Optic disc haemorrhages at baseline as a risk factor for poor outcome in the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Treatment Trial.

BACKGROUND: The risk of optic disc haemorrhages on visual outcome in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is unknown. We report the type and frequency of optic disc haemorrhages and other funduscopic abnormalities at baseline in the study eye of the 133 subjects enrolled in the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Treatment Trial completing 6 months of follow-up. METHODS: We reviewed optic disc photographs to tabulate the frequency and type of optic disc haemorrhages, other funduscopic abnormalities and papilloedema grades of the study eye at baseline and analyse if their presence is as

A 59-year-old woman with visible precordial pulsations.

UNLABELLED: CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: A retired 59-year-old woman presented to the cardiology clinic concerned with cardiac pulsations that were visible on her chest wall. These were not associated with dyspnoea, syncope or chest discomfort.Of note, 8 years previously, she complained of recurrent nocturnal diaphoresis and 5 kg weight loss. Blood sampling at that time revealed a microcytic anaemia, reactive thrombocytosis and raised inflammatory markers (erythrocyte sedimentation rate 99 mm/hour, C-reactive protein 161 mg/L). Following an episode of transient diplopia, ophthalmoscopy demonstrated

Consequences of intra-uterine growth retardation for postnatal growth, metabolism and pathophysiology.

Intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR), caused by maternal undernutrition or placental insufficiency, is usually associated with disproportionately large reductions in the growth of some fetal organs and tissues (thymus, liver, spleen, thyroid) and impaired cellular development of other tissues (small intestine, secondary wool follicles, skeletal muscle). Growth of other tissues, most notably brain, is relatively unimpaired. In our restudy of postnatal consequences of IUGR in the offspring of prolific ewes, growth-retarded newborn lambs tended to be hypoglycaemic and showed sluggish postnatal

Adoptive transfer of allergic airway responses with sensitized lymphocytes in BN rats.

To evaluate the role of lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of allergic bronchoconstriction, we investigated whether allergic airway responses are adoptively transferred by antigen-primed lymphocytes in Brown Norway (BN) rats. Animals were actively sensitized to ovalbumin (OA) or sham sensitized, and 14 d later mononuclear cells (MNCs) were isolated from intrathoracic lymph nodes, passed through a nylon wool column, and transferred to naive syngeneic rats. Recipients were challenged with aerosolized OA or bovine serum albumin (BSA) (5% wt/vol) and analyzed for changes in lung resistance (RL), airw

A prospective study of the development of hand eczema in an automobile manufacturing industry.

We have not been able to find any prospective study of the risk of developing occupational dermatitis in the car manufacturing industry. To try to define individual predictive risk factors for the development of hand eczema and to determine the prevalence of hand eczema within 1 year in an automobile manufacturing industry, we investigated prospectively 1564 new employees during one year of employment. Only persons with previous atopic dermatitis or hand eczema were restricted to dry and clean workplaces. The employees were personally interviewed and examined before their employment. Written q

Enhancement of sheep erythrocyte (SRBC)-induced pleurisy in non-sensitized mice by cyclophosphamide: demonstration of natural cell-mediated immune reactivity to SRBC.

Intrapleural injection of 2 x 10(8) sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) into normal C57BL/6N (B6) mice produced a low but significant exudate leucocyte reaction, which was delayed in onset and mononuclear cell dominant. However, administration of 20-200 mg/kg cyclophosphamide (CY) in mice induced a dose-dependent enhancement of this reaction. In contrast, erythrocytes of syngeneic and allogeneic mice, rats, guinea-pigs rabbits and humans showed no or slight enhancement in CY-treated B6 mice. Maximal enhancement was observed on day 6 after CY treatment, but the reactions fell on day 7 and gradually decre

Toxicity of combustion products from burning polymers: development and evaluation of methods.

