Profiles of the fatty acids in the plasma membrane of human brain tumors.

Several studies demonstrated that certain fatty acids have specific effects on tumor cells. n-3 series fatty acids (alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid) may suppress the carcinogenesis, whereas n-6 series fatty acids (arachidonic acid, linoleic acid) may exert tumor promoting effects. In this study, 19 patients with various brain tumors and 12 control brain tissues were studied. n-3, n-6, n-9 unsaturated fatty acids and certain saturated fatty acids levels were measured in the plasma membrane of tumor or control brain tissues by capillary gas chromatography. Impact of dietary n-3 FA deficiency on rat bone tissue FA composition.

The effect of dietary n-3 FA deficiency on bone tissue FA composition was evaluated in growing rats. Two mixtures combining hydrogenated coconut oil with safflower oil served as the n-3-deficient dietary treatments and provided two levels of linoleic acid (LA). The n-3 treatments were formulated with added alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) from flaxseed oil (diet LNA) or LNA plus DHA, and both were balanced for LA. This study showed that bone is sensitive to changes in dietary n-3 FA and that DHA is more effective than LNA in maintaining DHA levels in these tissues.

Untargeted Metabolomic Analysis of the Effects and Mechanism of Nuciferine Treatment on Rats With Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Metabolomic analysis has been used to characterize the effects and mechanisms of drugs for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) at the metabolic level. Nuciferine is an active component derived from folium nelumbinis and has been demonstrated to have beneficial effects on a high-fat diet (HFD) induced hepatic steatosis model. However, the effect of the altered metabolites of nuciferine on NAFLD has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we established a NAFLD rat model using HFD and treated with nuciferine. The lipid content levels, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress were in

AIBP Regulates Metabolism of Ketone and Lipids but Not Mitochondrial Respiration.

Accumulating evidence indicates that the APOA1 binding protein (AIBP)-a secreted protein-plays a profound role in lipid metabolism. Interestingly, AIBP also functions as an NAD(P)H-hydrate epimerase to catalyze the interconversion of NAD(P)H hydrate [NAD(P)HX] epimers and is renamed as NAXE. Thus, we call it NAXE hereafter. We investigated its role in NAD(P)H-involved metabolism in murine cardiomyocytes, focusing on the metabolism of hexose, lipids, and amino acids as well as mitochondrial redox function. Unbiased metabolite profiling of cardiac tissue shows that NAXE knockout markedly upregul

Association Between Circulating Fatty Acids and Blood Pressure: A Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: High blood pressure (BP) or hypertension (HTN) remains key risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Circulating fatty acids (FAs) in the blood can affect directly cardiovascular hemodynamics and serves as building blocks for endocrine mediators modifying inflammatory processes and vascular function. This review aims to describe optimal circulating FA profiles for BP to adjust dietary recommendations for HTN prevention. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent research highlights the critical role of FAs in regulating inflammation and vascular function. Different FAs have varying effec

Association between maternal obesity, essential fatty acids and biomarkers of fetal liver function.

Maternal obesity and the imbalance in linoleic acid (C18:2 n-6, LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3 n-3, ALA) levels are related with hepatic disturbances in the offspring. However, whether these alterations are present during fetal life is not well understood. Obese and normal weight pregnant women were recruited to determine fatty acids (FAs) consumption, FAs profile (in maternal erythrocytes, placenta and neonatal very low-density lipoproteins VLDL) and biomarkers of fetal liver function, such as gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and albumin, in umbilical cord blood.

Changes in plasma fatty acid composition in females with lipedema following low-carbohydrate vs low-fat diets and associations with pain reduction.

BACKGROUND: Lipedema is a chronic female disease characterized by a painful accumulation of adipose tissue in the limbs. Plasma fatty acid (FA) composition has been proposed as a potential modulator of pain. However, the pathophysiology behind lipedema pain remains uncertain. The primary objective of this secondary analysis was to compare changes in plasma concentrations of FAs between low-energy diets either low in carbohydrates or low in fat, in females with lipedema and obesity. A secondary objective was to investigate potential associations between changes in pain and changes in the concen

Separation of triacylglycerols and free fatty acids in microalgal lipids by solid-phase extraction for separate fatty acid profiling analysis by gas chromatography.

Microalgal lipids were separated into two fractions, triacylglycerols (TAGs) and free fatty acids (FFAs), by solid-phase extraction employing sodium carbonate as the sorbent and dichloromethane (20% by volume) in n-hexane as the extracting solvent. The TAG fraction was then saponified, followed by acidification, extraction and tert-butyldimethylsilyl esterification. The FFA fraction was directly acidified, extracted and derivatized. From the lipid extracts of eight microalgal species examined, a total of 13 fatty acids were detected in the TAG fractions and nine were found in the FFA fractions

Different changes of n-6 and n-3 fatty acids in adipose tissue from spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive rats after diets supplemented with linolenic or eicosapentaenoic acids.

In spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive rats of the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) and Wistar-Schönwalde (WSCHOE) strain, diets supplemented with n-3 fatty acids of different chain length (alpha-linolenic acid, LNA--C 18:3, n-3 with linseed oil and eicosapentaenoic acid, EPA--C 20:5, n-3 with cod liver oil) were fed over a period of 22 weeks. After the LNA-rich diet, among the long-chain n-3 fatty acids EPA in epididymal adipose tissue remained unchanged, whereas docosapentaenoic (DPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA) fell. The n-6 fatty acids linoleic (LA) and arachidonic acid (AA) both appea
