Thymoma: a clinicopathologic study based on the new World Health Organization classification.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored the relationship between the histologic subtype of thymoma according to the new World Health Organization histologic classification and the clinical findings, as well as the prognostic significance of the classification. METHODS: A total of 130 patients with thymoma, who underwent resection at the National Cancer Center Hospital, Tokyo, from 1962 to 2000, were studied retrospectively. The histologic subtype of thymoma was determined according to the new World Health Organization histologic classification. The stage was also determined according to a modified Mas

World Health Organization classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues: implications for dermatology.

The new World Health Organization (WHO) classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid malignancy represents the first worldwide consensus document on the classification of lymphoma/leukemia. Its aim is to supercede all existing classification systems, including the Revised European American Classification (REAL), and the organ-based classification of cutaneous lymphoma proposed in 1997 by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) cutaneous lymphoma project group. This article compares the REAL, EORTC, and WHO classifications with particular reference to cutaneous ly

Evaluation of children with recurrent pneumonia diagnosed by World Health Organization criteria.

BACKGROUND: A World Health Organization (WHO) case management approach has been used to identify and treat children with pneumonia worldwide since 1987. Many children are treated repeatedly: 23% of children with pneumonia in our rural Haitian district had met the WHO criteria on two or more occasions; but underlying disease in such children has not been systematically studied. METHODS: We enrolled 103 children who had been diagnosed with pneumonia on 3 or more occasions by community health workers using WHO criteria. We compared them with 138 children similarly evaluated but never diagnosed w

Histologic typing of thymoma according to the new World Health Organization classification.

The new WHO classification scheme provides a set of simple and easily reproducible morphologic criteria for an accurate and consistent categorization of thymic epithelial tumors. This scheme should facilitate interobserver reproducibility and lead to a more precise assessment of prognosis when used in combination with the staging system.

Comparison among different methods for the diagnosis of varicocele. World Health Organization.

Three noninvasive methods for the detection of retrograde blood flow in the internal spermatic vein were evaluated in 141 men complaining of infertility in four different centers. Scrotal contact thermography using flexible strips was found to be the most accurate when compared with retrograde venography of the internal spermatic vein for a final diagnosis. Doppler sonography had a higher false-positive rate, while radionuclide angiography with static imaging had a higher false-negative rate. The combination of Doppler sonography and contact thermography resulted in the highest diagnostic accu

World Health Organization's programme on the prevention of blindness.

The WHO Programme for the Prevention of Blindness was established in 1978, reflecting the need for action against the burden of avoidable blindness, which constitutes an increasingly serious socioeconomic problem in many countries. A vast majority of the world's blind live in developing countries, where unoperated cataract, trachoma, xerophthalmia and onchocerciasis are the main causes of visual loss. Thus, more than two-thirds of blindness encountered in such areas is either preventable or curable. The objectives of the WHO Programme for the Prevention of Blindness are to reduce the amount of

Mental disorder comorbidity and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in the World Health Organization World Mental Health Surveys International College Student initiative.

OBJECTIVES: Comorbidity is a common feature of mental disorders. However, needs assessment surveys focus largely on individual disorders rather than on comorbidity even though the latter is more important for predicting suicidal thoughts and behaviors. In the current report, we take a step beyond this conventional approach by presenting data on the prevalence and correlates (sociodemographic factors, college-related factors, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors) of the main multivariate profiles of common comorbid Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV disorders among st

Diabetes in adults is now a Third World problem. World Health Organization Ad Hoc Diabetes Reporting Group.

Since 1988, the World Health Organization has been collecting standardized information on the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance in adult communities worldwide. Within the age range 30 to 64 years, diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance were found to be absent or rare in some traditional communities in Melanesia, East Africa, and South America. In communities of European origin, the prevalences of diabetes and impaired glucose tolerance were in the range of 3% to 10% and 3% to 15%, respectively, but migrant Indian, Chinese, and Hispanic American groups were at high

[Public health in Franco's Spain as seen from the World Health Organization: the Brockington Report (1967)].

The aim of this note is to introduce the report on the health system of Spain written in 1967 by the WHO expert on Public Health Administration, and retired professor of the University of Manchester, Prof. CF Brockington, I summarise along general lines the relationships established between Spain and the WHO, describe the role of consultants, give an outline of the character of this author and the political context of the time. I also describe the difficulties encountered with his recommendations, which can nevertheless be viewed as seminal contributions to the major changes that were to take

Mobile health applications for the most prevalent conditions by the World Health Organization: review and analysis.

BACKGROUND: New possibilities for mHealth have arisen by means of the latest advances in mobile communications and technologies. With more than 1 billion smartphones and 100 million tablets around the world, these devices can be a valuable tool in health care management. Every aid for health care is welcome and necessary as shown by the more than 50 million estimated deaths caused by illnesses or health conditions in 2008. Some of these conditions have additional importance depending on their prevalence. OBJECTIVE: To study the existing applications for mobile devices exclusively dedicated to

Reaching the World Health Organization elimination targets for schistosomiasis: the importance of a One Health perspective.

The past three years has seen the launch of a new World Health Organization (WHO) neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) roadmap, together with revised control and elimination guidelines. Across all, there is now a clear emphasis on the need to incorporate a One Health approach, recognizing the critical links between human and animal health and the environment. Schistosomiasis, caused by Schistosoma spp. trematodes, is a NTD of global medical and veterinary importance, with over 220 million people and untold millions of livestock currently infected. Its burden remains extremely high in certain reg

New World Health Organization recommendations for care of preterm or low birth weight infants: health policy.

UNLABELLED: Approximately 11% of infants are born preterm, and complications of prematurity are the most common cause of death in children aged under five years. Almost one million preterm infants die each year across low, high and middle income countries. In 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) convened a Guideline Development Group (GDG) to examine evidence and formulate recommendations for care of preterm or low birthweight (LBW) infants according to WHO Guideline Review Committee (GRC) criteria. GRADE methods were used to assess the certainty of evidence and the GDG developed judgemen

G-Computation Quantifying Caries Reduction by World Health Organization Sugar Limits in Children.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends reducing free sugar intake (FSI) to below 10%, and ideally below 5%, of the estimated energy requirement (EER) to prevent noncommunicable diseases, including dental caries. Little progress has been made in lowering FSI to reduce early childhood caries (ECC) over the past few decades. Although sugar's impact on health is well established, no studies have quantified the extent to which reducing FSI to these thresholds would reduce decayed, missing, and filled surfaces (dmfs) scores. Data from 2,182 Australian children in the SMILE birth cohort were

Changes to the World Health Organization Classification for Pediatric Brain and Spine Tumors.

Published in 2021, the 5th edition of the World Health Organization central nervous system tumor classification introduced major changes to the categorization of pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors. Greater focus has been placed on the integration of molecular genetics, highlighting its emerging importance in the diagnosis, prognostication, and targeted therapy of these tumors. New molecularly defined tumors, reclassification of existing tumors, and revised nomenclature are discussed in this article, and subsequent articles provide further information on this new central nervous system tumo

Tracking Measles and Rubella Elimination Progress-World Health Organization African Region, 2022-2023.

Measles or rubella elimination is verified when endemic transmission of the corresponding virus has been absent for over 36 months in a defined area, in the presence of a well-performing surveillance system. This report updates the progress by 47 countries in the WHO African Region towards the goal of attaining verification of measles and rubella elimination in at least 80% of the countries of the region by 2030. We reviewed the WHO-UNICEF vaccination coverage estimates for the first and second doses of measles- and measles-rubella-containing vaccines, as well as the available coverage data fo
