Reflex effects following selective stimulation of J receptors in the cat.

1. Experiments carried out on anaesthetized cats showed that increasing blood flow, through the lobes of a lung, by 133% (S.E. 33%) generated an average of 0.75 impulses/sec (S.E. 0.3) in ten almost silent J receptors. Equivalent activity was produced by injecting 12-18 micrograms phenyl diguanide/kg into the right atrium. Such activity caused marked reflex effects, i.e. apnoea, rapid shallow breathing and reduction in the knee jerk. 2. The reflex effects of J receptors were studied after blocking the activity from cardiac receptors by intrapericardial injections of xylocaine. This was necessa

Evaluation and conservative management of spondylolisthesis.

Plain x-rays of the lumbar spine are not helpful in diagnosing most known causes of low back pain but can reveal structural changes such as disc space narrowing, scoliosis, lumbarization or sacralization, spondylolysis, and spondylolisthesis. Spondylolisthesis is defined as the forward displacement of one vertebrae upon another, usually at the L5-S1 level, but also occurring at L4-5. For spondylolisthesis to occur there must be an anatomical change in the structures which normally resist the anterior displacement of one vertebrae upon the other. Forward slippage is resisted by the bony block o

Individual responses to pomegranate juice on recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage in collegiate male volleyball players.

BACKGROUND: Volleyball demands frequent explosive, stretch-shortening muscle actions that elevate the risk for exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS). Polyphenol-rich pomegranate juice (POMj) has been proposed to aid recovery, yet evidence in highly trained team-sport athletes is limited. This study investigated whether short-term POMj enhances functional and isokinetic recovery following an EIMD protocol in collegiate male volleyball players and identified individual responders using the smallest worthwhile change (SWC) method. METHODS: Fourteen Tier-3

Fitness and mobility training in patients with Intensive Care Unit-acquired muscle weakness (FITonICU): study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Critical illness myopathy (CIM) and polyneuropathy (CIP) are a common complication of critical illness. Both cause intensive-care-unit-acquired (ICU-acquired) muscle weakness (ICUAW) which increases morbidity and delays rehabilitation and recovery of activities of daily living such as walking ability. Focused physical rehabilitation of people with ICUAW is, therefore, of great importance at both an individual and a societal level. A recent systematic Cochrane review found no randomised controlled trials (RCT), and thus no supporting evidence, for physical rehabilitation interventio

Randomized clinical trial of treatment for TMJ disc displacement.

Of the various conservative treatment modalities available for temporomandibular disorders, we believe that therapeutic exercise has a good prognosis, especially for anterior disc displacement without reduction. Since its effectiveness has not been extensively evaluated, we conducted a comparative study to verify the hypothesis that treatment efficacy would not differ for exercise and occlusal splints. Fifty-two individuals with anterior disc displacement without reduction were randomly assigned to a splint or a joint mobilization self-exercise treatment group. Four outcome variables were eval

Rehabilitation of back pain with laser associated with negative or positive pressure massage in workers: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are an array of conditions affecting the human locomotor system, such as muscles, tendons, nerves, bones, and joints. It is related to physiological, kinesiological and biomechanical changes which result in pain, paresthesia, inflammation, weakness, tiredness, heaviness in limbs, fatigue, reduced range of motion and/or compression of peripheral nerves. The aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic effects of positive (massage gum) or negative pressure (vacuum therapy) combined with laser on the health of workers

Comparison of the effects of short-duration wrist joint splinting combined with physical therapy and physical therapy alone on the management of patients with lateral epicondylitis.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis (i.e., tennis elbow) is a condition caused by overuse of the arm, which can result in elbow pain. Recent evidence has shown wrist joint splinting as an effective intervention for people with lateral epicondylitis. AIM: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a 3 week wrist joint splinting and physical therapy intervention versus a standard physical therapy intervention on pain, wrist range of motion (ROM), and grip strength in people with lateral epicondylitis. DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. SETTING: University hospital outpatient clinics

WITHDRAWN: Interventions for preventing ankle ligament injuries.

BACKGROUND: Some sports, for example basketball and soccer, have a very high incidence of ankle injuries, mainly sprains. Consequently, ankle sprains are one of the most commonly treated injuries in acute care. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions used for the prevention of ankle ligament injuries or sprains in physically active individuals from adolescence to middle age. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauam Group's specialised register, MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, the National Research Register and bibliographies of study reports. Exercise training reshapes motor planning and preparation networks in cervical dystonia.

