The isolated zygomatic arch fractures represent 21% of zygomatic-maxillary fractures and the falls is the main etiology. This type of fracture is easily reduced through several methods and the most used is the reduction through the surgical temporal approach of Gillies. The present patient illustrates the success treatment of a patient with isolated zygomatic arch fracture which a Foley catheter was used to stabilize the fracture reduction.

Zygomatic-maxillary (ZMC) complex fractures are a common consequence of facial trauma. In this retrospective study, we present a novel method of ZMC fracture pattern analysis, utilizing three-dimensional visualization of computed tomography (CT) images to record displacement of the malar eminence in a three-dimensional coordinate plane. The pattern of fracture was then correlated with treatment outcome. Facial CT scans were obtained from 29 patients with unilateral ZMC fractures and 30 subjects without fractures and analyzed. Briefly, displacement of the malar eminence (ME) on the fractured si

Understanding the mechanisms by which clinical signs and symptoms are produced is a prerequisite to the correct appreciation of radiographic features. Radiographs of facial trauma are no different in this respect. This paper describes the specific clinical findings associated with each displaced bony fragment of the zygomatic complex fracture. Limitation of jaw movement and flattening of the cheek are produced by depressed fractures of the temporal process or zygomatic arch; unilateral epistaxis is a result of fractures of the zygomatic process of the maxilla or the floor of the orbit; paresth

Typical associated signs and symptoms of displaced zygomatic fractures include lack of zygoma projection, diplopia, and sensory disturbances of the infraorbital nerve (ION). The aim of this article was to assess eventual associations between ION sensory disturbances and zygomatic fractures patterns. This study is based on 2 databases that have continuously recorded patients hospitalized with maxillofacial fractures in 2 Departments of Maxillofacial Surgery in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Turin, Italy between 2001 and 2010. The following data for patients surgically treated for displaced zyg

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of computer-navigated surgery and the 3-D skull models and guide plates for the treatment of unilateral delayed zygomatic fractures.
METHODS: Eleven patients with unilateral delayed zygomatic fractures were treated by computer-navigated surgery (test group) and another 12 patients were treated by 3-D skull models and guide plates as the control group. Quality of reduction was assessed by examination of postoperative axial CT scans through zygomatic arch, the malar prominence and the width of zygomatic arch were measured in both groups.
RESULTS: The differen

The present paper reviews the results obtained with different modalities of treatment employed in isolated fractures of the zygomatic complex. Seventy-three patients were re-examined with respect to infraorbital nerve function. The results obtained suggest that the incidence of hypoaesthesia of the infraorbital nerve following fracture of the zygomatic complex can be reduced if rigid fixation is applied on the infraorbital rim. The zygomatic bone is a protruding part of the human skeleton and is therefore easily affected by trauma to the facial region. The etiology and clinical appearance of f

A prospective study of was made on 100 patients with fractures of the orbital floor, the zygoma and/or midface who were surgically treated and investigated (before and 3 days, 7 days, 1 month and 6 months after surgery) with regard to their eye motility (Hess screen) and their double vision (Harms tangent screen). Stable results were obtained at least 30 days after surgery. Patients in whom early surgery was performed (within 7 days after trauma) showed better results (82% improvement) compared with those operated on in the second week after the trauma (50% improvement) or later (27% improveme

Fixation of the zygomatic arch (ZA) in zygomatic complex fractures is often avoided because traditional approaches are extensive and pose a risk to the facial nerve. The percutaneous minimal-access approach for open reduction and internal fixation of ZA offers a simple, effective alternative, while ensuring stable fixation. Unlike conventional hemicoronal or preauricular techniques, it avoids large incisions, reduces scarring, and preserves the facial nerve. Key advantages include shorter operative time, reduced hospital stay, improved cosmetic outcomes, and minimal additional equipment, makin

Literature describes variable rates of diplopia of associated with zygomatic maxillary complex (ZMC) fractures (6% to 40%). The aim of this study was to retrospectively assess the prevalence of diplopia in ZMC fracture patients, the usefulness of the orthoptic evaluation compared with the clinical finger-tracking examination, and to seek possible relations of this symptom with clinical parameters. Data of patients attending the Maxillofacial Surgery Units of the University of Messina and University of Naples "Federico II", between January 2012 and December 2022 were retrieved. Statistical anal