Laboratory and room-scale experiments were conducted with natural and synthetic polymers: cotton, paper, wood, wool, acetate, acrylic, nylon, and urethane. Smoke and off-gases from single materials were generated in a dual-compartment 110-liter exposure chamber. Multicomponent, composite fuel loads were burned within a 100 m(3) facility subdivided into rooms. In chamber experiments, mortality depended on the amount of material burned, i.e., fuel consumption (FC). Conventional dose (FC)/mortality curves were obtained, and the amount of fuel required to produce 50% mortality (FC(50)) was calcula

The toxicology of orally administered Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol in sheep.

INTRODUCTION: As part of a larger study to assess the potential value of industrial hemp biomass (the low Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) variety of Cannabis sativa L.) as a feed for ruminants, a pharmacokinetics study of Δ9-THC, one of the main cannabinoids of interest, was undertaken. In undertaking this study, the toxicology of orally administered Δ9-THC was incidentally investigated and was discussed in the current paper. METHODS: Eight Merino ewes were administered with two per os (PO) doses of 88.5 mg Δ9-THC/kg bodyweight (BW) 12 h apart. Blood samples were taken periodically to determ

Vitamin E promotes dermal papilla cell proliferation via the lncRNA2919/STAT1 axis to activate the Hedgehog signaling pathway.

Hair-follicle development is a key determinant of the quality and yield of Angora rabbit wool. Vitamin E (VE) has antioxidant properties and regulates cell proliferation. However, the molecular mechanism by which VE regulates hair-follicle growth is unclear. This study investigated the effects of VE on hair follicles and dermal papilla cells (DPCs) in vitro, as well as their underlying regulatory mechanism involving long noncoding RNA (lncRNA)2919, STAT1, and the Hedgehog signaling pathway. Hair follicles and DPCs were isolated and cultured. The optimal VE concentration was determined to be 50

Characterization and Assessment of Sheep-Origin Probiotic Bacillus licheniformis B63 Strain for Potential Use in Intestinal Health and Disease.

Bacterial diarrhea causes serious losses for the sheep industry. Antibiotic resistance acquired by diarrheal bacteria is still a hurdle in the care of animal health. Thus, it is urgent to develop effective alternatives to antibiotics for controlling bacterial diarrhea. We initially isolated Bacillus spp. from Xinjiang fine wool sheep fecal and determined their properties of hemolysis and tolerance to acid and bile salts to identify potential candidates. Subsequently, we studied the position of a candidate in phylogenetic trees by 16S rRNA sequences and its susceptibility to antibiotics, abilit

Pythium insidiosum keratitis - A review.

Pythium insidiosum is an oomycete and is also called "parafungus" as it closely mimics fungal keratitis. The last decade saw an unprecedented surge in Pythium keratitis cases, especially from Asia and India, probably due to growing research on the microorganism and improved diagnostic and treatment modalities. The clinical features such as subepithelial infiltrate, cotton wool-like fluffy stromal infiltrate, satellite lesions, corneal perforation, endoexudates, and anterior chamber hypopyon closely resemble fungus. The classical clinical features of Pythium that distinguish it from other micro

An Automated Aerosol Collection and Extraction System to Characterize Electronic Cigarette Aerosols.

Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) market increased by 122% during 2014-2020 and is expected to continue growing rapidly. Despite their popularity, e-cigarettes are known to emit dangerous levels of toxic compounds (e.g., carbonyls), but a lack of accurate and efficient testing methods is hindering the characterization of e-cigarette aerosols emitted by a wide variety of e-cigarette devices, e-liquids, and use patterns. The aim of this study is to fill this gap by developing an automated E-cigarette Aerosol Collection and Extraction System (E-ACES) consisting of a vaping machine and a collecti

Ocular Involvement in COVID-19: Conjunctivitis and More.

Since the beginning of 2020, SARS-CoV-2, the pathogen of COVID-19, has led to a global pandemic that also affects ophthalmology. Ophthalmologists can be confronted at any time with potentially COVID-19 associated ocular symptoms or manifestations in patients and also become infected through close patient contact. Even without systemic infection, the ocular surface can come into direct contact with aerosols or liquids containing SARS-CoV-2 particles. A smear infection through hand-to-eye contact is also possible. A purely isolated ocular infection has not yet been shown. Rather, it seems that o