Cervical dystonia is the most common adult-onset focal dystonia, characterized by involuntary neck muscle contractions that produce abnormal head postures, jerky or tremor-like movements, and functional impairment. The first-line treatment is botulinum toxin, which provides symptomatic relief but requires repeated injections every 3-4 months, and up to one-third of patients discontinue therapy due to suboptimal benefit or adverse effects. There is clinical evidence that physical therapy interventions, including stretching, massage techniques, and resistance training exercise reduce symptom sev

Aquatic therapy for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: a pilot feasibility randomised controlled trial and mixed-methods process evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare disease that causes the progressive loss of motor abilities such as walking. Standard treatment includes physiotherapy. No trial has evaluated whether or not adding aquatic therapy (AT) to land-based therapy (LBT) exercises helps to keep muscles strong and children independent. OBJECTIVES: To assess the feasibility of recruiting boys with DMD to a randomised trial evaluating AT (primary objective) and to collect data from them; to assess how, and how well, the intervention and trial procedures work. DESIGN: Parallel-group, single-blind,

A group-based yoga program for urinary incontinence in ambulatory women: feasibility, tolerability, and change in incontinence frequency over 3 months in a single-center randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Because of the limitations of existing clinical treatments for urinary incontinence, many women with incontinence are interested in complementary strategies for managing their symptoms. Yoga has been recommended as a behavioral self-management strategy for incontinence, but evidence of its feasibility, tolerability, and efficacy is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility and tolerability of a group-based therapeutic yoga program for ambulatory middle-aged and older women with incontinence, and to examine preliminary changes in incontinence frequency as the primary efficacy

Economic Evaluation of a Tai Ji Quan Intervention to Reduce Falls in People With Parkinson Disease, Oregon, 2008-2011.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise is effective in reducing falls in people with Parkinson disease. However, information on the cost effectiveness of this approach is lacking. We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of Tai Ji Quan for reducing falls among patients with mild-to-moderate Parkinson disease. METHODS: We used data from a previous intervention trial to analyze resource use costs related to intervention delivery and number of falls observed during a 9-month study period. Cost effectiveness was estimated via incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) in which Tai Ji Quan was compared with 2

Hammer Toe Correction with Proximal Interphalangeal Joint Arthrodesis.

BACKGROUND: First described by Soule in 1910, arthrodesis of the proximal interphalangeal joint is a common operative method of treatment of hammer toe, or fixed-flexion deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the lesser toes1. The deformity is often caused by imbalance in intrinsic and extrinsic muscle function across the interphalangeal joint and metatarsophalangeal joint2,3, which can be effectively addressed through proximal interphalangeal joint straightening and arthrodesis in conjunction with soft-tissue balancing of the metatarsophalangeal joint. DESCRIPTION: Following long

Āsana for Neck, Shoulders, and Wrists to Prevent Musculoskeletal Disorders among Dental Professionals: In-Office Yóga Protocol.

Extensive literature reports an increase in physical disorders (pain, pathologies, dysfunctions) and mental malaise/uneasiness (stress, burnout) affecting dental professionals in relation to fast and pressing rhythms of work, long working hours, increasingly demanding patients, ever-evolving technologies, etc. This project has been conceived to bring the science of yoga around the world to dental professionals as a preventive (occupational) medicine and to provide knowledge and means for self-care. Yoga is a concentrative self-discipline of the mind, senses, and physical body, that requires re

Acute Effects of a Mini-Trampoline Training Session for Improving Normalized Symmetry Index in Participants with Higher Baseline Inter-Limb Asymmetry.

Background: Inter-limb asymmetry has implications for both athletic performance and healthcare practice. High baseline inter-limb asymmetries have been associated with impaired mobility, increased fall risk, and musculoskeletal injuries across the lifespan. Exercise interventions able to stimulate the stretch-shortening cycle (e.g., plyometric training and jump training) have been shown to have a good impact on asymmetries. Among these, Mini-Trampoline Training (MTT) has recently emerged as potentially effective in reducing asymmetries. Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate the acute effects

Corticosteroid or placebo injection combined with deep transverse friction massage, Mills manipulation, stretching and eccentric exercise for acute lateral epicondylitis: a randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis of the elbow is a frequent condition with long-lasting symptoms. Corticosteroid injection is increasingly discouraged and there is little knowledge on the combined effect of corticosteroid injection and physiotherapy for acute conditions. We wanted to investigate the efficacy of physiotherapy alone and combined with corticosteroid injection for acute lateral epicondylitis. METHODS: A randomized, controlled study with one-year follow-up was conducted in a general practice setting in Sarpsborg, Norway. We included 177 men and women aged 18 to 70 with clinically
