Eukaryotic-type aromatic amino acid decarboxylase from the root colonizer Pseudomonas putida is highly specific for 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine, an allelochemical in the rhizosphere.

Aromatic amino acid decarboxylases (AADCs) are found in various organisms and play distinct physiological roles. AADCs from higher eukaryotes have been well studied because they are involved in the synthesis of biologically important molecules such as neurotransmitters and alkaloids. In contrast, bacterial AADCs have received less attention because of their simplicity in physiology and in target substrate (tyrosine). In the present study, we found that Pseudomonas putida KT2440 possesses an AADC homologue (PP_2552) that is more closely related to eukaryotic enzymes than to bacterial enzymes, a

RNA editing by ADARs is important for normal behavior in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Here we take advantage of the well-characterized and simple nervous system of Caenorhabditis elegans to further our understanding of the functions of RNA editing. We describe the two C.elegans ADAR genes, adr-1 and adr-2, and characterize strains containing homozygous deletions in each, or both, of these genes. We find that adr-1 is expressed in most, if not all, cells of the C.elegans nervous system and also in the developing vulva. Using chemotaxis assays, we show that both ADARs are important for normal behavior. Biochemical, molecular and phenotypic analyses indicate that ADR-1 and ADR-2 h

Fasciola hepatica: comparative effects of host resistance and parasite intra-specific interactions on size and reproductive histology in flukes from rats infected with isolates differing in triclabendazole sensitivity.

The efficacies of putative fasciolicides and vaccines against Fasciola hepatica are frequently monitored in clinical and field trials by determination of fluke egg output in host faeces and by worm counts in the host liver at autopsy. Less often used are parameters based on fluke size and histology, yet these can provide important indications of specific effects on the development of particular germ-line or somatic tissues, especially in relation to the timing and profligacy of egg production. In this study, F. hepatica metacercariae of two distinct isolates, the triclabendazole (TCBZ)-sensiti

Unraveling the cryptic functions of mitogen-activated protein kinases Cpk2 and Mpk2 in Cryptococcus neoformans.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways are fundamental to the regulation of biological processes in eukaryotic organisms. The basidiomycete Cryptococcus neoformans, known for causing fungal meningitis worldwide, possesses five MAPKs. Among these, Cpk1, Hog1, and Mpk1 have established roles in sexual reproduction, stress responses, and cell wall integrity. However, the roles of Cpk2 and Mpk2 are less understood. Our study elucidates the functional interplay between the Cpk1/Cpk2 and Mpk1/Mpk2 MAPK pathways in C. neoformans. We discovered that CPK2 overexpression compensates for cpk1Δ

Influence of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis infection on the attractiveness of BALB/c mice to Nyssomyia neivai (Diptera: Psychodidae).

BACKGROUND: Phlebotomine sand flies are vectors for several pathogens, with Leishmania being the most important. In Brazil, the main aetiological agent of American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis, and Nyssomyia neivai is one of its main vectors in São Paulo state and other areas of South America. Similar to other haematophagous insects, sand flies use volatile compounds called kairomones to locate their hosts for blood meals. A possible increase in the attractiveness of hosts infected with Leishmania infantum to their vectors has been demonstrated. In the pre

Hostile intent in public crowded spaces: a field study.

Hostile reconnaissance is vital to successful terrorist activity. Individuals carrying out this activity are likely to experience raised levels of stress and this will manifest itself at biological, physiological, psychological and behavioural levels, providing an opportunity for detection. A field trial was undertaken in an ecologically valid environment measuring variables considered likely to be salient during hostile intent. The parameters examined in the field trial varied in a predictable manner and suggest that stressed individuals secrete a volatile steroid based marker that could form

Diversity in trap color and height increases species richness of bark and woodboring beetles detected in multiple funnel traps.

Early detection of non-native, potentially invasive bark beetles and woodboring beetles (BBWB) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, Disteniidae; Curculionidae: Scolytinae) inadvertently introduced to new habitats via global trade is a critical issue for regulatory agencies in numerous countries. We conducted trapping experiments to evaluate the effects of trap color (black vs. green vs. purple) and trap height (canopy vs. understory) on detection of BBWB in Canada, Poland, USA, and China, using Fluon-treated 12-unit multiple-funnel traps. Each trap was baited with the same pheromone and eth

Bacteria Modify Candida albicans Hypha Formation, Microcolony Properties, and Survival within Macrophages.

Phagocytic cells are crucial components of the innate immune system preventing Candida albicans mucosal infections. Streptococcus gordonii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa often colonize mucosal sites, along with C. albicans, and yet interkingdom interactions that might alter the survival and escape of fungi from macrophages are not understood. Murine macrophages were coinfected with S. gordonii or P. aeruginosa, along with C. albicans to evaluate changes in fungal survival. S. gordonii increased C. albicans survival and filamentation within macrophage phagosomes, while P. aeruginosa reduced fungal

Tick repellents and acaricides of botanical origin: a green roadmap to control tick-borne diseases?

