The urge for self and species preservation.

Besides sneezing, yawning, and scratching, other types of more complex behaviors can be considered urges for action, in that they are both compelling and can be overtly inhibited. Many behaviors increasing the survival rate of self and species have this instinctual (although not compulsory) nature. We feel a terrible urge to catch a newborn falling from a table, although we could choose not to do so. The hypothesis is advanced that both insula and cingulate cortex participate in social behaviors such as contagious yawning, laughing, and crying, but are not necessarily involved in the urge to c

Exploring Parakinesia Brachialis Oscitans: An Intriguing Post-Stroke Phenomenon.

Parakinesia Brachialis Oscitans (PBO) is a rare post-stroke phenomenon characterized by abnormal, involuntary movement in a paralyzed limb triggered by yawning. We present the case of a male patient, age 57 years, who was admitted with right hemiparesis, dysarthria, and facial weakness. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed an infarction in the left pons. One week following the stroke, the patient began to experience involuntary elevation of his paretic arm and, to a lesser extent, his leg, triggered specifically by yawning. Based on these observations, he was diagnosed with PBO. The chara

Paradoxical sleep deprivation in female rats alters drug-induced behaviors.

Paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) induces changes in behaviors induced by dopaminergic and cholinergic agonists, including increased aggressive behavior and stereotypy, decreased number of yawns, and shedding of bloody tears in male rats. In female rats, however, very little is known about the relationship between PSD and the effect of these drugs. The present study sought to examine this issue. As in males, PSD in females resulted in increased apomorphine-induced stereotypy, decreased pilocarpine-induced chromodacryorrhea, and hyperthermia. Unlike males, however, no apomorphine-induced aggr

Behavioural effects of the dopamine D3 receptor agonist 7-OH-DPAT in rats.

The putative selective dopamine (DA) D3 receptor agonist, 7-OH-DPAT (25-4000 micrograms kg-1), enhanced stretching-yawning and penile erection in male rats, besides respectively increasing and decreasing sedation at low (25-200 micrograms kg-1) and high (1600 and 4000 micrograms kg-1) doses and inducing stereotypy from 800 micrograms kg-1 upwards. The DA D2 antagonist, (-) eticlopride (10 and 20 micrograms kg-1), antagonized stretching-yawning and penile erection induced by a low dose of 7-OH-DPAT (50 micrograms kg-1) but not those produced by high doses (1600 and 4000 micrograms kg-1), when s

7-OH-DPAT injected into the accumbens reduces locomotion and sucrose ingestion: D3 autoreceptor-mediated effects?

7-hydroxy-N,N-di-n-propyl-2-aminotetralin (7-OH-DPAT) injected bilaterally in the nucleus accumbens (NAC) resulted in profound, noncatatonic, dose-dependent (0.3-3 mg total dose) hypolocomotion but without inducing yawning. It also decreased intake of a highly preferred 3% sucrose solution (1 microgram total dose). Systemic injection of 7-OH-DPAT (0.1-3.0 mg/kg, i.p.) similarly induced hypolocomotion while failing to induce yawning. In none of these studies did rats show any signs of hyperlocomotion or any stereotyped responses normally associated with D2 or mixed D1/D2 receptor stimulation. T

A Prolonged Time to Diagnosis Due to Misdiagnoses: A Case Report of an Atypical Presentation of Eagle Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Eagle syndrome is an unusual condition in which the styloid process (SP) becomes elongated and causes different clinical symptoms due to pressure on adjacent anatomical structures. The symptoms are non-specific and include severe throat, facial, and ear pain, or headaches. They are usually exacerbated by head rotation, swallowing, yawning, or chewing, but atypical presentations exist. It is a difficult pathology to diagnose and it can take several years before a proper diagnosis is made. CASE REPORT This report describes the case of a dental student presenting with an atypical prese

Effects of picotesla flux electromagnetic fields on dopaminergic transmission in Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome (TS), a chronic familial neuropsychiatric disorder of unknown etiology, is characterized clinically by the presence of motor and vocal tics that wax and wane in severity over the time and by the occurrence of a variety of neurobehavioral disorders. It is believed that the tics of TS result from increased dopamine (DA) activity caused by postsynaptic DA receptor supersensitivity. The synthesis and release of DA is regulated presynaptically by a specific class of DA D2 receptors, termed autoreceptors activation of which causes inhibition of DA synthesis and release. In experi

Parietal signatures of urge control in paediatric tic disorders: Hyperactivation and salience-biased coupling.

Premonitory urges (PU) are central to tic expression and guide behavioural treatment yet are difficult to measure in children using self-report because urge awareness often lags tic onset. We therefore examined neural correlates of urge control in paediatric tic disorders (TS) across natural urge conditions (blink, yawn) and tics, using an fMRI release-suppression task in 25 medication-naïve children and adolescents with TS (76% male; 7-16 years) and 25 matched typically developing control participants (76% male; 6-17 years). We compared natural urge suppression between the TS group and contro

Dopaminergic symptoms in migraine.

