The tracheal system of the Common Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) - A micro-CT study.

X-ray micro-CT has been used to study the tracheal system of Pre and Post hibernation Queen wasps (Vespula vulgaris) and their workers. We have compared our findings in wasps with Snodgrass's description of the tracheal system of the honeybee as characterised by anatomical dissection. Our images, whilst broadly similar, identify the tracheal system as being considerably more complex than previously suggested. One of the 30 wasps imaged had a markedly different, previously undescribed tracheal system. Since completing this study, a large micro-CT study from the American Museum of Natural Histor

Visualization and quantitation of spine deformity in zebrafish models of scoliosis by micro-computed tomography.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are increasingly used to investigate spine development, growth, and for studying the etiology of spinal deformity, such as scoliosis. Here, we present a micro-computed tomography-based pipeline for visualizing the zebrafish skeleton. We describe steps for sample preparation, imaging, data management, and processing. We then detail analysis of vertebral and spine morphology using open-source software. This protocol will be useful for scientists using zebrafish to understand spine development and disease. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, ple

L5 spondylolysis: Anatomical study comparing healed and unhealed lesions.

The anatomy and pathogenesis of spondylolysis has been widely studied; however, the microanatomy of spondylolysis of the lumbar vertebra has not been well described. Therefore, we aim to better elucidate this anatomy. Twenty dry bone specimens of healed and unhealed spondylolysis of the L5 vertebra were collected from human skeletal remains. Twelve L5 vertebrae were examples of unhealed spondylolysis and eight specimens exhibited a healed (i.e., bony fusion of the lesion) spondylolysis lesion. The specimens underwent macro and microanatomical analysis followed by CT and microCT imaging. Finall

Architecture of the bronchial tree in Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus).

We imaged the lungs of five Cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) via computed tomography (CT) and micro-computed tomography (μCT) and compared these data to the lungs of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). These data demonstrate anatomical commonalities between the lungs of P. palpebrosus and A. mississippiensis, and a few notable differences. The structural similarities are (a) a proximally narrow, distally widened, hook-shaped primary bronchus; (b) a cervical ventral bronchus that branches of the primary bronchus and immediately makes a hairpin turn toward the ape

Structural mouthpart interaction evolved already in the earliest lineages of insects.

In butterflies, bees, flies and true bugs specific mouthparts are in close contact or even fused to enable piercing, sucking or sponging of particular food sources. The common phenomenon behind these mouthpart types is a complex composed of several consecutive mouthparts which structurally interact during food uptake. The single mouthparts are thus only functional in conjunction with other adjacent mouthparts, which is fundamentally different to biting-chewing. It is, however, unclear when structural mouthpart interaction (SMI) evolved since this principle obviously occurred multiple times ind

The Cephalic Morphology of Protopselaphus-A Phylogenetic Connecting Link in Staphylinidae (Coleoptera).

The head morphology of an ethanol-preserved specimen of Protopselaphus was examined using synchrotron µCT and SEM. The morphology, including muscles, nervous system, digestive tract and glands, is described in detail for the first time. We interpret the observed external and internal features with respect to their possible phylogenetic implications, mainly focused on the groundplan of the clade Protopselaphinae + Pselaphinae, and on apomorphies of the latter group. Whereas a clade Dasycerinae + (Protopselaphinae + Pselaphinae) is still not strongly supported morphologically, the monophyly of P

The Mechanosensory Subgenual Organ Complex in the Stick Insect Bacillus rossius (Phasmatodea): Neuroanatomy and Functional Morphology.

The subgenual organ complex is an elaborate mechanosensory complex in the insect leg containing chordotonal organs. In stick and leaf insects (Phasmatodea), it includes the subgenual organ and the distal organ. This study documents the neuroanatomy and functional morphology of the subgenual organ complex in the stick insect Bacillus rossius (Bacillidae: Bacillinae) by axonal tracing and micro-computed tomography. It also considers the first report on the subgenual organ complex in stick insects that reported a relatively simple organization of the sensory organ and its nerves on the basis of h

Radiological, histological and clinical side effects of incisor trimming in rabbits.

Incisor malocclusion in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is a common clinical problem seen in general practice. Given that the growth rate is about 2 mm per week, a lack of wear quickly leads to feeding difficulties and soft tissue injuries. Therefore, pathologically elongated incisors must be shortened every three to six weeks. The goal of this study was to assess the potential adverse effects on dental and periodontal tissues associated with the three most commonly used trimming methods: nail cutter, diamond-coated cutting disc and diamond burr. The left mandibular incisor of 28 healthy New Z

[Effect of aspirin administration for the treatment of osteoporosis in ovariectomized rat model].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the therapeutic effects of aspirin on postmenopausal osteoporosis and understand its action mechanism. METHODS: Forty three-month-old female SD rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 8 each): sham group, OVX group and aspirin groups (A1, A2 & A3). The OVX and aspirin groups were ovariectomized (OVX). All rats underwent BMD (bone mineral density) scan at the time of OVX and 3 months after OVX. After the animal model of osteoporosis was established, aspirin groups were intragastrically administered at a dose of 8.93 mg×kg(-1)×d(-1) (A1), 26.79 mg×kg(-1)×d(-1) (A2) a

Another one bites the dirt: a closer look into geophagy in tadpoles of Thoropa miliaris (Spix, 1824).

