Reduction of oxytocin plasma levels in borderline personality disorder and normalization induced by psychotherapies.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsive behaviors, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Despite the poor understanding of the underlying biological processes, the oxytocin (OXT) system may be involved in and mediate some of BPD's symptomatic and behavioral aspects. To clarify OXT's role in BPD, we assessed its plasma levels and modulations induced by psychotherapies in patients. METHODS: Fifty BPD patients and 28 healthy controls (HC) participated in the study; patients were randomly assigned

Applying theory to practice in a large research center: creating and implementing tools for building convergence capacity in individuals and teams.

The continued expansion of team science underscores the urgent need for shared, actionable models that can be validated to support effective interdisciplinary collaboration in scientific teams. This paper presents a practice-grounded framework for building convergence capacity in large, multi-institutional research environments, drawing on insights from the Science of Team Science (SciTS) and Integration and Implementation Sciences (I2S). Using the U.S. NSF-funded Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability (STEPS) Center as a case study, we explore how integration expertise can be

Self-concept and Narrative Identity in Youth at Clinical High Risk for Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Disturbances of the narrative self and personal identity accompany the onset of psychotic disorders in late adolescence and early adulthood (a formative developmental stage for self-concept and personal narratives). However, these issues have primarily been studied retrospectively after illness onset, limiting any inferences about their developmental course. STUDY DESIGN: Youth at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR) (n = 49) and matched healthy comparison youth (n = 52) completed a life story interview (including self-defining memory, turning point, life challeng

Uncertainties of healthcare professionals and informal caregivers in rare diseases: A systematic review.

Uncertainties, defined as metacognitive awareness of ignorance, are an essential part of medicine. Consequently, healthcare professionals (HCPs) as well as informal caregivers face them inevitably. Depending on the interpretation of uncertainties and the existence of available resources to cope with them, uncertainties might have serious consequences. Studies showed higher burnout-rates and reduced psychosocial well-being of HCPs and informal caregivers. Especially rare diseases are linked with a variety of uncertainties, as knowledge about specific diseases is often limited which might result

The Attention Training Technique Reduces Anxiety and Depression in Patients With Coronary Heart Disease: A Pilot Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depression and anxiety symptoms are highly prevalent in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients and associated with poor outcome. Most psychological treatments have shown limited effectiveness on anxiety and depression in these patients. This study evaluates the feasibility of the attention training technique (ATT) in CHD patients with symptoms of anxiety and/or depression. METHODS: Five consecutive CHD patients with significant depression and anxiety symptoms with Hospital Anxiety and Depression rating scale (HADS) -anxiety or -depression subscale score > 8 received

Children Who Experience Unintentional Injuries: Their Functional Profiles.

Unintentional injuries are accidents that pose a major health problem among school children. This study compared the functional behavior and executive function characteristics of school-aged children who experienced unintentional injuries with those of controls who had not been injured. We investigated the background characteristics of injured children, injury characteristics, and parents' perceptions of the children's functional behaviors and executive function abilities. The study included 53 children aged 6 years to 18 years. Of them, 32 had experienced unintentional injuries. The 21 childr

App-based Mindfulness Training for Adolescent Rumination: Predictors of Immediate and Cumulative Benefit.

OBJECTIVES: Rumination is a transdiagnostic risk factor for depression and anxiety, which surge during the adolescent years. Mindfulness training - with its emphasis on metacognitive awareness and present-moment attention - may be effective at reducing rumination. Mindfulness apps offer a convenient, engaging, and cost-effective means for accessing mindfulness training for teens. Despite their increasing popularity among adolescents, no study to date has investigated which teens are well-suited to app-based mindfulness training. METHODS: Eighty adolescents (M age = 14.01 years, 45% girls) wit

Emotion Regulation Processes Can Benefit Self-Regulated Learning in Classical Musicians.

Self-regulated learning (SRL) is the degree to which students are metacognitively, motivationally, and behaviourally active participants in their own learning process. It involves the self-regulation of cognitive, behavioural, and affective processes. SRL holds significant potential for enhancing practise and achievement. Although affect is acknowledged as one of the three fundamental processes in SRL, there is limited research investigating it. However, emotions have been found to influence SRL efficiency while emotion regulation (ER) can impact learning outcomes. Thus, this study sought to i

A randomized waitlist-controlled trial comparing detached mindfulness and cognitive restructuring in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Whereas research has demonstrated the efficacy of cognitive restructuring (CR) for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little is known about the efficacy of specific metacognitive interventions such as detached mindfulness (DM). Therefore, this study compared the efficacy of CR and DM as stand-alone interventions. DESIGN: We conducted a randomized waitlist-controlled trial. n = 43 participants were randomly assigned to either DM or CR. Out of those participants, n = 21 participants had been previously assigned to a two-week waitlist condition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In both condi

Distinct Functional Connectivities Predict Clinical Response with Emotion Regulation Therapy.

