[Complex dislocation fracture of the wrist. Transscaphoid-translunar-transstyloid dislocation fracture].

The most common injuries of the carpus are lunate and perilunate dislocations. The authors describe a complex dislocation of the carpus associated with fractures of the scaphoid, lunate, and styloid process of the radius. The pathogenesis of this dislocation is believed to be extreme hyperextension and radial deviation of the wrist. This mechanism can cause posterior dislocation of the carpus with fracture of scaphoid and lunate.

Scaphoid (navicular) fractures of the wrist in children: attention to the impacted buckle fracture.

We retrospectively analyzed the radiographic findings in 76 patients with proven scaphoid (navicular) fractures. The purpose of the study was to determine the incidence of the impacted buckle fracture of the scaphoid bone in children. Fourteen of the 76 patients (17%) demonstrated such a fracture, and all of the fractures occurred in the middle or distal third of the scaphoid bone. The mean age of this group of patients was 13.7 years, as compared to the mean age of 15.6 years in the patients with overt transverse fractures. One out of 14 of the patients with a buckle fracture was female. None

The Impact of Wrist Fractures on Long-Term Basketball Performance.

BACKGROUND: Wrist joint fractures may present challenging obstacles for the rehabilitating athlete upon return to play. Although current literature has examined the effects of specific injuries to the upper extremity for basketball athletes, little is known about long-term performance outcomes following wrist joint fractures. METHODS: Review of all National Basketball Association players who sustained wrist joint fractures was conducted. Player characteristics, preinjury and postinjury performance, and overall efficiency were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 31 players were deemed appropriate f

Minimally angulated pediatric wrist fractures: is immobilization without manipulation enough?

BACKGROUND: Emergency department (ED) manipulation of complete minimally angulated distal radius fractures in children may not be necessary, due to the excellent remodeling potential of these fractures. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this study was to determine the proportion of minimally angulated distal radius fractures managed in the ED with plaster immobilization that subsequently required manipulation. Our secondary objective was to document, at follow-up, changes in angulation for each wrist fracture. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study reviewed consecutive records of all ch

Early wrist arthrodesis for irreparable intra-articular distal radial fractures.

When articular restoration and congruity cannot be accomplished in distal radial fractures owing to severe articular bone loss or comminution, early wrist arthrodesis should be considered. This procedure rapidly restores wrist alignment and stability and controls pain. Arthrodesis is a highly reliable and definitive procedure that optimises the opportunity for early functional and occupational recovery while minimising the risks of developing stiff digits or chronic pain in injuries otherwise doomed from the start of treatment to result in severe wrist stiffness and post-traumatic arthritis. Artificial intelligence-based method for detecting wrist fractures in children.

Pediatric wrist fractures are common skeletal injuries in clinical practice; however, due to the ongoing development of children's bones, fracture characteristics are complex and often prone to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. Moreover, traditional diagnostic methods rely heavily on the physician's experience, which may compromise efficiency and accuracy, especially in environments with limited medical resources. To address this issue, this study proposes an improved deep learning detection method based on YOLO11s, named Kid-YOLO, for the automatic detection of pediatric wrist fractures in X-

Detecting scaphoid fractures in wrist injury: a clinical decision rule.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to develop and validate an easy to use clinical decision rule, applicable in the ED that limits the number of unnecessary cast immobilizations and diagnostic follow-up in suspected scaphoid injury, without increasing the risk of missing fractures. METHODS: A prospective multicenter study was conducted that consisted of three components: (1) derivation of a clinical prediction model for detecting scaphoid fractures in adult patients following wrist trauma; (2) internal validation of the model; (3) design of a clinical decision rule. The predictors used w

Current Fixation Options for Elbow, Forearm, Wrist, and Hand Fractures.

The universal goals of upper limb fracture management are to restore anatomic alignment, establish stable fracture fixation (while preserving blood supply), and allow for early mobilization of the elbow, wrist, and digits. However, the indications for operative management and fixation constructs are specific to each fracture type. This article systematically reviews current classifications and treatment options for adult fractures of the distal humerus, radius, ulna, scaphoid, metacarpals, and phalanges. For each anatomic location, we discuss the salient imaging features to guide management de

Wrist arthroscopy in the management of articular distal radius fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the distal radius account for 15% of all fractures. The use of arthroscopy is increasingly popular in the last years, with the goal to achieve a better anatomical reduction of the articular fragments. SOURCES OF DATA: We searched the literature on Medline (PubMed), Web of Science and Scopus databases using the combined keywords 'wrist', 'distal radial fracture', 'distal radius fracture' and 'arthroscopy'. Twenty-eight studies were identified. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Coleman Methodological Score. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Arthroscopy allows to de

Wrist fractures: sensitivity of radiography, prevalence, and patterns in MDCT.

