Changes in the pressure distribution by wrist angle and hand position in a wrist splint.

The study was conducted to provide basic data to develop a system that distributes pressure over a broader area by measuring and analyzing pressures in various wrist angles and hand positions while wearing a wrist splint. With 0, 15, 30, and 45 degrees of wrist extension, full-finger extension and finger flexion, pressure distribution changes were measured three times. Average peak pressure was analyzed and mean value picture (MVP) in zones 3-5 was calculated. A one-way Anova was conducted to identify changes in pressure distribution by wrist angle and hand position. Mean peak pressure values

Range of movement in the wrist as a diagnostic tool in radial-sided wrist pain.

Kienböck disease is diagnosed by imaging studies, and is often difficult to diagnose in its early stages. Our clinical impression is that wrist movement is more limited in Kienböck disease than when radial-sided wrist pain is caused by other conditions. The purpose of this study was to determine the use of wrist movement in differentiating between early Kienböck disease and radial-sided sprained wrist. We retrospectively reviewed 62 cases of Kienböck disease and 49 patients with radial-sided wrist sprain. Wrist movement at presentation was recorded. The two groups differed significantly in fle

Mechanical Effects of Wrist Position at the Wrist Joint: A Finite Element Analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of wrist joint angles during flexion-extension and radioulnar deviation on stress distribution using finite element analysis. METHODS: Eight fresh-frozen upper limb specimens were analyzed using computed tomography. Finite element models were developed to simulate grip postures in flexion-extension (five positions ranging from 30° flexion to 30° extension) and radioulnar deviation (eight positions from 15° radial deviation to 20° ulnar deviation). Stress distributions (equivalent stress, minimum principal stress, and maximum principal stress)

Neuromuscular Properties of the Human Wrist Flexors as a Function of the Wrist Joint Angle.

The joint angle dependence of voluntary activation and twitch properties has been investigated for several human skeletal muscles. However, although they play a key role for hand function and possess a unique neural control compared to muscles surrounding other joint complexes, little is known about the wrist flexors innervated by the median nerve. Therefore, isometric voluntary and electrically evoked contractions of the wrist flexors were analyzed at three wrist joint angles (extension: -30°, neutral: 0°, flexion: 30°) to quantify the joint angle dependence of (i) voluntary activation (asses

Athletic injuries of the wrist and hand. Part I: traumatic injuries of the wrist.

Hand and wrist injuries in sports are some of the most common injuries reported. This review discusses briefly the causes of hand and wrist injuries in sports and discusses pertinent biomechanical findings regarding the range of motion required in different sports activities. The bulk of the review discusses specific traumatic and overuse injuries to the hand and wrist commonly seen in the athlete. Emphasis is placed on problematic traumatic injuries such as carpal scaphoid fractures and hook of the hamate fractures, as well as ligament injuries to the wrist with regard to diagnosis, treatment

Surgery for wrist osteoarthritis.

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: The primary objective is to assess the benefits and harms of partial wrist fusion compared with placebo or sham surgery in adults with non-inflammatory osteoarthritis of the wrist. Secondary objectives are to assess the benefits and harms of surgery, including but not limited to, proximal row carpectomy, total wrist arthroplasty, and wrist denervation, compared with placebo or sham surgery, any non-surgical intervention, or other type of surgery.

Extended Wrist Rotation Simplified.

Extended wrist rotation provides a simple clinical measure of rigidity in movement disorders. The supinator-pronator muscles of the forearm form an agonist-antagonist pair that can be isolated for diagnosis and monitoring. Patients rarely can isolate these muscles without extraordinary training and body awareness. Clinicians may find documenting the impact of the shoulder girdle, wrist, and hand movements overburdensome. A preliminary study shows that restricting the olecranon and keeping the wrist in line with the hand can provide a simple, reproducible measure of rigidity. We study a two-han

Wrist Injuries in Climbers.

BACKGROUND: Acute and chronic injuries to the wrist are among the most common sport-related complaints of climbing athletes but have not been extensively evaluated in this population. Therefore, it is important to categorize climbing injuries to the wrist, analyze risk factors, and assess treatment outcomes. PURPOSE: To evaluate the distribution, outcomes, and influencing factors of wrist injuries in climbers. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: Climbing athletes with wrist injuries who presented to our specialized sports medical center over the course of 4 years (2017

Complications of wrist arthroplasty.

Total wrist arthroplasty is an alternative for patients with severe wrist arthritis who have specific requirements or desires to preserve motion. However, wrist replacement has its own unique risks and potential complications, and is not appropriate for patients with high physical demands. This article discusses these risks and complications and provides strategies to minimize risks and manage complications.

Proximal wrist extensor tendinopathy.

Proximal wrist extensor tendinopathy, which is also known as tennis elbow, is pain at or just distal to the lateral humeral epicondyle within the proximal wrist extensor tendon. It occurs commonly in certain athletes but can also occur in people with jobs that require repetitive movements of the hand and upper limb. In most cases the tendon involved shows no signs of inflammation or tendonitis, but instead shows fibroblasts, vascular hyperplasia, and disorganized collagen. Diagnosis is often made by history and physical exam alone. Most people respond to conservative measures including activit

Wrist and hand ultrasound.

With adequate equipment, training, and expertise, ultrasound (US) should be regarded as the first-line imaging modality for the assessment of a wide range of pathological conditions affecting the soft tissues around the wrist and hand. With high-resolution transducers, US allows detection of foreign bodies and a reliable identification of a variety of traumatic lesions affecting tendons, retinacula and annular pulleys, ligaments, vessels, and nerves. In addition, inflammatory arthropathies, infectious disorders, overuse tendinopathies, and degenerative conditions can be diagnosed with this tec

Wrist deformities after fracture.

Wrist deformities can occur after fracture because of malunion of the fracture or injury to the growth plate leading to imbalance of growth. Prevention of malunion is paramount by early recognition with proper reduction and casting or fixation with casting. If a mal-union occurs, an osteotomy may be necessary if anticipated growth will not correct the deformity. Injury of the growth plate may lead to wrist deformity in two ways: angular growth or growth arrest. Angular growth deformities are corrected most commonly by osteotomy. Growth arrest of the radius or the ulna leads to an ulnar-positiv

Dorsal wrist syndrome repair.

Dorsal wrist pain with or without a palpable dorsal wrist ganglion is a common complaint. Watson developed the concept of the dorsal wrist syndrome (DWS) which is an entity encompassing pre-dynamic rotary subluxation of the scaphoid and the overloaded wrist. We reviewed 20 cases of DWS treated surgically. There were nine males (11 wrists) and nine females (nine wrists). Post-operative follow-up ranged from five to 67 months (mean, 37 months). At operation, we observed SLL tears in eight wrists and dorsal ganglia in 12 cases. Following surgery, 12 cases reported being pain free, five had mild p