Geophagy, the ingestion of earthy materials such as soil or sand, is present in different animal groups, including adult frogs and their larvae. In some species, the ingestion of sediments is an intrinsic aspect of the biology of these animals. During an investigation on aspects of the natural history and morphology of tadpoles of Thoropa miliaris (Cycloramphidae) we noticed that their intestines were filled with sediments. The first question that occurred to us involved whether ingestion was accidental or part of their behavioral repertoire. These tadpoles are found in rockfaces wetted by a s

Using Laser Scanning Microscopy to Determine Electromigration in Molybdenum Disilicide.

With increasing the current density and decreasing the size of chips electromigration becomes more and more important. Electromigration is the movement of atoms in an electrically conductive material caused by current flowing. For aluminum and copper the electromigration parameters and their dependencies have been investigated by a multitude of people and methods. For other materials, this is not the case. Electromigration experiments often use very long times to stress the lines under test in the median to failure experiments. These experiments only give surface-level information about electr

Wood-Mimicking Bio-Based Biporous Polymeric Materials with Anisotropic Tubular Macropores.

Understanding physical phenomena related to fluid flow transport in plants and especially through wood is still a major challenge for the scientific community. To this end, we have focused our attention on the design of wood-mimicking polymeric architectures through a strategy based on the double porogen templating approach which relies on the use of two distinct types of porogens, namely aligned nylon threads and a porogenic solvent, to produce macro- and nanoporosity levels, respectively. A bio-based phenolic functional monomer, i.e., vanillin methacrylate, was employed to mimic either hard

Dynamic three-dimensional pore-scale imaging of reaction in a carbonate at reservoir conditions.

Quantifying CO2 transport and average effective reaction rates in the subsurface is essential to assess the risks associated with underground carbon capture and storage. We use X-ray microtomography to investigate dynamic pore structure evolution in situ at temperatures and pressures representative of underground reservoirs and aquifers. A 4 mm diameter Ketton carbonate core is injected with CO2-saturated brine at 50 °C and 10 MPa while tomographic images are taken at 15 min intervals with a 3.8 μm spatial resolution over a period of 2(1/2) h. An approximate doubling of porosity with only a 3.

Conical shell X-ray beam tomosynthesis and micro-computed tomography for microarchitectural characterisation.

Bone quality is commonly used to diagnose bone diseases such as osteoporosis, with many studies focusing on microarchitecture for fracture prediction. In this study a bovine distal femur was imaged using both micro-computed tomography (µCT) and tomosynthesis using focal construct geometry (FCG) for comparison of microarchitectural parameters. Six regions of interest (ROIs) were compared between the two imaging modalities, with both global and adaptive methods used to binarize the images. FCG images were downsampled to the same pixel size as the µCT images. Bone morphometrics were determined us

Nanocrystal Compressive Residual Stresses: A Strategy to Strengthen the Bony Spines of Osteocytic and Anosteocytic Fish.

Bone is a living tissue in which communicating cells, osteocytes, are assumed to be vital for tissue turnover and adaptation. Interestingly however, most advanced teleost fish do not possess osteocyte-mediated porosity, prompting intriguing questions about alternative material-strategies for these bones to cope with damage. Using advanced imaging techniques, including phase-contrast enhanced (PCE) microtomography (µCT) and nanotomography (nanoCT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and diffraction (XRD) tomography, the micro- and nano-architectures of osteocytic zebrafish are compared with anosteocytic

The ectoparasitic seal louse, Echinophthirius horridus, relies on a sealed tracheal system and spiracle closing apparatus for underwater respiration.

Marine mammals host a diverse array of parasites engaged in a continuous evolutionary arms race. However, our understanding of the biology of parasitic insects associated with marine mammals, particularly their adaptations to challenging marine environments, remains limited. The seal louse, Echinophthirius horridus, which infests true seals, is one of thirteen insect species capable of enduring prolonged dives in open seas. This ectoparasite has evolved several adaptations to withstand extreme conditions, such as low oxygen levels (hypoxia), temperature fluctuations, hydrostatic pressure, and

Minute workers and large soldiers in the subterranean ant Carebara perpusilla: Musculoskeletal consequences of Haller's rule in the thorax.

Many organismal traits vary with body size, often reflecting trade-offs in the face of size-dependent constraints. For example, Haller's rule, the allometric pattern whereby smaller organisms have proportionally larger brains, can have carry-on effects on head design as the brain competes for space with other structures. Ant species with polymorphic worker castes are interesting cases for helping us understand these allometric effects. Here, we examine the effects of miniaturization on the ant power core, the mesosoma (thorax), with particular attention to how the scaling of nervous system str

Muscular loading affects the 3D structure of both the mineralized rudiment and growth plate at early stages of bone formation.

Fetal immobilization affects skeletal development and can lead to severe malformations. Still, how mechanical load affects embryonic bone formation is not fully elucidated. This study combines mechanobiology, image analysis and developmental biology, to investigate the structural effects of muscular loading on embryonic long bones. We present a novel approach involving a semi-automatic workflow, to study the spatial and temporal evolutions of both hard and soft tissues in 3D without any contrast agent at micrometrical resolution. Using high-resolution phase-contrast-enhanced X-ray synchrotron

Treatment of Focal Cartilage Defects in Minipigs with Zonal Chondrocyte/Mesenchymal Progenitor Cell Constructs.

Despite advances in cartilage repair strategies, treatment of focal chondral lesions remains an important challenge to prevent osteoarthritis. Articular cartilage is organized into several layers and lack of zonal organization of current grafts is held responsible for insufficient biomechanical and biochemical quality of repair-tissue. The aim was to develop a zonal approach for cartilage regeneration to determine whether the outcome can be improved compared to a non-zonal strategy. Hydrogel-filled polycaprolactone (PCL)-constructs with a chondrocyte-seeded upper-layer deemed to induce hyaline
