at a large academic medical center in the United States. Instruments includ

BACKGROUND: The rising rate of workplace violence in hospitals is a serious concern. While leading organisations recommend implementing interventions to address workplace violence, little is known about the workplace violence relationship between patients and visitors, and how it affects nurses' emotional exhaustion and their perceptions of patient safety.
AIMS: The study's purpose was to understand the status of workplace violence in hospitals and the relationships between nurses' experiences of workplace violence, emotional exhaustion, and perceptions of patient safety.
METHODS: This cross
