IMPORTANCE: Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies among women globally, with significant implications for reproductive health, including the use of contraception. The intersection of breast cancer and contraception presents unique challenges due to concerns about cancer recurrence, patient safety, and hormonal roles in cancer. The hormonal sensitivity of many breast cancers creates a complex approach to safe contraceptive options for patients. However, recent studies highlight the nuanced role of low-dose and nonestrogenic hormonal options, such as progestin-only methods, while

The Thromboembolism Risk with Combined Hormonal Contraceptives: Current Status and Prescribing Practice Abstract. The use of combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC) increases not only the risk for venous thromboembolism, but also for arterial thromboembolism. The risk for thromboembolism is the same for non-oral CHC (patches, vaginal rings) as for oral CHC. Risk factors such as age >35, obesity, smoking and a positive family history need to be recognized and considered in contraceptive counselling. Elaborate information concerning risks and benefits is mandatory. This applies to first-time as w

"U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use" (U.S. MEC) 2016 provides evidence-based guidance for the safe use of contraceptive methods among U.S. women with certain characteristics or medical conditions (1). The U.S. MEC is adapted from global guidance from the World Health Organization (WHO) and kept up to date through continual review of published literature (1). CDC recently evaluated the evidence and the updated WHO guidance on the risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) acquisition among women using hormonal contraception and intrauterine devices (IUDs) (2). BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess adolescent (aged 14-18 years) and young adult (aged 19-24 years) women's knowledge of and attitudes toward intrauterine devices (IUDs) before and after a brief educational intervention.
STUDY DESIGN: We administered a 43-item survey to 144 women aged 14-24 years, with half in each age category. The survey assessed knowledge of and attitudes toward IUDs, and incorporated a 3-min educational intervention about IUDs. Predictors for knowledge of and attitudes toward the IUD were examined using logistic regression.
RESULTS: Forty percent of participants had

OBJECTIVES: Management of pregnancies of unknown location (PUL) relies on close monitoring with serial human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) measurements and repeated ultrasound examinations to exclude ectopic pregnancy (EP). Although safe, this strategy leads to multiple consultations and significant organizational and economic burden. This paper aims to develop and preliminarily validate a simplified clinical algorithm to stratify the risk of EP in women presenting with PUL, in order to adapt follow-up frequency.
METHODS: The prospective monocentric OPTIGLI study was conducted at Nantes Univer

INTRODUCTION: The study aimed to assess the level of awareness and knowledge of contraception among women in Singapore, and identify the factors that influence contraception choice.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 259 female patients, aged 21-49 years, who attended the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic at National University Hospital, Singapore. An original questionnaire on nine contraceptive methods was used. Respondents who had ≥ 2 correct answers for a method (out of four questions) were considered to have good knowledge of the method. Participants were asked to rate fact

OBJECTIVE: Systematically assess from the literature whether women living with HIV who use hormonal contraception are at increased risk of HIV-disease progression compared with those who do not use hormonal contraception.
METHODS: We searched PUBMED and EMBASE for articles published in peer-reviewed journals through December 15, 2011 for evidence relevant to all hormonal contraceptive methods and HIV-disease progression.
RESULTS: Twelve reports of 11 studies met inclusion criteria. One randomized controlled trial (RCT) found increased risk for the composite outcome of a reduced CD4 cell coun

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine device (IUD) insertion during menses may be viewed as preferable by some providers, as it provides reassurance that the woman is not pregnant. However, this practice may result in unnecessary inconvenience and cost to women. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the evidence for the effect of inserting IUDs on different days of the menstrual cycle on contraceptive continuation, effectiveness and safety.
STUDY DESIGN: We searched the MEDLINE database for peer-reviewed articles published in any language from database inception through March 2012 concern

Patients using an intrauterine device (IUD) who require a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) for cervical dysplasia have traditionally had the IUD removed prior to the procedure. The only other options have been methods that lead to suboptimal sampling or risk cutting the strings. Our study suggests a procedure for performing the LEEP without removing the IUD, and review of the literature suggests that this method has not been reported before. The LEEP is performed using a conization electrode or a cone biopsy excisor. After noting that the IUD strings are of adequate length, a 0-p

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread use of highly effective contraceptive methods in France, one in every three pregnancies is unintended. Among women experiencing an unintended pregnancy leading to an abortion, half had changed their contraceptive method in the 6 months preceding the abortion, in most cases switching to a less-effective method or to no method at all. This study provides estimates of method-specific contraceptive discontinuation rates for any reason and for method-related reasons among French women.
METHODS: The data were drawn from the COCON survey (2000-2004), a population-b

BACKGROUND: More than 15 million women, many of reproductive age, were infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) at the end of 2007. As the HIV epidemic evolves, heterosexual intercourse is increasingly risky: the risk of infection in exposed young women is 4- to 7-fold higher than in young men and nearly half a million newborns annually have HIV. This review aims to show the effect of contraceptive choices on risk of HIV and on the course of disease in women with HIV.
METHODS: Relevant citations were selected by agreement between the authors after a search of MEDLINE using the terms H
