Neonatal hydrocephalus presents with various degrees of neuroinflammation and long-term neurologic deficits in surgically treated patients, provoking a need for additional medical treatment. We previously reported elevated neuroinflammation and severe periventricular white matter damage in the progressive hydrocephalus (prh) mutant which contains a point mutation in the Ccdc39 gene, causing loss of cilia-mediated unidirectional CSF flow. In this study, we identified cortical neuropil maturation defects such as impaired excitatory synapse maturation and loss of homeostatic microglia, and swimmi

Idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is a subtype of dementia with overlap toward Alzheimer's disease. Both diseases show deposition of the toxic metabolites amyloid-β and tau in brain. A unique feature with iNPH is that a subset of patients may improve clinically following cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion (shunt) surgery. The patients responding clinically to shunting are denoted Definite iNPH, otherwise iNPH is diagnosed as Possible iNPH or Probable iNPH, high-lightening that the clinical phenotype and underlying pathophysiology remain debated. Given the role of CSF disturbance

Neuronal dendritic arborizations and dendritic spines are crucial for a normal synaptic transmission and may be critically involved in the pathophysiology of epilepsy. Alterations in dendritic morphology and spine loss mainly in hippocampal neurons have been reported both in epilepsy animal models and in human brain tissues from patients with epilepsy. However, it is still unclear whether these dendritic abnormalities relate to the cause of epilepsy or are generated by seizure recurrence. We investigated fine neuronal structures at the level of dendritic and spine organization using Golgi impr

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized neuropathologically by the presence of amyloid plaques, neuritic plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). These lesions occur not only in demented individuals with AD but also in non-demented persons. In non-demented individuals, amyloid and neuritic plaques are usually accompanied with NFTs and are considered to represent asymptomatic or preclinical AD (pre-AD) pathology. Here, we defined and characterized neuropathological differences between clinical AD, non-demented pre-AD, and non-AD control cases. Our results show that clinical AD may be defi

Spongiform change is a cardinal feature in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). It is characterized by swelling of the neuronal processes and vacuolization of the neuropil, leading to increased intraneuronal water content. The present study examines, by gel electrophoresis and Western blotting, the expression levels of the water channels aquaporin 1 (AQP1) and aquaporin 4 (AQP4) in the frontal cortex (area 8) homogenates of sporadic CJD cases (six men, four women; seven cases with methionine/methionine

The neurons in the medial geniculate body were studied in Golgi preparations from adult mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii). Their somatic and dendritic configurations were compared with those of cells in other, nonecholocating mammals. A second goal was to use the thalamic nuclear subdivisions derived from Golgi material to integrate the findings in parallel studies of cytoarchitecture, immunocytochemistry, and tectothalamic connections. Three primary divisions are defined. The ventral division is large and has a stereotyped neuronal organization. Medium-sized perikarya (about 10 microns in

In order to investigate the topography and subdivisions of the human dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (10), studies were conducted using cyto- and chemoarchitectonic (acetylcholinesterase and substance P-like immunoreactivity) and computer reconstruction techniques. The six brainstems examined were obtained within 17 hours postmortem from adults with no known neurological disorders. Serial sections cut in transverse, sagittal, and coronal planes were stained with cresyl violet, or tested for acetylcholinesterase or substance P. The neurons of the 10 (16,826 +/- 967) displayed cyto- and

Antibody labeling of the calcium-binding protein calbindin 28kD (CaBP) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is altered by short-term monocular deprivation in the lateral geniculate nucleus and visual cortex of adult primates. It is not known whether these alterations occur in other subcortical visual structures. We therefore have examined antibody labeling to CaBP and GABA in the superior colliculus (SC) of visually deprived Rhesus monkeys. One group was monocularly enucleated as adults. The other monkeys experienced different types of monocular and binocular deprivation from birth, including oc

1. In this paper we begin an assessment of the role of synaptic properties, especially synaptic time course, in the function of the central pattern generator circuit (CPG) that controls rhythmic movements of the gastric mill in the foregut of spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus). 2. The majority of neurons in the gastric CPG are motor neurons (MNs) that innervate striated muscles of the gastric mill but that also make electrical and inhibitory chemical interconnections within the neuropil of the stomatogastric ganglion. We studied the ionic dependence, pharmacology, and time course of inhibit

Transganglionic transport of HRP was used to study the patterns of termination of somatic afferent fibers innervating oral and facial structures within the trigeminal nucleus caudalis and upper cervical dorsal horn of the cat. In separate animals, the superior alveolar, pterygopalatine, buccal, inferior alveolar, lingual, frontal, corneal, zygomatic, infraorbital, mental, mylohyoid, and auriculotemporal branches of the trigeminal nerve were traced in this experiment. The organization of the primary afferents innervating the oral structures is not uniform across laminae and at different rostroc