Migraine pain is often preceded, accompanied and followed by dopaminergic symptoms (premonitory yawning and somnolence, accompanying nausea and vomiting, postdromal somnolence, euphoria and polyuria). After reviewing evidence from pharmacological, biochemical, genetic and animal experimental studies on the relationship between dopamine and migraine, and matching these data with patients' clinical features, we postulate that migraine attacks could be characterized by an ictal dopamine release in a subject with dopamine receptor hypersensitivity due to a chronic dopaminergic deficit synergistic

Clinical neurologic assessment tool: development and testing of an instrument to index neurologic status.

The clinical neurologic assessment tool (CNA) is a 21-item instrument assessing response to verbal and tactile stimulation, ability to follow commands, muscle tone, body position, movement, chewing, and yawning in the patient with head trauma. The CNA was developed to detect subtle changes in the patients' neurologic status that may indicate transitions in the comatose state. The CNA has been extensively pilot tested. Reliability determined by using Cronbach's alpha revealed an internal consistency of 0.96. Concurrent validity testing with the Glasgow Coma Scale indicated a strong positive cor

Relationship between non-headache symptoms and right to left shunt in episodic migraine. A single-center cross-sectional study.

The relationship between right to left shunt (RLS) and non-headache symptoms (NHS) in episodic migraine is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and classification of RLS in episodic migraineurs, calculate the occurrence rate of NHS, and analyze the associations between RLS and NHS. We consecutively recruited 204 episodic migraine patients. Contrast-enhanced transcranial doppler was adopted to screen RLS. Structured questionnaire via face-to-face survey was conducted to collect clinical data. A total of 172 episodic migraineurs were included in the final analysis, of which 20

The sigh and related behaviors.

Breathing is a critical, complex, and highly integrated behavior. Normal rhythmic breathing, also referred to as eupnea, is interspersed with different breathing related behaviors. Sighing is one of such behaviors, essential for maintaining effective gas exchange by preventing the gradual collapse of alveoli in the lungs, known as atelectasis. Critical for the generation of both sighing and eupneic breathing is a region of the medulla known as the preBötzinger Complex (preBötC). Efforts are underway to identify the cellular pathways that link sighing as well as sneezing, yawning, and hiccuppin

Association of dopamine D2-like and D3 receptor function with initial sensitivity to cocaine reinforcement in male rhesus monkeys.

Identifying neurobiological characteristics that predict the development of cocaine use disorder would be of great value in prevention efforts. Because of their importance in mediating the abuse-related effects of cocaine, brain dopamine receptors are logical candidates for investigation. We analyzed data from two recently published studies that characterized availability of dopamine D2-like receptors (D2R) with [11C]raclopride PET imaging and dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) sensitivity with quinpirole-induced yawning in cocaine-naïve rhesus monkeys who subsequently acquired cocaine self-administra

Influence of sildenafil on central dopamine-mediated behaviour in male rats.

Two experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of sildenafil on spontaneous or dopamine agonist-induced behaviour in male rats. Data obtained in experiment 1 show that oral administration of the drug, at 1 mg/kg, significantly increased the occurrence of penile erections, anogenital self-grooming and homosexual mounting in grouped sexually-experienced, but not inexperienced, animals. In experiment 2, pre-treatment with sildenafil (0.5, 1 or 10 mg/kg) dose-dependently modified several behavioural signs, centrally evoked by the D2/D3 dopamine agonists, 7-OH-DPAT or B-HT 920 (both at 0.1

Parakinesia brachialis oscitans: report of three cases.

The term 'parakinesia brachialis oscitans' (PBO) was coined recently to describe cases of hemiplegia in which spontaneous yawning causes involuntary raising of the affected upper limb. The authors report three additional cases of PBO adding new phenomenological findings to the syndrome, discussing possible physiopathology of this phenomenon.

[Parakinesia brachialis oscitans].

INTRODUCTION: In some cases of hemiplegia the onset of yawning is associated with an involuntary raising of the paralyzed arm. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Four observations of this movement, which is seldom described probably because it is mostly neglected, were made in the neurology unit of the University Hospital of Poitiers. The descriptions were compared with other cases that have been published in the medical literature of the last 150 years. Cerebral imagery shows a lesion that is most often localized on the internal capsule. After comparison with experimental models in cats, it is proposed th

Prescriber Acceptability of a Direct-to-Patient Intervention for Benzodiazepine Receptor Agonist Deprescribing and Behavioural Management of Insomnia in Older Adults.

Behavioural treatments are recommended first-line for insomnia, but long-term benzodiazepine receptor agonist (BZRA) use remains common and engaging patients in a deprescribing consultation is challenging. Few deprescribing interventions directly target patients. Prescribers' support of patient-targeted interventions may facilitate their uptake. Recently assessed in the Your Answers When Needing Sleep in New Brunswick (YAWNS NB) study, Sleepwell (mysleepwell.ca) was developed as a direct-to-patient behaviour change intervention promoting BZRA deprescribing and non-pharmacological insomnia mana
