Neurotological studies upon intoxication by organic mercury compounds.

In 1965, a strange illness, which afterwards was diagnosed as the intoxication caused by organic mercury compounds, began to affect the inhabitants of the riverside areas of the Aganogawa River, Niigata, Japan. The authors have investigated the neurotological disturbances, which occurred in 144 cases intoxicated with organic mercurials. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) Recruitment (in SISI and other tests) was negative in all the cases except for 32 with inner ear deafness, and Békèsy's AUDIOMETRY (TTS) showed type II: unsettled wide amplitude in 17 cases and severe abnormal

Solvent-tailored Pd3P0.95 nano catalyst for amide-nitrile inter-conversion, the hydration of nitriles and transfer hydrogenation of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond.

For the first time, a one pot thermolysis of [Pd(PPh3)2Cl2] prepared by reacting Ph3P with PdCl2 in a 2 : 1 molar ratio in MeOH at 280 °C in a trioctylphosphine (TOP) and oleylamine(OA)-octadecane(ODE) mixture (1 : 1) was used to prepare quantum dots (QDs; size ∼2-3 nm) and nanoparticles (NPs; size ∼13-14 nm), respectively, of composition Pd3P0.95. TEM, SEM-EDX, powder-XRD and XPS (for QDs only) were used to authenticate the two nanophases. 31P{1H}NMR experiments performed to monitor the progress of thermolysis reactions revealed that the phosphorus present in the Pd3P0.95 QDs had come from TO

Fish advisories in the USA and Japan: risk communication and public awareness of a common idea with different backgrounds.

Some countries have established fish advisories to manage fish consumption to minimize methylmercury exposure. Our objective was to compare the fish advisories and the resultant consumer behavior in the United States of America (USA) and Japan. Both countries have national consumption guidelines, but American states enjoy greater independence in issuing guidelines for local water bodies and vary in the information that is provided for the public. The proportion of the American public that has heard of state fish advisories is thought to be close to 30%. There is a concern that this low level o

Environmental mercury release, special education rates, and autism disorder: an ecological study of Texas.

The association between environmentally released mercury, special education and autism rates in Texas was investigated using data from the Texas Education Department and the United States Environmental Protection Agency. A Poisson regression analysis adjusted for school district population size, economic and demographic factors was used. There was a significant increase in the rates of special education students and autism rates associated with increases in environmentally released mercury. On average, for each 1,000 lb of environmentally released mercury, there was a 43% increase in the rate

Social factors associated with psychological distress among inhabitants in a methyl-mercury polluted area in rural Japan.

Little attention has been paid to the mental health of inhabitants of methylmercury-polluted areas in Japan. This study examined the relationship between one's experience with Minamata disease (MD) (such as compensation issues) and psychological distress. The subjects were 133 (44.2%) of the 301 inhabitants over the age of 40 years living in two fishing village districts along the coast of the Yatsushiro Sea which had been contaminated with methylmercury. Data on the inhabitants' experience with MD, social network factor, health condition and mental health were obtained using questionnaires in

Association between methylmercury exposure from fish consumption and child development at five and a half years of age in the Seychelles Child Development Study: an evaluation of nonlinear relationships.

Studies to date of the developmental effects of pre- and postnatal methylmercury exposure from fish consumption in the Seychelles Islands, using linear regression models for analysis, have not shown adverse effects on neurodevelopmental test scores. In this study we evaluated whether nonlinear effects of methylmercury exposure were present, using scores on six tests administered to cohort children in the Seychelles Child Development Study at 66 months of age. Prenatal exposure was determined by measuring mercury in a segment of maternal scalp hair representing growth during pregnancy. Postnata

Systemic reactions to topically applied drugs.

Topical drugs can be absorbed percutaneously in sufficient amounts to cause untoward systemic effects. Generally speaking, infants and young children appears to be more vulnerable than adults. It has been shown that the prolonged and extensive use of topical corticosteroids can induce iatrogenic hypercorticism and that they may also impair the patients ability to cope with stress. Furthermore, the relatively limited use, areawise and timewise, of agents such as phenol, resorcinol, salicylic acid, hexachlorophene, boric acid, mercurials, and podophyllin may suffice to elicit dire systemic react

Probabilistic assessment of health risks of methylmercury from burning coal.

This paper describes a probabilistic assessment of neurological risks incurred from consuming fish containing methylmercury (MeHg), focusing on the incremental effects of Hg deposited from local coal combustion. A Monte Carlo model is used to simulate a "worst case" scenario in which a population of 5000 fish eaters in the upper midwestern United States derive the freshwater fish portion of their diet from local waters near a hypothetical large coal-fired power plant. This population is characterized by distributions of body mass, half-life of MeHg, and the ratios of blood to body burden and h

Long-term exposure to methylmercury and psychiatric symptoms in residents of Minamata, Japan.

