Amino Acid Substitutions in the Na+/K+-ATPase May Contribute to Salinity Tolerance in Insects.

Environmental salinity levels vary naturally across terrestrial ecosystems but can be heightened locally by coastal proximity and desertification as well as human activities such as road salt application and agriculture. Since salt is essential for many physiological processes in insects, rising environmental sodium concentrations may drive behavioral changes, where insects select environments and food sources with suitable sodium levels, or evolutionary changes in constitutive or plastic physiological mechanisms to process salt, potentially altering ecological dynamics and species interaction

Timing of ultra-portable ultrasound (UPUS) Examinations in detecting clinically concerning recurrent pneumothorax.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pneumothorax (rPTX) is a common complication following thoracostomy tube (TT) removal in chest trauma patients. While chest X-ray (CXR) is most commonly used to detect a rPTX, bedside ultraportable ultrasound (UPUS) is a feasible, low cost, and radiation free alternative. No consensus exists with regards to the optimal timing of diagnostic imaging to assess for rPTX post-TT removal. Accordingly, we sought to identify an ideal UPUS timing to detect a rPTX METHODS: We conducted a single center prospective study of adult (≥18years) patients admitted with a chest trauma. UPUS

Biomechanical Evaluation of Different Plate Configurations for Midshaft Clavicle Fracture Fixation: Single Plating Compared with Dual Mini-Fragment Plating.

BACKGROUND: Dual-plate constructs have become an increasingly common fixation technique for midshaft clavicle fractures and typically involve the use of mini-fragment plates. The goal of this technique is to reduce plate prominence and implant irritation. However, limited biomechanical data exist for these lower-profile constructs. The study aim was to compare dual mini-fragment orthogonal plating with small-fragment clavicle plates for biomechanical noninferiority and to determine if an optimal plate configuration could be identified using a cadaveric model. METHODS: Twenty-four cadaveric cl

Low-Abundant Microorganisms: The Human Microbiome's Dark Matter, a Scoping Review.

Research on the human microbiome has mainly been restricted to the identification of most abundant microbiota associated with health or disease. Their abundance may reflect their capacity to exploit their niche, however, metabolic functions exerted by low-abundant microrganisms can impact the dysbiotic signature of local microbial habitats. This scoping review aims to map the literature regarding the management of low-abundant microorganisms in studies investigating human microbiome samples. A systematic literature search was performed in 5 electronic databases, as well as grey literature. We

Development of a Vascularized Heterotopic Neonatal Rat Heart Transplantation Model.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Rodent adult-to-adult heterotopic heart transplantation is a well-established animal model, and the detailed surgical technique with several modifications has been previously described. In immature donor organ transplantation, however, the surgical technique needs to be revised given the smaller size and fragility of the donor graft. Here, we report our surgical technique for heterotopic abdominal (AHTx) and femoral (FHTx) neonatal rat heart transplantation based on an experience of over 300 cases. METHODS: Heterotopic heart transplantation was conducted in syngeneic Lewis

454 pyrosequencing based transcriptome analysis of Zygaena filipendulae with focus on genes involved in biosynthesis of cyanogenic glucosides.

BACKGROUND: An essential driving component in the co-evolution of plants and insects is the ability to produce and handle bioactive compounds. Plants produce bioactive natural products for defense, but some insects detoxify and/or sequester the compounds, opening up for new niches with fewer competitors. To study the molecular mechanism behind the co-adaption in plant-insect interactions, we have investigated the interactions between Lotus corniculatus and Zygaena filipendulae. They both contain cyanogenic glucosides which liberate toxic hydrogen cyanide upon breakdown. Moths belonging to the

Synthesis and characterization of high nuclearity iron(III) phosphonate molecular clusters.

Three new phosphonic acid ligands (4- (t)butylphenyl phosphonic acid, 3,5-dimethylphenyl phosphonic acid, and diphenylmethylphosphonic acid) have been synthesized and employed in search of high molecularity iron(III) clusters. The cluster compounds are characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The solvothermal reaction of FeCl 3.6H 2O with diphenylacetic acid and p- (t)butylphenyl phosphonic acid resulted in an unprecedented dodecanuclear cluster [Fe 12(mu 2-O) 4(mu 3-O) 4(O 2CCHPh 2) 14(4- (t)buPhPO 3H) 6]( 1) having a double butterfly like core structure. The history of lupus erythematosus. From Hippocrates to Osler.

Hippocrates (460-375 BC) was the first to describe cutaneous ulcers under the heading of herpes esthiomenos. From what we can tell, Herbernus of Tours was the first to apply the term lupus to a skin disease in 916 AD. Following this, a number of terms including lupus, noli me tangere, and herpes esthiomenos were used to describe cutaneous ulcers. Willan (1757-1812) expanded the classification of skin diseases using the term herpes for vesicular diseases and lupus for destructive and ulcerative diseases of the face. The first clear description of lupus erythematosus was by Biett and was reporte

Reliability of Transcutaneous Laryngeal Ultrasonography Performed as Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) of the Larynx: A Preliminary Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous laryngeal ultrasonography is an emerging non-invasive method for assessing vocal fold function and has shown promise as a screening tool for vocal fold palsy. Existing evidence, however, is almost exclusively based on high-end conventional ultrasonography. With the increasing adoption of point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) devices across diverse clinical settings, understanding their reliability in transcutaneous laryngeal ultrasonography (TLUSG) is essential. To date, no study has directly compared POCUS and conventional ultrasonography for vocal fold visualizatio

Phenotypic Divergence of JAG1- and NOTCH2-Associated Alagille Syndrome & Disease-Specific NOTCH2 Variant Classification Guidelines.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Alagille syndrome (ALGS) is a rare, autosomal dominant disorder with high phenotypic heterogeneity. Disease-causing variants are primarily identified in Jagged1 (JAG1), with fewer reported in NOTCH2. JAG1 variants cause disease through a mechanism of haploinsufficiency, but the mechanism for NOTCH2 variants is not completely understood, making classification of variants more challenging. Using a large, international patient cohort acquired through the Global ALagille Alliance (GALA) study, we sought to improve classification of NOTCH2 variants and study phenotypic difference