Despite the success of available medical and psychosocial treatments, a sizable subgroup of individuals with commonly co-occurring disorders, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD), fail to make sufficient treatment gains thereby prolonging their deficits in life functioning and satisfaction. Clinically, these patients often display temperamental features reflecting heightened sensitivity to underlying motivational systems related to threat/safety and reward/loss (e.g., somatic anxiety) as well as inordinate negative self-referential processing (e.g., worry, rum

Dissociative identity disorder: An empirical overview.

OBJECTIVE: Despite its long and auspicious place in the history of psychiatry, dissociative identity disorder (DID) has been associated with controversy. This paper aims to examine the empirical data related to DID and outline the contextual challenges to its scientific investigation. METHODS: The overview is limited to DID-specific research in which one or more of the following conditions are met: (i) a sample of participants with DID was systematically investigated, (ii) psychometrically-sound measures were utilised, (iii) comparisons were made with other samples, (iv) DID was differentiate

Whole-Brain Deactivations Precede Uninduced Mind-Blanking Reports.

Mind-blanking (MB) is termed as the inability to report our immediate-past mental content. In contrast to mental states with reportable content, such as mind-wandering or sensory perceptions, the neural correlates of MB started getting elucidated only recently. A notable particularity that pertains to MB studies is the way MB is instructed for reporting, like by deliberately asking participants to "empty their minds." Such instructions were shown to induce fMRI activations in frontal brain regions, typically associated with metacognition and self-evaluative processes, suggesting that MB may be

Task Engagement in Matrix Reasoning Performance: A Cross-Cultural Investigation in China and the United Kingdom.

Matrix reasoning tasks remain among the most widely used instruments for assessing abstract reasoning and are often assumed to be culturally neutral. However, this assumption has been challenged by studies reporting significant cross-cultural variation in performance on nonverbal matrix reasoning tasks, even when groups show comparable performance on verbal measures of general cognitive ability. One plausible reason is that many matrix reasoning tasks rely primarily on accuracy-based performance metrics while providing limited insight into response timing and task engagement during problem sol

Associations of environmental tobacco smoke with ADHD and executive function in early adulthood: results from a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Secondhand smoke (SHS) and thirdhand smoke (THS) have been shown to increase the risk of physical health and mental health. However, the impact of SHS and THS exposure on ADHD symptoms and executive function remain to be elucidated. METHODS: Online surveys were used to recruit participants at a Chinese vocational college. The frequency of contact with smokers or detecting tobacco odors in residential environments was used to define SHS exposure, whereas the frequency of contact with surfaces contaminated by smokers was used to define THS exposure. The associations of SHS and THS e

Randomness as a behavioral marker of attentional control during the attention training technique and its neural correlates.

BACKGROUND: The Attention Training Technique (ATT) is a core intervention of metacognitive therapy (MCT) effective in reducing repetitive negative thinking by engaging the lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC). The current study tests whether a parallel random number generation (RNG) task can serve as a behavioral marker of attentional engagement. METHODS: We conducted two studies using the fMRI-adapted ATT paradigm combined with a parallel RNG task. In the behavioral study (N = 36), we compared two task versions with short (21 presses) versus long (45 presses) trials. In the fMRI study (N = 42), t

Prioritising Psychological Prehabilitation Interventions for Cancer Surgery: An International Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative mental wellbeing is an important determinant of postoperative recovery, yet psychological care is frequently overlooked within multidisciplinary prehabilitation programmes. When included, psychological interventions are fragmented and inconsistently delivered. This study aimed to establish international multidisciplinary consensus on preferred psychological prehabilitation interventions for patients undergoing urogenital, thoracic or gastrointestinal cancer surgery, and to describe current practice. METHODS: A three-round Delphi was conducted between February and Sept

Teaching AI-Informed Diagnostic Reasoning in Dental Education: A Conceptual Framework.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly present in dental education and clinical practice through systems that support image interpretation, lesion detection, risk estimation, treatment planning, documentation, and access to clinical information. Existing curriculum frameworks appropriately emphasize foundational knowledge, ethical use, governance, and human-centered practice. Broad AI literacy, however, does not by itself teach students how to reason when an algorithmic output influences diagnosis or management. This perspective proposes a conceptual framework for teaching AI-informed di

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Functional Amnesia: When Concussion Becomes a Gateway to Functional Cognitive Disorder.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is typically associated with transient cognitive disturbance, particularly involving attention and new learning, with most patients demonstrating full recovery within weeks. Memory impairment in uncomplicated mTBI generally reflects reversible neurometabolic dysfunction and is limited to a brief period of post-traumatic amnesia and restricted retrograde loss surrounding the injury. However, a subset of patients develop persistent and disproportionate autobiographical memory disturbance that exceeds expected neuroanatomical limits and lacks structural correlat