The ultrastructure and the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) permeability were studied in mice suffering from lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM). Brains and meninges from mice suffering from LCM virus-induced lymphocytic choriomeningitis were studied by investigating the BBB function and by electron and light microscopy. The cellular exudate in the leptomeninges was located in the subarachnoid space, in arachnoidea and pia, and it was dominated by proliferated pial cells and mononuclear cells, most of which were lymphocytes, while there were only a few neutrophil granulocytes. Fukutin, a product of the causative gene of Fukuyama congenital muscular dystrophy (FCMD), is known to be responsible for basement membrane formation. Patients with FCMD exhibit not only muscular dystrophy but also central nervous system abnormalities, including polymicrogyria and neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the cerebral cortex. The formation of NFTs cannot be explained by basement membrane disorganization. To determine the involvement of fukutin in the NFT formation, we performed molecular pathological investigations using autopsied human brains and cultured neurons of a cell line (SH-S

OBJECT: Because of their large size and high vascularity, complete removal of brain tumors in infants and young children is often difficult. In most cases the degree of resection is associated with prognosis. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy may facilitate resection by reducing the vascularity of the tumor. The authors evaluated the effectiveness of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in the management of these tumors.
METHODS: The authors performed a retrospective review of infants and young children who underwent tumor removal after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
RESULTS: Nine consecutive patients underwent resec

Both early (i.e., pre- and perinatal periods) and late (i.e., adolescent period) neurodevelopmental processes are thought to participate in the etiology and pathophysiology of schizophrenia. However, whether markers of these processes would be expected to predict an imminent onset of psychosis, as is hoped in the current generation of prodromal research programs, depends on whether their disruptions result from genetic factors shared by patients and some of their unaffected relatives, nongenetic factors specific to those who manifest the illness phenotype, or combinations of these sets of infl

Crush or transection of a peripheral nerve is known to induce transganglionic degenerative atrophy (TDA) in the segmentally related, ipsilateral Rolando substance of the spinal cord. When the lost peripheral connectivity is reestablished, the consecutive regenerative synaptoneogenesis results in restoration of the circuitry in the formerly deteriorated upper dorsal horn. Enhanced expression of the growth-associated protein (GAP43) B-50 occurs during neuronal differentiation, axon outgrowth, and peripheral nerve regeneration. This study documents changes in immunocytochemical distribution of B-

The development and final structure of the IXth, Xth and XIth cranial nerve nuclei are studied in ironhematoxylin -, thionin - and protargol -stained serial sections of about 50 baleen whale fetuses (blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, and fin whale, Balaenoptera physalus ) and one adult fin whale. The nucleus ambiguus is composed of three subdivisions, oral, intermediate and caudal, the last mentioned being contiguous caudally with the dorsal motor Xth nucleus. The oral division develops as three parallel cell columns which merge into a well circumscribed solitary structure with a rostrally ex

The mechanism by which neurotropic arboviruses gain access to the central nervous system remains uncertain, although it is generally assumed that viremic infection results in growth across or passive diffusion through brain capillaries. In contrast to the natural reservoir hosts of these arboviruses, clinical hosts (e.g., horses, humans) have viremias of very brief duration and low magnitude. We investigated the question of neuroinvasion in 5- to 6-week-old Syrian hamsters infected with St. Louis encephalitis virus (strain TBH-28). This model shares with the human disease low or undetectable v

We report a sporadic case of unusual cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) with prominent capillary involvement. A 67-year-old doctor developed gait disturbance, resting tremor and rigidity. He was diagnosed to have Parkinson's disease, for which the treatment with levodopa was effective. Four years later he began to exhibit progressive cognitive decline and behavioral abnormalities consisting of hallucination and agitation. Subsequently, his condition steadily worsened and became bedridden with severe dementia, and he died eight years after the disease onset. During the clinical course, there had

Two classes of GABAergic cell bodies have been described. They probably can be divided into GABAergic local interneurons and GABAergic projection neurons. GABAergic cell bodies receive few terminals which is in contrast to non-GABAergic somata, which receive many synaptic contacts. GABAergic dendrites that originate from GABAergic cell bodies, however, receive numerous terminals, both GABAergic and nonGABAergic. It can therefore be concluded that somatic inhibition is not present on GABAergic neurons, but does occur on nonGABAergic neurons. Furthermore, dendrites traverse large parts of the NO