Arthropods are dangerous vectors of agents of deadly diseases, which may hit as epidemics or pandemics in the increasing world population of humans and animals. Among them, ticks transmit more pathogen species than any other group of blood-feeding arthropods worldwide. Thus, the effective and eco-friendly control of tick vectors in a constantly changing environment is a crucial challenge. A number of novel routes have been attempted to prevent and control tick-borne diseases, including the development of (i) vaccines against viruses vectored by ticks; (ii) pheromone-based control tools, with s

Seizure control by ketogenic diet-associated medium chain fatty acids.

The medium chain triglyceride (MCT) ketogenic diet is used extensively for treating refractory childhood epilepsy. This diet increases the plasma levels of medium straight chain fatty acids. A role for these and related fatty acids in seizure control has not been established. We compared the potency of an established epilepsy treatment, Valproate (VPA), with a range of MCT diet-associated fatty acids (and related branched compounds), using in vitro seizure and in vivo epilepsy models, and assessed side effect potential in vitro for one aspect of teratogenicity, for liver toxicology and in vivo

Odor-guided behavior in mammals.

The odor-guided behaviors selected for presentation in this paper encompass the major areas of animal behavior, and illustrate the important principal that complex relations exist between odor-guided behaviors, hormonal state, and experiential factors. Clearly, experiences with odors at several life stages results in profound influences upon later behaviors, including those related to eating, mating, fighting, and nesting. Interestingly, only brief social encounters are needed in rats to induce such phenomena as ultrasonic calling to conspecific estrous females or their odors, preferences for

Epigenetic modification of vomeronasal (V2r) precursor neurons by histone deacetylation.

Vomeronasal neurons undergo continuous neurogenesis throughout development and adult life. These neurons originate as stem cells in the apical zone of the lumen of the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and are described as nestin-expressing glia-like progenitor cells (Murdoch and Roskams, 2008). They then migrate horizontally along the basal zone where they differentiate into functional VNO neurons (Kaba et al., 1988). We harvested progenitor cells from the adult VNO and, after 3-6 months of invitro culture, these VNO neurons remained in a stable undifferentiated state expressing nestin, beta-tubulin II

Effect of prenatal androgen receptor antagonist or aromatase inhibitor on sexual behavior, partner preference and neuronal Fos responses to estrous female odors in the rat accessory olfactory system.

Many socially relevant odors are detected in rodent species by the vomeronasal organ and subsequently processed by the accessory olfactory system (AOS). We previously found that gonadectomized male and female rats treated in adulthood with testosterone propionate (TP) showed equivalent Fos responses in the AOS to odors derived from estrous females. Likewise, in contrast with numerous other mammalian species, gonadectomized female rats show surprisingly high levels of male-typical mounting behavior in response to adult TP. We tested the hypothesis that prenatal testosterone (T) exposure, acting

A predictive ant colony optimization routing protocol for correlated link stability in wireless body area networks.

BACKGROUND: Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are essential for continuous health monitoring but face critical challenges due to dynamic link instability caused by body movements and strict bio-safety requirements. The fluctuating wireless channel leads to high packet loss, while radio frequency (RF) energy absorption, measured as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), must remain below 1.6 W/kg to prevent tissue damage. Existing routing protocols often react to failures rather than predict them and rarely co-optimize reliability with thermal safety. METHODS: This paper proposes PACO-CLS (Predicti

An improved medium for in vitro studies of female reproduction and oviposition in Schistosoma japonicum.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a disease primarily caused by eggs laid by pathogens called schistosomes. Among the schistosome species infecting humans, Schistosoma japonicum possesses the largest fecundity; each adult female produces an average of 3500 eggs per day. The lack of proper culture conditions supporting continuous oviposition in vitro has precluded detailed investigation of mechanisms regulating sexual maturation and egg production in Schistosoma japonicum. METHODS: We optimized in vitro culture conditions by replacing reagents that are part of the classical ABC169 medium. Fast Bl

[Systems of chemoperception in decapod crayfish].

The review presents data on some peripheral and central structures in the system of perception of chemical stimuli in crayfish and other Decapoda. The hair receptors on chelipeds, antennas, antennules are innervated by mechano-and chemoreceptor neurons. Antennules are the specialized crayfish chemoreceptor organs, on the surface of which groups of exteroceptors are located. There is an ordered disposition of exteroceptor receptive fields in the form of receptor hair bushes on claws of ambulatory feet (AF), antennas, antennules, and other movable appendages. Behavioral experiments have shown se
