Evaluation of cochlear function in normal-hearing young adults exposed to MP3 player noise by analyzing transient evoked otoacoustic emissions and distortion products.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to recreational noise may cause injuries to the inner ear, and transient evoked (TEOAEs) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) may identify these cochlear alterations. The goal of this study was to evaluate TEOAEs and DPOAEs as a method to diagnose early cochlear alterations in young adults exposed to MP3 player noise. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a prospective study of the cochlear function in normal-hearing MP3 player users by analyzing TEOAE and DPOAE incidence, amplitude, and spectral content. We gathered a sample of 40 ears from patients between

Otitis media with effusion.

The clinical practice guideline on otitis media with effusion (OME) provides evidence-based recommendations on diagnosing and managing OME in children. This is an update of the 1994 clinical practice guideline "Otitis Media With Effusion in Young Children," which was developed by the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research (now the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality). In contrast to the earlier guideline, which was limited to children 1 to 3 years old with no craniofacial or neurologic abnormalities or sensory deficits, the updated guideline applies to children aged 2 months through

Bacterial Species and Antibiotic Sensitivity in Korean Patients Diagnosed with Acute Otitis Media and Otitis Media with Effusion.

Changes over time in pathogens and their antibiotic sensitivity resulting from the recent overuse and misuse of antibiotics in otitis media (OM) have complicated treatment. This study evaluated changes over 5 years in principal pathogens and their antibiotic sensitivity in patients in Korea diagnosed with acute OM (AOM) and OM with effusion (OME). The study population consisted of 683 patients who visited the outpatient department of otorhinolaryngology in 7 tertiary hospitals in Korea between January 2010 and May 2015 and were diagnosed with acute AOM or OME. Aural discharge or middle ear flu

Can low frequency sound stimulation during posturography help diagnosing possible perilymphatic fistula in patients with sensorineural hearing loss and/or vertigo?

Perilymphatic fistula (PLF) is often difficult to diagnose because of the similar symptomatology, such as vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss, which is found in several inner ear diseases. We attempted to correlate a positive result of low frequency sound (LFS) stimulation tests in posturography with the presence or absence of a PLF confirmed by transtympanic endoscopy in 209 patients with various inner ear diseases (Meniere's disease ( n=128), vestibulopathy ( n=41), cochleopathy ( n=28) and sudden deafness ( n=12). LFS provoked unsteadiness in posturography without PLF in 24 patients with Men

National survey of pediatricians' opinions about and practices for acute otitis media and xylitol use.

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media (AOM) is the main reason for physician visits and antibiotic prescriptions in children. Pediatricians (Peds) are gatekeepers for services and sources of information for families. The 2004 American Academy of Pediatrics/American Academy of Family Physicians (AAP/AAFP) Clinical Practice Guideline: Diagnosis and Management of Acute Otitis Media recommended preventative and management measures for Peds' practice. Treatments for AOM (antimicrobial therapy and surgery) sometimes have questionable effectiveness, risks, and high costs. Thus, Peds should consider using pr

[Facial nerve paralysis secondary to acute otitis media].

OBJECTS: To discuss clinical presentation and therapeutic approaches of facial paralysis in acute otitis media. METHODS: We present five cases of facial palsy in children with acute otitis media managed in our ENT department during a period of 12 years (2001-2012). RESULTS: The mean age was 14.2 years; sex ratio was 0.66. All patients presented with a facial asymmetry, but only 3 of them had otalgia before the onset of facial asymmetry. The facial palsy delay was 3.3 days. The ear examination showed that the tympanic membrane was congestive in 4 patients, associated with a bulging in 2 patie

Echinococcosis presenting as an otogenic brain abscess: an unusual lesion of the middle ear cleft and temporal lobe.

This paper presents a case of a 28-year-old male with a seizure episode and a 4-year history of intermittent tinnitus on the left ear. On computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, a density with rim enhancement was found at the temporal lobe, associated with mastoid tegmen destruction and middle ear mass, indicating cholesteatoma with complicating brain abscess. Evacuation of the brain abscess was performed with a combined otolaryngologic and neurosurgical procedures (canal wall-down mastoidectomy and temporal craniotomy). The pathology turned out to be infestation with Echinococcus

Otitis media sequelae and hearing in adolescence after administration of an 11-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine in infancy: a prospective cohort study with long-term follow-up of the ARIVAC trial.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have been shown in randomised controlled trials and epidemiological studies to prevent acute otitis media caused by vaccine serotype pneumococci, although their role in preventing complications of acute otitis media is less clear. We hypothesised that the 11-valent PCV would reduce the long-term sequelae of acute otitis media, including moderate-to-severe ear disease and hearing loss. METHODS: This prospective cohort study, referred to as 11PCV study, included follow-up after 16-20 years of children previously enrolled in 2000-04, at age 6 we
