This study uses a reversible catalytic model to estimate the age-specific rates of gain and loss of Wuchereria bancrofti infection from data collected during a control programme in Pondicherry, South India. The data describe the infection status in 1981 and 1986 of two cohorts of individuals, one living in an area where vector reduction had been achieved, and the other in a comparable endemic area. The rate of loss of infection in the absence of reinfection is estimated for the cohort in the control area, and the rate of gain of infection by the cohort in the endemic area estimated by substitu

Twelve Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, were infected with 100 third-stage larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti. One month later these animals, along with 4 control animals, were given 100 third-stage larvae of Brugia malayi. Eleven of the 12 experimental animals and the 4 controls survived, and 8 of the experimental animals and all of the controls demonstrated microfilaremia after 3 months. The animals were killed at 6-months post-infection and examined for parasites. One W. bancrofti larva was found in one of the experimental animals, and 15% of the B. malayi given were recovered as adult

Five hundred and twenty-nine sera obtained from people dwelling in an area endemic for bancroftian filariasis were analysed for the presence of soluble circulating antigens (SCA) of filarial origin by counter immunoelectrophoresis and 303 were found positive. It, therefore, appears that 57.3% subjects could be diagnosed by the detection of SCA irrespective of their clinical status. Of the three groups investigated, microfilaraemic, amicrofilaraemic and clinical, SCA could be demonstrated in maximum number of sera obtained from clinical cases. The parasite specificity of the SCA was determined

In four villages in the savannah and in the rain forest of Liberia, regular assessment of the biting activity and infection rates of anthropophilic mosquitoes have been carried out through full annual cycles. The microfilaremia rates in the localities in the savannah were 18.3% and 20.0% and in those of the forest 10.3% and 12.5%. The all-night catches were performed inside ordinary inhibited houses at monthly or fortnightly intervals. Presence of infective larvae of Wuchereria bancrofti proved Anopheles gambiae, A. funestus and A. nili to be the local vectors. Biting densities were high in th

Lymphangiectasia represents a basic phenomenon of acute and chronic pathology in lymphatic filariasis, and the prevalence or degree of lymphatic dilation caused by filarial worms is considered an indirect measurement of the altered lymphatic function. We examined the morphological alterations of intrascrotal lymphatic vessels surgically removed from a volunteer infected by adult worms of Wuchereria bancrofti. Scanning electron microscopy revealed lymphatic vessels with an irregular endothelium and adherent flattened lymphocytes and macrophages in variable proportions. On transmission electron

Bancroftian filariasis is endemic in many areas of Papua New Guinea. This study describes the entomologic indices of transmission near Dreikikir in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. A total of 1,735 culicine mosquitoes, including Culex and Mansonia species, were dissected, but none were infected with filarial larvae. In contrast, Anopheles punctulatus and An. koliensis were found to be potential vectors: 7.3% of Anopheles were infected and the mean number of first- to third-stage larvae per infected mosquito was 2.7. Transmission indices varied significantly in five villages located withi

Detection of filarial antigen in circulating immune complexes from patient sera was performed by an enzyme immunoassay in which the immune complexes were precipitated in the cold with polyethylene glycol and then dissociated in an acid pH buffer before being added to an ELISA plate. The dissociated antigen bound to the plate where it could be detected by peroxidase-labeled polyclonal rabbit antifilarial antiserum. Control sera used for defining the specificity of the assay included sera with immune complexes not related to parasite infection with and without free parasite antigen added prior t

PURPOSE: To report a case of ocular filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti manifesting as panuveitis.
DESIGN/METHODS: Observational case report.
RESULT: A 30-year-old, healthy, Asian, Indian male presented with decreased vision and panuveitis with secondary glaucoma in the right eye. Careful slit-lamp examination revealed multiple, tiny, motile larvae in the anterior chamber. Indirect ophthalmoscopy showed vitritis with plenty of vitreous membranes, and subretinal yellow lesions in the peripheral retina along with retinal pigment epithelial tracts. An aqueous tap and a peripheral blood smear

OBJECTIVE: Antigen-based rapid diagnostic tests for Lymphatic filariasis (LF) do not come with external quality control (QC) materials, and research and disease control programmes rely on stored positive samples. This study was undertaken to evaluate the use of lyophilized Wuchereria bancrofti antigen positive plasma samples to serve as QC materials for LF diagnostic tests. 10 well characterized W. bancrofti positive samples were lyophilized and stored at 4, 28 and 40 °C. The samples were evaluated using the Alere Filariasis Test Strips before lyophilization, and after 1 and 3 months of storag

A parasitological survey was conducted among children and adolescents in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Brazil to describe the occurrence and spatial distribution of lymphatic filariasis. Microfilaraemia was investigated through the thick smear technique, using 50 μl of capillary blood that was collected at night. The spatial analysis used a digital base map of the municipality, divided into districts, which were classified as hypoendemic, mesoendemic or hyperendemic. 8670 children were examined and 96 cases of microfilaraemia were identified (1.1%). The prevalence rate did not d

To assess the performance of the immunochromatographic test for filariasis, adult Wuchereria bancrofti worms were incubated under different conditions. The tests were strongly positive with incubation fluids from both living and mechanically damaged females. Negative results were observed with incubation fluids from all male worms and from intact dead females.

In the present paper, we report the results we obtained using several cytochemical techniques to analyze the infective larva of Wuchereria bancrofti. An imidazole osmium tetroxide solution was used to visualize unsaturated fatty acids. A highly contrasted material forming a continuous structure was observed on the larval surface and over the epicuticle. A strong reaction was observed on the esophagus and also on the inner secreted material. Carbohydrates containing vic-glycol groups were not observed on the cuticle of the third-stage larva of W. bancrofti submitted to the Thiéry technique. Usi

The ability of vector mosquitoes to transmit the microfilariae (mff) of Wuchereria bancrofti, especially when the levels of microfilaraemia in the humans on which the mosquitoes are feeding are very low, is very important for understanding the transmission dynamics of lymphatic filariasis. Data on the correlation between vector competence and the microfilarial load in the human host are also relevant to those trying to improve transmission models for this disease. The majority of the relevant studies have involved culicine rather than anopheline vectors. The competence of populations of Anophe