INTRODUCTION: It is well-known that prenatal or postnatal exposure to methylmercury can produce neurological signs in adults and children, exemplified by a case of large-scale poisoning in Minamata, Japan, in the 1950s. However, evidence regarding whether pre- or postnatal exposure to methylmercury causes psychiatric symptoms (e.g., impairment of intelligence and mood and behavioral dysfunction) is still limited-excluding cases of fetal Minamata disease patients. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of pre- or postnatal exposure to methylmercury on psychiatric symptoms using data derived from a

Dietary selenium protects against selected signs of aging and methylmercury exposure.

Acute or short-term exposure to high doses of methylmercury (MeHg) causes a well-characterized syndrome that includes sensory and motor deficits. The environmental threat from MeHg, however, comes from chronic, low-level exposure, the consequences of which are poorly understood. Selenium (Se), an essential nutrient, both increases deposition of mercury (Hg) in neurons and mitigates some of MeHg's neurotoxicity in the short term, but it is unclear whether this deposition produces long-term adverse consequences. To investigate these issues, adult Long-Evans rats were fed a diet containing 0.06 o

Long-term exposure to methylmercury and neurologic signs in Minamata and neighboring communities.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that large-scale poisonings caused by methylmercury occurred in Japan (Minamata, in the 1950s) and Iraq. However, in contrast to Iraq, there have been few sound epidemiologic studies in Minamata. We evaluated the effect of methylmercury on neurologic signs using data from a 1971 population-based study. METHODS: Villages in 3 areas were selected for study: the Minamata area (a high-exposure area), the Goshonoura area (a medium-exposure area), and the Ariake area (a low-exposure area). We used place of residence as the exposure indicator. We examined associations be

Accidental intrathecal mercury application.

The authors present a case of accidental intrathecal mercury application. A 69-year-old white woman was admitted to our department with suspected meningitis following surgery for spinal stenosis at another hospital. Postoperatively, she had developed a cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) fistula with a subcutaneous cavity. Local wound irritation had been suspected and, unfortunately, mercury-containing disinfectant was injected into the cavity. Within 24 h the patient demonstrated acute neurological deterioration due to meningitis and encephalitis and was admitted to our clinic with suspected meningiti

[Incidence of Minamata disease in communities along the Agano river, Niigata, Japan--patterns of the exposure and official diagnosis of patients].

Data obtained from all residents, who lived in the Agano river villages where Minamata disease occurred as of June 1965, were used to analyze its incidence patterns and to evaluate validity of the official recognition of the disease. The residents totaled 18,253 (8,911 males and 9,342 females), including 262 (151 males and 111 females) recognized patients and 378 (186 males and 192 females) rejected applicants. Consumption of the contaminated river fish was associated with hair Hg measurements (ppm), but there were few residents who denied the consumption but showed elevated Hg values, probabl

Polymorphisms in glutathione-related genes modify mercury concentrations and antioxidant status in subjects environmentally exposed to methylmercury.

Methylmercury (MeHg) toxicity may vary widely despite similar levels of exposure. This is hypothetically related to genetic differences in enzymes metabolizing MeHg. MeHg causes oxidative stress in experimental models but little is known about its effects on humans. The aims of the present study was to evaluate the effects of polymorphisms in glutathione (GSH)-related genes (GSTM1, GSTT1, GSTP1 and GCLM) on Hg concentrations in blood and hair, as well as MeHg-related effects on catalase (CAT) and glutathione-peroxidase (GPx) activity and GSH concentrations. Study subjects were from an Amazonia

Estimation of health effects of prenatal methylmercury exposure using structural equation models.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies in epidemiology always involve concerns regarding validity, especially measurement error, confounding, missing data, and other problems that may affect the study outcomes. Widely used standard statistical techniques, such as multiple regression analysis, may to some extent adjust for these shortcomings. However, structural equations may incorporate most of these considerations, thereby providing overall adjusted estimations of associations. This approach was used in a large epidemiological data set from a prospective study of developmental methyl-mercury toxic

Toxins and tradition: the impact of food-chain contamination on the Inuit of northern Quebec.

The dependence of Quebec Inuit on their traditional diet, known as "country food," is complicated by the presence of toxins in the northern food chain. Dr. Eric Dewailly's unexpected finding of high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Inuit women's breast milk prompted years of research into this troubling public health issue. In his recent study of heavy-metal contaminants Dewailly found that mercury and organic chlorine compounds such as PCBs were the major toxins in Inuit blood samples. Although not present at levels high enough to endanger adults, these contaminants may have adve

Principles of studying low-level neurotoxic exposures in children: using the Seychelles Child Development Study of methyl mercury as a prototype.

Epidemiological studies to determine the impact of low level toxic exposure on child development are important in guiding clinical and public health action. However, carrying out such studies and interpreting their findings presents a number of significant challenges to the investigators. First, they must find a cohort with suitable exposure, select a biomarker that will accurately determine the level of exposure and determine the endpoints that are most likely to detect subtle differences in neurodevelopment. Following that, the logistics of the study must be organised and collaboration estab