The aims of this study are to evaluate diagnostic performance of conventional radiographs for wrist fractures using multidetector computerized tomography (MDCT) as a reference standard, to determine prevalence, demographic risk factors including age and sex, and associations among various wrist fractures. A retrospective study was performed, finding a total 455 patients (457 wrists) who had wrist trauma and who had undergone a radiography and subsequent MDCT examination during a 45-month period. The MDCT and radiographs of the patients were reviewed by two radiologists, and a consensus was obt

Trends in wrist fractures in children and adolescents, 1997-2009.

PURPOSE: Distal radius and carpal fractures in children and adolescents represent approximately 25% of all pediatric fractures. Incidence rates and causes of these fractures change over time owing to changes in activities and risk factors. The purpose of this study was to examine recent population-based trends in incidence and causes of wrist fractures in children and adolescents. METHODS: We obtained data from the Dutch Injury Surveillance System of emergency department visits of 15 geographically distributed hospitals, and from the National Hospital Discharge Registry. This included a repre

Can clinical parameters predict fractures in acute pediatric wrist injuries?

OBJECTIVE: Fractures around the wrist are common in pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED). This pilot study was aimed at identifying clinical variables that are most likely to be associated with a fracture. METHODS: This was a prospective blinded case series of patients 3-18 years of age presenting with an acute (<3 days) wrist injury, without obvious deformity. A team of five investigators blinded to the eventual radiographic findings evaluated patients. Physical examination variables included range of motion (ROM), site of maximal tenderness, and functional deficit.

[Fresh fractures! Classification, management, results and problems: the wrist joint].

Carpal bone fractures are rare, with an incidence of 13% compared to that of fractures and luxations of the hand bones. Generally they are intraarticular fractures. Fracture of the scaphoid bone occurs most frequently, with an incidence of 75%. The greater number of fractures is found in the middle-third of the wrist bordering on the os lunatum. They are usually treated conservatively by splinting with a cast. Surgery is indicated only when the fracture is open, instable, dislocated or combined with carpal instabilities.

External fixators for wrist fractures: a biomechanical and clinical study.

The rigidity of four external fixators for the wrist was determined by using the Instron universal testing instrument. Using the equivalent stiffness index, the small A.O. was 7.6, the mini Hoffman was 3.7, Roger Anderson was 3.5, and Ace Colles' was 4.3. Thus, the small A.O. was about twice as rigid overall as the other three external fixators. Twenty-two patients with unstable distal radius fractures were treated with the mini Hoffman external fixator over a 3-year period; and follow-up data were obtained. The average final angle of the distal radial articular surface on the anteroposterior

The epidemiology of wrist fractures in older men: the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) study.

UNLABELLED: There is limited wrist fracture information on men. Our goal was to calculate frequency and identify risk factors for wrist fracture in the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) study. We confirmed that fracture history and certain medications are predictors, and identified novel predictors including markers of kidney function and physical performance. INTRODUCTION: To calculate the incidence of wrist fractures and their risk factors in older community-dwelling men from the US Osteoporotic Fractures in Men (MrOS) study. METHODS: Using triannual postcards, we identified incident wr

Distal radial torus fracture in an adult. A new type of occult wrist fracture?

Torus or buckle fractures typically affect children who have suffered indirect minor wrist injuries. They are axial compression-type metaphyseal fractures of cortical and cancellous bone, which are stable and their treatment therefore consists in immobilisation of the joint for three to four weeks. We present an atypical case of distal radius torus fracture in a 19-year-old adult male, which has not been previously reported in adults and can be considered a new type of occult fracture. Knowledge of this possibility is mandatory to be able to make a differential diagnosis of wrist sprain in adu

Estimating osteoporotic fracture risk following a wrist fracture: a tale of two systems.

UNLABELLED: The WHO fracture risk assessment (FRAX) and Canadian Association of Radiologists and Osteoporosis Canada (CAROC) tools can both be used to determine an individual's 10-year risk of osteoporotic fracture. However, these tools differ in their risk calculation. For participants <65 years with a wrist fracture, FRAX provides a lower fracture risk estimate than CAROC resulting in fewer decisions to initiate therapy. PURPOSE: The purpose of the current report is to compare fracture risk prediction rates using the CAROC and the FRAX® tools. METHODS: Individuals ≥50 years with a distal r
