The ten-year evaluation of clinical characteristics in congenital lung anomaly in pediatrics; a retrospective study in North of Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital lung anomalies (CLA) are a group of anomalies, including congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM), bronchopulmonary sequestrations (BPS), congenital lobar emphysema (CLE), and bronchogenic cysts (BC). The prevalence of these rare anomalies has risen in recent years, according to various population-based studies due to advances in fetal ultrasound technology. METHOD: This retrospective study examines the diagnosis of CLA, and was conducted on 72 patients between March 2014 and March 2024 at Taleghani Pediatric Hospital in Gorgan, Iran. RESULT: The average age

An augmented reality navigation system for pediatric oncologic surgery based on preoperative CT and MRI images.

PURPOSE: In pediatric endoscopic surgery, a limited view and lack of tactile sensation restrict the surgeon's abilities. Moreover, in pediatric oncology, it is sometimes difficult to detect and resect tumors due to the adhesion and degeneration of tumors treated with multimodality therapies. We developed an augmented reality (AR) navigation system based on preoperative CT and MRI imaging for use in endoscopic surgery for pediatric tumors. METHODS: The patients preoperatively underwent either CT or MRI with body surface markers. We used an optical tracking system to register the reconstructed

Deep neck infections in different age groups of children.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Deep neck infections (DNIs) can cause significant morbidity in children. This study analyzes the clinical presentations, diagnostic clues, and age relationship of DNI in pediatric patients. METHODS: Pediatric patients admitted to our hospital from January 1996 to December 2007 with a diagnosis of DNIs were reviewed retrospectively. Diseases were categorized according to the site of infection: peritonsillar, parapharyngeal, and retropharyngeal spaces. Patients were divided into two groups: children (aged < 10 years) and adolescents (aged 10-18 years). RESULTS: Fifty pediat

Congenital bronchial atresia with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return.

A 35-year-old woman with a high fever had a cystic lesion of the right lung including fluid and air. She was diagnosed with an infected bronchial cyst caused by congenital bronchial atresia with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. She underwent a right upper lobectomy successfully. Patients with congenital bronchial atresia often have recurrent pulmonary infections with various imaging findings. The aberrant vein may relate to interruption of the bronchus in a patient with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return. Although segmental resection is recommended for this benign disease, lob

Perioperative Complications of Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Pulmonary Procedures in Neonates and Infants.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has gained broad acceptance among pediatric surgeons. Today, VATS can be regarded as a routine approach for various conditions in neonates and infants. However, there is a lack of information concerning the complications of thoracoscopic pulmonary surgery in neonates and infants. We aimed to review the available data. A systematic review of the literature was performed using PubMed. All publications reporting on VATS for pulmonary procedures in neonates and infants up to the age of 1 year were included. Articles were reviewed in detail for occurrence

A forgotten old disease: mediastinal tuberculous lymphadenitis in children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was two-fold: (1) to highlight the varied presentation of mediastinal tuberculous lymphadenitis (MTL) in children and (2) to identify parameters, that may help in the early diagnosis of this condition. METHODS: Between January 1995 and December 2002, 13 children with histological diagnosis of MTL were retrospectively assessed for age at presentation, history of exposure to TB, presenting symptoms, investigations, initial diagnosis, surgical treatment and outcome. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine potential risk factors for e

Surgical management of mediastinal lesions.

Mediastinal tumors and cysts are relatively uncommon lesions requiring histologic confirmation. This retrospective study reports the experience of our department in the diagnosis and treatment of mediastinal lesions. Mediastinal lesions that were surgically treated in 200 patients aged 6-84 years, during a period of 28 years, were included in this series. Sixty patients had an apparently non-resectable lesion or lymphadenopathy of the anterior superior mediastinum. They had an anterior mediastinotomy and biopsy of the mediastinal lesion. No perioperative deaths were recorded in those patients.

Tracheal bronchus and associated pathologies detected by multidetector-row computed tomography in the Vietnamese population.

Tracheal bronchus (TB) is a very rare condition, which is often associated with some other pathologies. This study was designed to characterize the morphology of tracheal bronchus and associated pathologies in Vietnamese individuals using multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT). From August 2016 to February 2021, 16, 64-, and 128-detector-row computed tomography scanners were used to perform chest scans of 3663 patients, of whom 32 had tracheal bronchus and associated pathologies. The prevalence of tracheal bronchus was 0.9%, of which 0.6% were male and 0.3% were female. We found that one

Segmental pigmentation disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is little published information about segmental hypo- and hyperpigmentation pigmentation disorder (SegPD) although it is a relatively common problem in paediatric dermatology. OBJECTIVES: To define the spectrum of disease, clinical presentation and associations in cases of SegPD and to clarify further the terminology in defining patterned hypo- and hyperpigmentation in children. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of cases in an academic paediatric dermatology practice. Thirty-nine patients referred for dermatological evaluation were diagnosed with SegPD. Demographic a

Thoracoscopy in children: is a chest tube necessary?

PURPOSE: Historically, a chest tube or drain has been left following a thoracic operation to allow drainage of air or fluid in the postoperative period. However, in patients undergoing thoracoscopy, the tube is often the greatest source of postoperative pain. We began excluding chest tubes several years ago and therefore are reviewing our experience to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this approach. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical record was performed on patients undergoing thoracoscopy at two centers from 1993 to 2007. Patients who left the operating room without a chest tu

[Value of carbon-11 choline positron emission tomography in patients with pulmonary abnormalities].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of carbon-11 choline (CH) positron emission tomography (PET) in patients with pulmonary nodules. METHODS: From September 2002 to December 2004, 39 patients with pulmonary nodules were imaged with CH-PET. CH-PET data was analyzed by visual method and semiquantitative method. When pulmonary nodules with abnormal CH uptake appeared in PET scans confirmed by visual method, their maximum and mean standard uptake value (SUVmax and SUVmean) were measured using semiquantitative method. Diagnoses were confirmed by surgery or biopsy and follow-up survey. RESULTS: Twenty-

Robotic-assisted simultaneous resection of a left-sided thymic neoplasm and a right-sided lower thoracic paravertebral neoplasm via the same ports and two docking steps: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The authors presented a 63-year old female synchronously complicated with a thymic tumor located at the left-side of the superior mediastinum, and a paravertebral tumor located at the right-side of the lower thorax. Conventional thoracoscopic surgical procedure using rigid instruments to simultaneously resect the two tumors via the same ports might be technically challenging. To our knowledge, the use of a surgical robot allowed the surgeon to perform precise dissection from extreme angles with the characteristic of articulating surgical instruments. CASE PRESENTATION: Two lesions

Antenatal diagnosis of congenital thoracic malformations: early surgery, late surgery, or no surgery?

Today, congenital thoracic malformations (CTMs), which comprise a spectrum of anomalies rather than separate entities, are frequently detected on routine antenatal ultrasound. However, with similar appearances of different congenital lung and nonpulmonary lesions, a definitive diagnosis cannot usually be established antenatally with absolute certainty. The natural history of CTMs is extremely variable. Large lesions may cause serious complications in the fetus, necessitating treatment in utero. Such prenatal therapy, however, is only required in a small minority of fetuses. Many lesions decrea

Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation presenting as in-flight systemic air embolisation.

Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformations (CCAMs) are rarely diagnosed in adulthood. The present case study reports a case of a CCAM presenting as a cerebral air embolus during an international flight. In the present case, supportive therapy resulted in a full recovery. The patient later underwent elective excision of the pulmonary malformation. Since the overall mortality of in-flight cerebral air embolisation is high, patients with such asymptomatic cysts should be considered for elective surgery.
