Altered Gut Microbiota Mediates the Association between APOE Genotype and Amyloid-β Accumulation in Middle-Aged Adults.

IMPORTANCE: The apolipoprotein E ( APOE ) ε4 allele is the strongest genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), yet the mechanisms linking APOE to amyloid-β (Aβ) pathology remain incompletely understood. Emerging evidence suggests that the gut microbiome may modulate neurodegeneration; however, its role as a mediator in the APOE-Aβ relationship remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether specific microbial taxa mediate APOE-related effects on brain Aβ burden in an established population-based study of middle-aged adults. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study

Effects of supplementation of garlic with apple pomace or blackcurrant on the gastrointestinal microbial ecosystem of organic pigs after weaning.

Weaning stress compromises piglet immune and digestive development, increasing susceptibility to Escherichia coli (ETEC) infections. We have previously shown that combinations of antibacterial plants alleviate postweaning diarrhea caused by ETEC. Here, we evaluated the effect of feeding garlic combined with either apple pomace or blackcurrant on the gastrointestinal microbial ecosystem of organic weaners three weeks after an ETEC challenge at weaning. The study involved two blocks of 32 pigs (7 weeks; 20 kg BW) per block housed in pairs. The pairs were randomly assigned to four treatments: non

Gut microbiota in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: an individual based analysis of publicly available data.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) represents a prevalent endocrine disorder affecting numerous females worldwide. Dysbiosis of gut microbiota has been linked to the occurrence of PCOS; however, research into the characteristics of gut microbiota in PCOS patients, especially those from different regions and with different testosterone level, remains limited. Additionally, it is still unclear whether gut microbiota helps to distinguish different PCOS subtypes. METHODS: We searched four electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov) from Jan 1,

Crohn's disease in endoscopic remission, obesity, and cases of high genetic risk demonstrates overlapping shifts in the colonic mucosal-luminal interface microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease (CD) patients demonstrate distinct intestinal microbial compositions and metabolic characteristics compared to unaffected controls. However, the impact of inflammation and underlying genetic risk on these microbial profiles and their relationship to disease phenotype are unclear. We used lavage sampling to characterize the colonic mucosal-luminal interface (MLI) microbiome of CD patients in endoscopic remission and unaffected controls relative to obesity, disease genetics, and phenotype. METHODS: Cecum and sigmoid colon were sampled from 110 non-CD controls undergo

Xylanase Supplementation Modulates the Microbiota of the Large Intestine of Pigs Fed Corn-Based Fiber by Means of a Stimbiotic Mechanism of Action.

This research tested the hypothesis that xylanase modulates microbial communities within the large intestine of growing pigs fed corn-based fiber through a stimbiotic mechanism(s) of action (MOA). Sixty gilts were blocked by initial body weight, individually housed, and randomly assigned to one of four dietary treatments (n = 15): a low-fiber (LF) control, a high-fiber (HF) control containing 30% corn bran, HF+100 mg/kg xylanase (HF+XY), and HF+50 mg/kg arabinoxylan-oligosaccharide (HF+AX). Pigs were fed dietary treatments for 46 days. On day 46, pigs were euthanized, and mucosa and lumen cont

Feeding Pre-weaned Calves With Waste Milk Containing Antibiotic Residues Is Related to a Higher Incidence of Diarrhea and Alterations in the Fecal Microbiota.

The cows receiving antibiotics for intra-mammary infection (IMI) produce milk that cannot be marketed. This is considered waste milk (WM), and a convenient option for farmers is using it as calf food. However, adding to the risk of selecting resistant bacteria, residual antibiotics might interfere with the gut microbiome development and influence gastrointestinal health. We assessed the longitudinal effect of unpasteurized WM containing residual cefalexin on calf intestinal health and fecal microbiota in an 8-week trial. After 3 days of colostrum, six calves received WM and six calves received

Characterization of Metagenomes in Urban Aquatic Compartments Reveals High Prevalence of Clinically Relevant Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Wastewaters.

The dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating problem and a threat to public health. Comparative metagenomics was used to investigate the occurrence of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in wastewater and urban surface water environments in Singapore. Hospital and municipal wastewater (n = 6) were found to have higher diversity and average abundance of ARGs (303 ARG subtypes, 197,816 x/Gb) compared to treated wastewater effluent (n = 2, 58 ARG subtypes, 2,692 x/Gb) and surface water (n = 5, 35 subtypes, 7,985 x/Gb). Chestnut-quebracho tannins shape the fecal metabolome of weaned pigs through microbiota-dependent urolithin production.

BACKGROUND: Chestnut and quebracho tannins may support gut health in weaned piglets, but their efficacy likely depends on farm environment and microbial capacity to convert tannins into bioactive metabolites. This study evaluated the effects of a blend of chestnut-derived hydrolysable tannins and quebracho-derived condensed tannins on growth performance, diarrhea occurrence, gut metagenome, and fecal metabolome in piglets reared under two commercial farm conditions. A total of 160 weaned piglets (initial body weight 6.53 ± 0.13 kg) were assigned to a 2 × 2 factorial design comprising 2 weaning

Gut microbiota characteristics of gastric cancer patients across distinct pathological stages and their associations with tumor and paratumor mucosal microbiota.

Gastric cancer (GC) is closely associated with microbial dysbiosis; however, the spatial-temporal characteristics of the gut, paracancerous, and intratumoral microbiomes, as well as their interrelationships during tumor progression, remain insufficiently defined. This study aimed to characterize these microbiomes in 85 GC patients from Northwest China using shotgun metagenomic sequencing and functional annotation. Clinical samples included feces, tumor tissues, and paratumor mucosal tissues (≥5 cm from the tumor margin), enabling comprehensive profiling of microbial composition at the phylum,
