Tarsal Bone Dysplasia in Clubfoot as Measured by Ultrasonography: Can It be Used as a Prognostic Indicator in Congenital Idiopathic Clubfoot? A Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV )/clubfoot is the most common congenital orthopedic condition. The success rate of Ponseti casting in the hands of the legend himself is not 100%. The prediction of difficult to correct foot and recurrences still remains a mystery to be solved. We all know that tarsal bones are dysplastic in clubfoot and considering it; we hypothesize that the amount of tarsal dysplasia can predict management duration and outcome. In literature we were not able to find studies that satisfactorily quantify the amount of tarsal dysplasia. Hence, it was considered

Micro-magnetic resonance imaging and embryological analysis of wild-type and pma mutant mice with clubfoot.

Gross similarities between the external appearance of the hind limbs of the peroneal muscle atrophy (pma) mouse mutant and congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV), a human disorder historically referred to as 'clubfoot', suggested that this mutant could be a useful model. We used micro-magnetic resonance imaging to visualize the detailed anatomy of the hind limb defect in mutant pma mice and performed 3D comparisons between mutant and wild-type hind limbs. We found that the pma foot demonstrates supination (i.e. adduction and inversion of the mid foot and fore foot together with plantar flexion

Pharmacokinetics and bioequivalence of 20 mg omeprazole capsule in 24 healthy Korean male volunteers.

BACKGROUND: Congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a common but still not fully understood disorder of the lower limb. It is usually defined as a fixation of the foot in adduction, supination, and varus. Different treatment options exist including the Ponseti method. AIM: We report here the results obtained in infants with CTEV treated by the Ponseti method. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty two patients (114 clubfeet) were enrolled at the Orthopaedic Clinic of Catania University during the period of March 2004 to January 2010 and followed prospectively up to February 2011: 56 patients (68.29%)

The Akron dome midfoot osteotomy as a salvage procedure for the treatment of rigid pes cavus: a retrospective review.

OBJECTIVE: In the early 1970s, the Akron dome osteotomy was developed as a salvage surgical option to manage rigid cavus deformity of the foot. This study represents an updated review of surgical cases between 1972 and 2001 constituting 89 patients representing 139 feet who were followed at least 2 years after the index operative procedure. Only cases achieving an unsatisfactory result followed less than 2 years were included. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review of cases (all operated by D.S.W.) was conducted by clinical examination and chart review of all 89 cases representing 139 feet. RE

Minimally invasive management of relapsed clubfoot: Percutaneous tendo-Achilles and plantar fascia releases combined with soft tissue distraction using the Ilizarov method.

BackgroundRelapsed congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) in children who have undergone previous surgical intervention presents a significant treatment challenge due to soft tissue scarring, joint stiffness, and complex multiplanar deformities. The Ilizarov method offers a minimally invasive approach that allows gradual correction while preserving soft tissue integrity.MethodsThis retrospective case series evaluated 26 relapsed clubfeet in 21 patients treated between January 2020 and June 2024. All patients had previously undergone operative treatment and presented with rigid or partially

Safety concerns of paternal drug exposure on fertility, pregnancy and offspring: An analysis based on the FDA adverse event reporting system.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence indicates that paternal condition significantly influences pregnancy outcomes and offspring health. However, assessing the safety of paternal drug exposure via randomized controlled trials poses ethical challenges, and relevant clinical studies consume a lot of resources to evaluate only a few drugs. Currently, safety data on paternal drug exposure are scarce. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of paternal drug exposure on fertility, pregnancy outcomes, and offspring health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the FDA adverse event reporting system (FAERS) were a

Association of Socioeconomic Status With Relapse After Ponseti Method Treatment of Idiopathic Clubfeet.

BACKGROUND: The Ponseti method is today's standard treatment of idiopathic talipes equinovarus (ITEV). Compliance with foot abduction bracing (FABO) and socioeconomic factors have been shown to impact treatment outcome. We wished to further study socioeconomic factors using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), a more comprehensive way to evaluate socioeconomic status, which has not been done before. METHODS: All TEV patients from 2010 through 2019 treated with the Ponseti method were reviewed. Standard demographic variables, as well as the number of casts to complete initial correction, FABO com

Co-occurrence of orofacial clefts and clubfoot phenotypes in a sub-Saharan African cohort: Whole-exome sequencing implicates multiple syndromes and genes.

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are congenital malformations of the face and palate, with an incidence of 1 per 700 live births. Clubfoot or congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) is a three-dimensional abnormality of the leg, ankle, and feet that leads to the anomalous positioning of foot and ankle joints and has an incidence of 1 per 1000 live births. OFCs and CTEV may occur together or separately in certain genetic syndromes in addition to other congenital abnormalities. Here, we sought to decipher the genetic etiology of OFC and CTEV that occurred together in six probands. METHODS: At

[A case of idiopathic orthostatic hypotension with selective involvement of postganglionic noradrenergic neurons].

A 44-year-old man had a 30-year history of orthostatic hypotension and diarrhea. One month before admission, he suddenly lost consciousness by defecation, and was hospitalized. He became alert within two days, but he could not sit up due to severe orthostatic hypotension. At that point, he was transferred to our hospital. On admission, talipes and microdactylia were noted. Neurological examination revealed brisk patellar tendon reflexes. Anhidrosis or impotence was not present. Analyses of blood and urine yielded normal results. Cardiological examination revealed no abnormality that could be r

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Anxiety among Parents of Children with Idiopathic Congenital Clubfoot: A Single-center, Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic congenital clubfoot (congenital talipes equinovarus) is a common congenital musculoskeletal deformity with an incidence of approximately 1-2 per 1000 live births. The Ponseti method is the current standard of treatment and requires prolonged parental involvement, repeated hospital visits, and strict adherence to bracing protocols. These demands may impose psychological stress on caregivers. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety among parents of children with idiopathic congenital clubfoot and identify factors associated with increased anxiety levels. M

Genetic Role in Recurrence of Idiopathic CTEV: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Talipes Equinovarus (CTEV) is a multitude of deformities involving equinus, varus, adductus, and cavus deformities. Clubfoot affects 1 in every 1000 infants born worldwide, with various incidences according to geographical areas. It has been previously hypothesized that the possible genetic role in Idiopathic CTEV (ICTEV) might have a treatment-resistant phenotype. However, the genetic involvement in recurrent ICTEV cases is yet to be determined. AIM: To systematically review existing literature regarding the discovery of genetic involvement in recurrent ICTEV to date t

A hospital-based birth defects surveillance system in Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In 2010, the World Health Assembly passed a resolution calling upon countries to prevent birth defects where possible. Though birth defects surveillance programs are an important source of information to guide implementation and evaluation of preventive interventions, many countries that shoulder the largest burden of birth defects do not have surveillance programs. This paper shares the results of a hospital-based birth defects surveillance program in Uganda which, can be adopted by similar resource-limited countries. METHODS: All informative births, including live births, stillb

Ponseti Technique For Management Of Congenital Idiopathic Club Foot.

BACKGROUND: Clubfoot or congenital talipes equinovarus, is a congenital deformity of the foot. It consists of cavus, adduction, varus and equinus. This is due to medial displacement of navicular and calcaneus around the talus. Talus is in equinus. Medial deviation of the head and neck of talus is due to force of calcaneus on talus. METHODS: This descriptive case series study was conducted at Orthopaedic unit, Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad from 1st August 2015 to 31st January 2016 to determine the frequency of idiopathic clubfoot correction, by using the Ponseti method.
