Customizable interdental splinting for repair of pediatric mandibular fractures in children with mixed dentition: A novel technique.

OBJECTIVE: Repair of pediatric mandibular fractures (PMFs) can be challenging due to the lack of permanent dentition for immobilization, and the presence of unerupted teeth and growth plates in the mandible limiting the space for fixation. Interdental splinting (IDS) has been advocated to provide temporary fixation without the need for mandibular plating; however, there is sparse description of the surgical methodology, and data on long term outcomes are even more limited. The aim of this study is to present our technique and outcomes using a novel technique for IDS repair of pediatric mandibl

Preoperative and postoperative examination of occlusal and maxillofacial changes after osteochondroma extirpation.

A patient came with left-side temporomandibular arthralgia, limited mandibular opening, frontal facial asymmetry, and a significant anterolateral open bite. Severe alterations in the occlusal and maxillofacial anatomy resulted from an osteochondroma associated with the mandibular condyle. We describe the changes associated with extirpation of the mandibular condylar osteochondroma and subsequent orthodontic treatment. These clinical changes resulted in improved facial symmetry and a satisfactory functional occlusion.

Global doctor opinion versus a patient questionnaire for the outcome assessment of treated temporomandibular disorder patients.

PURPOSE: Accurately assessing treatment outcomes has become increasingly important for maintaining hospital privileges. When these assessments are based on the judgment of the treating doctor, there is often an inherent positive bias. As a result, there has been increased interest in using patient-based assessments. The purpose of this study was to compare doctor's and patient's assessments of the outcomes of treatment in a series of patients with various temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-two consecutive TMD patients were initially given a questionnaire designed

A longitudinal study on the osteoarthritic change of the temporomandibular joint based on 1-year follow-up computed tomography.

This study aims to report the results of a 1-year computed tomographic (CT) follow up of 54 temporomandibular joints (TMJs) affected by osteoarthritis (OA) and to provide longitudinal information on changes in OA and its relationship with clinical signs and symptoms. TMJ OA was diagnosed by history, clinical and CT examinations. The second CT examination was done after about 1 year of conservative treatment. Joints were divided into three groups labeled as no change, improved CT, and worsened CT groups depending on the longitudinal bony change of OA observed in the CT. The sex distribution, me

A comparison of dental changes produced by mandibular advancement splints in the management of obstructive sleep apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular advancement splints (MAS) are a recognised and popular treatment option for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) due to their simplicity, tolerance and non-invasiveness. OBJECTIVES: To investigate and compare the dental changes associated with the use of monoblock and duoblock appliances. METHODS: Fifty-two pretreatment and follow-up study models of patients from a public hospital and private dental clinic were assessed. Seventeen subjects used a soft elastomeric monoblock appliance (MB), 29 subjects used a hard acrylic duoblock (DB) and six subjects wore a monoblock followe

Characterization of patients with disc displacement without reduction unresponsive to nonsurgical treatment: a preliminary study.

PURPOSE: Arthrocentesis and arthroscopic lysis and lavage have been described as effective treatment modalities for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc displacement without reduction (DDw/oR). More commonly, nonsurgical intervention is offered as the desired first-line treatment; however, a certain group of DDw/oR patients receiving nonsurgical treatment may remain unresponsive, thereby prolonging suffering and treatment dissatisfaction. The purpose of this study is to characterize these nonresponders by evaluating the characteristic pretreatment findings peculiar to this group. PATIENTS AND M

A conservative approach for treating young adult patients with porcelain laminate veneers.

UNLABELLED: Controversy persists regarding the treatment planning criteria for young adult patients in need of esthetic restorations. The trend of conservative treatment modalities continues to become widely acknowledged. One of the conservative treatment modalities is porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs). PLVs not only provide suitable esthetics but also reliable functional strength. This article presents two anterior esthetic cases to demonstrate a conservative treatment planning approach and its application as a nontraditional solution for young adult patients. It is recommended that a conserv

The relationship of bone marrow edema pattern in the mandibular condyle with joint pain in patients with temporomandibular joint disorders: longitudinal study with MR imaging.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the course of bone marrow edema pattern (decreased signal intensity on T1- or proton-density-weighted images and increased signal intensity on T2-weighted fat-suppressed images) in the mandibular condyle after improvement in clinical symptoms, and to clarify its relationship with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. This study was based on 14 joints of 11 patients (all female, mean age 37.5 years) with TMJ disorders showing condylar bone marrow edema pattern on initial magnetic resonance (MR) images. All joints were re-evaluated clinically and using