INTRODUCTION: The zygomaticomaxillary complex, with its intrinsically prominent convexity, is highly vulnerable to injury. In this study, we evaluated a novel combined approach to the reduction and stabilization of frontozygomatic dislocated fractures without aesthetic damage.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients (mean age, 52 years) were referred for complex frontozygomatic dislocated fractures. Five patients underwent a transconjunctival approach without canthotomy in association with a transoral maxillary approach and lateral-rim skin incision, also without canthotomy. The other five patien

Zygomatic arch reduction and fixation is a key point in the treatment of complex midface and zygomaticomaxillary fractures. High-impact frontal trauma can cause posterior displacement of zygomatic bone, with a sagittal fracture of the root of the zygomatic arch extending posteriorly to the glenoid fossa. Miniplate and screw fixation of this fracture requires a large detachment of soft tissue, thus being technically more difficult for proper fixation and increasing the risk of soft tissue damage. This report describes an operative approach for fixation of this type of fracture using an adaptati

BACKGROUND: Although closed reductions of nasal fractures and zygomatic arch fractures are considered minor procedures, improper reductions are not uncommon. Objectively evaluating reduction adequacy with imaging assistance during surgery is crucial. The authors used mobile Fluoroscan intraoperatively to assess the adequacy of closed reduction for nasal fractures and zygomatic arch fractures.
METHODS: Patients with nasal fractures or zygomatic arch fractures who underwent surgery between 2000 and 2004 were enrolled. Results were reviewed according to postoperative photographs and radiography.

Nasal bone fracture is the most common of the fractures of the facial skeleton. For centuries, these injuries have been managed with closed reduction, but because of low surgeon satisfaction rates and high revision rates, open reduction is advocated in cases involving severe deviation of the nasal dorsum associated with septal fractures. There are many surgical approaches that can be used to expose the nasal bones, but we present a case where the subciliary incision was used to reduce and fixate the fracture in a patient with combined zygomatic fractures. Owing to the abundance of other concom

PURPOSE: The healing process of isolated zygomatic arch (ZA) fractures is not well understood. This study sought to investigate and compare bony remodeling outcomes following surgical and nonsurgical management of isolated ZA fractures. Through analysis of pre- and post-treatment computed tomography (CT) scans, we aimed to quantify the degree of fracture reduction over time.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study identified subjects presenting to the emergency room with acute isolated ZA fractures between 2011 and 2021 who had both initial post injury and subsequent CT scans of the face. Inclu

PURPOSE: Intraoperative navigation to assess anatomic reduction is the general trend in maxillofacial trauma surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the closed reduction outcome of isolated zygomatic arch fractures using ultrasound compared with palpation control.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this case-and-control study, the authors identified consecutively treated patients who underwent closed reduction of isolated zygomatic arch fractures using the Volkmann reposition hook with intraoperative ultrasound. Controls were patients with the same diagnosis and surgical procedure without ultra

The Authors report on their experience of 18 patients with isolated fractures of the zygomatic arch who were treated via intraoral approach. The procedures were performed between the 2nd and 8th post-trauma day and the results obtained were evaluated via post-operative CT scan and periodic follow-up visits for six months. In describing the surgical technique, the Authors recommend that the fracture be reduced with the patient's mouth open, in order to overcome the anatomical obstacle constituted by the coronoid process of the mandible and avoid, as far as possible, external approaches and oste

Zygoma is considered the main support of the midface. Zygoma is frequently fractured owing to its prominent site on the face. Treatment of zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures can be performed through either conservative or surgical measures (closed or open reduction). The study was a cross-sectional retrospective observational investigation done at 4 hospitals in Ramadi and Baghdad cities, Iraq. This investigation covered a duration of 6 years (2016-2021). We reviewed the medical records of patients with ZCFs. The participants were divided into 2 groups according to the approach used for the

A 51-year-old female underwent four upper zygomatic dental implants (ZI) and one upper and four lower conventional implants. Immediately postoperatively, the patient had pain and diplopia upon manual elevation of the edematous eyelid. Panoramic x-ray showed a malpositioned right upper ZI, requiring removal of the right upper ZI the following day. The patient had delayed referral to ophthalmology one month later for persistent diplopia. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a right inferolateral fracture with fibrosis surrounding the inferior oblique muscle. Clini
