Smokers' response to combination bupropion, nicotine patch, and counseling treatment by race/ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how to tailor nicotine dependence treatment to specific race/ethnic groups is limited. The present study investigated responses to established smoking cessation treatments among African American, Hispanic, and White adults. METHODS: Participants were 559 smokers (126 African American, 73 Hispanic, and 360 White). All received treatment for eight weeks with open-label bupropion, the nicotine patch, and individual counseling. The dependent variable was tobacco abstinence during the last four weeks of treatment. The independent variables were race/ethnicity and other know

C-reactive protein levels in patients with aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Sera from patients with periodontal infections contain elevated levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) compared to periodontally healthy individuals. Most studies to date have included patients with chronic periodontitis, and few investigators have studied CRP levels in subjects with aggressive periodontitis (AgP). The purpose of this study was to determine the relative levels of serum CRP in AgP patients and periodontally healthy subjects and to examine patients' characteristics that might account for intergroup differences. METHODS: Serum samples were collected from 93 patients with

Dual use of e-cigarettes and combustible cigarettes elevates salivary DKK1 levels similar to exclusive smoking.

BACKGROUND: Animal models and in vitro studies have demonstrated that the use of electronic cigarettes causes inflammation, oxidative stress, and cell death. This study aimed to quantify molecules associated with cell death in the saliva of dual electronic cigarette users and to compare these levels with those observed in users of combustible cigarettes. METHODOLOGY: We included three groups: (1) e-cigarette users who additionally smoke combustible cigarettes, "dual users" (DU users, n = 56), combustible cigarette smokers (CCS, n = 23), and non-smokers (NS, n = 40). We evaluated 10 molecules

Combined effects of heavy metals and volatile organic compounds on oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk.

BACKGROUND: Oxidative stress contributes to early cardiovascular disease (CVD) but is rarely assessed clinically. Oxidative balance score (OBS) summarizes pro-/antioxidant factors, yet its relevance to CVD is understudied. Additionally, pollutants such as heavy metals (HMs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) raise oxidative stress but are often studied individually, limiting real-world applicability. The study aims to determine associations of HM + VOC exposures with OBS, and OBS with CVD. METHODS: We analyzed NHANES 2011-2020 adults aged ≥20. Exposure to HMs + VOCs was determined via urin

Fine-mapping the CYP2A6 regional association with nicotine metabolism among African American smokers.

The nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR; 3'hydroxycotinine/cotinine) is a stable biomarker for CYP2A6 enzyme activity and nicotine clearance, with demonstrated clinical utility in personalizing smoking cessation treatment. Common genetic variation in the CYP2A6 region is strongly associated with NMR in smokers. Here, we investigated this regional association in more detail. We evaluated the association of CYP2A6 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and * alleles with NMR among African American smokers (N = 953) from two clinical trials of smoking cessation. Stepwise conditional analysis and Bayes

Differential Effects of Nicotine, Alcohol, and Coexposure on Neuroimmune-Related Protein and Gene Expression in Corticolimbic Brain Regions of Rats.

Nicotine and alcohol co-use is extremely common and their use constitutes two of the most common causes of preventable death, yet the underlying biological mechanisms are largely understudied. Activation of neuroimmune toll-like receptors (TLRs) promotes the induction of proinflammatory cascades and increases alcohol intake in rodents, which further promotes TLRs in the brain; nicotine may decrease central proinflammatory signaling. The current studies sought to determine the effects of nicotine ± alcohol (alone or in combination) on circulating blood plasma and TLR protein/gene expression in

Understanding common population markers for SARS-CoV-2 RNA normalization in wastewater - A review.

Wastewater monitoring and epidemiology have seen renewed interest during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, there is an increasing need to normalize wastewater-derived viral loads in local populations. Chemical tracers, both exogenous and endogenous compounds, have proven to be more stable and reliable for normalization than biological indicators. However, differing instrumentation and extraction methods can make it difficult to compare results. This review examines current extraction and quantification methods for ten common population indicators: creatinine, coprostanol, nicotine, co
